Rev. Mike Winters Pastor Ben Harding Music Director Dr. Ray Jones, Jr. Pastor Emeritus WISE BAPTIST NEWS A PUBLICATION FOR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS OF WISE BAPTIST CHURCH December 4, 2018 A place for faith and fellowship with family and friends. Dear Church Family and Friends, Incubation. The first time I heard that word was in the second grade. There was a box with chicken eggs and a heating light. A process needed to be completed before the eggs could be hatched. We watched every day for changes. Nourishment for the chicks was inside the shell and a lamp kept them warm. The chicks grew. Then, we heard a faint pecking sound. Cracks formed in the eggs. Then, a miracle a little chick hatched! Faith can hatch in our lives. A Night in Bethlehem was a good example. Ancient Bethlehem was re-created in our Fellowship Hall. There were the shops: the Bethlehem Bakery, the Scribe s Tent, the Carpentry Shop, the Painter s Hut, the Leathercrafter s Tent, the Pottery Shed and the Village Photographer. There was the stable with Joseph, Mary and the baby Jesus. There were angels singing, greeters greeting and shepherds wandering the streets. Each shop offering hands-on experiences. Shopkeepers, angels, shepherds, greeters, census-takers, etc. were all in costume. There was much preparation. People were invited to help. Plans were made. Tents were set up. Crafts were lined up. Costumes were made and fitted. Prayers were offered up. Incubation. Spiritual incubation took place in the preparation and carrying-out of A Night in Bethlehem. Each act was a way of stepping into the world into which Jesus was born. Jesus became more real. The wonder of Christmas gripped us. Incubation. How can we create conditions for spiritual incubation this Advent season? Read the Christmas story in Matthew 2:1-12 and Luke 2:1-21 several times, slowly. Sing a Christmas Carol each day. Think and reflect on each word and offer the song up as praise to God. Be in regular Bible study and worship. Reach out and invite others to church events. Perform random acts of kindness. Rejoice! Jesus is born! MUSIC * Youth * Children News O Little Town of Bethlehem On Christmas Eve in 1865, Phillips Brooks (1835-93), a gangling young American Episcopalian, rode the perilous journey from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, to assist at the midnight service in the Church of the Nativity. Two years later, back in Massachusetts, he was inspired by the experience to write this carol for his Sunday school. Rev Brooks - 6ft 6in tall and capable of preaching at more than 200 words a minute - was a favorite with children; when one woman told her daughter that he had died, the girl replied: "O how happy the angels will be." ~ Excerpt from The Story Behind the Carol: O Little Town of Bethlehem, The Telegraph The music to O Little Town of Bethlehem was added by his organist, Lewis Redner (1831-1908). Redner recounts the story of his composition: As Christmas of 1868 approached, Mr. Brooks told me that he had written a simple little carol for the Christmas Sunday-school service, and he asked me to write the tune to it. The simple music was written in great haste and under great pressure. We were to practice it on the following Sunday. Mr. Brooks came to me on Friday, and said, Redner, have you ground out that music yet to "O Little Town of Bethlehem"? I replied, 'No,' but that he should have it by Sunday. On the Saturday night previous my brain was all confused about the tune. I thought more about my Sunday-school lesson than I did about the music. But I was roused from sleep late in the night hearing an angel-strain whispering in my ear, and seizing a piece of music paper I jotted down the treble of the tune as we now have it, and on Sunday morning before going to church I filled in the harmony. Neither Mr. Brooks nor I ever thought the carol or the music to it would live beyond that Christmas of 1868. ~ Excerpt taken from Wikipedia WBC Youth Ministry Sunday, December 16, 2pm Trip to see Bristol Speedway in Lights!
