TITLE: ABOUT THE BIBLE Opening Prayer: Dear God, Thank you for the KIDS INFUSION course! Help me to learn more about you through this. I pray you infuse this information into my heart so that it has the full impact on my life!!! Scripture Key: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. Honor Point: The Bible is the Word of God to us! 1

WELCOME TO KIDS INFUSION Kid s Infusion is about leading you into a relationship with God and teaching you about Him and His church from a very young age! We are so excited each week we will add a piece of the puzzle to give you the whole picture by the end of all the sessions! The Kid s Infusion course is made up of four parts; they are Become, Believe, Belong & Befriend. Our First section is BECOME. Over the next five weeks you will learn how to BECOME who God has called you to be! It does not start when you are older, it starts RIGHT NOW! Christianity is not just something you BELIEVE, it is something you BECOME! It is not that you act Christian but that you will be one. It is not about being saved it is about LIVING saved! What you believe in your heart is what you are going to live out. The Holy Bible Sing this tune: The B-I-B-L-E, yes that s the book for me! I stand up-on, the WORD OF GOD, the B-I-B-L-E!!! (Perhaps the kids will join in singing.) We all probably know, or have heard, that song, but do we really know what it means? What is the Bible, anyway? What makes this book so special? How has it been around for so many years? How do we know we can believe it? We are going to talk about all of those things and learn about how the Bible is the written Word of God. The Bible is the most important book that has ever been 2

WORD UP! written. It was written long ago as the Holy Spirit told men what to write. It was not written all at one time, either. It was written over a period of 1500 years, by many different people. It is special because it is God s word to people that BELIEVE in Him. There is not another book like it on the entire earth! The Bible tells us the will of God. The Bible teaches us about real, everlasting life. Jesus called the Word of God our daily bread. He said it was more important to us that the food we eat, it is our spiritual food! The very first sentence, in the WHOLE entire Bible is talking about God. He is spoken of ALL through the scripture. The Bible is about God and The Bible is the most important book that has ever been written. THE BOOKS OF THE BIBLE What is in the Bible? First we are going to talk about the books of the Bible. The word Bible comes from a Greek word biblia, which in English means: books. The Bible is one book, which is made of many books put together. In the Bible there are 66 total books! There are two main sections of the Bible. Ask: Does anyone know what the two main sections of the Bible are called? (give a chance for the kids to answer, then say) Old Testament and New Testament!! The Old Testament begins in Genesis and ends with Malachi; it has 39 total books. It is mostly about God dealing with his Chosen People, the Hebrews or Jews. 3

The New Testament begins with the Gospel of Matthew and ends with the book of Revelation; it has 27 books! The New Testament is mostly about Jesus, how we live as Christians and the letters to the first churches. If 66 books seem like a lot to imagine, we can break those books down into sections. They can all be piled up into six different categories! Imagine the Bible as a small library with groups of books placed on different shelves: Law History Wisdom & Poetry Prophesy Gospels Letters On Each shelf there is a set of books that make up each category: The Law- the First Five books of the Bible Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, & Deuteronomy This section is where we find the Ten Commandments! Can anyone guess in which books of the Law they are found? (Exodus) The History books Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1&2 Samuel,1& 2 Kings, 1&2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah,& Esther Plus Acts in the NT reads like a History book The Wisdom and Poetry books Job, Psalm, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon These books were written poetically. Interesting Fact: The Psalms are songs! 4

The Prophets A prophet is someone who speaks for God, sometimes in the form of visions and sometimes saying hard truths about our times. A Prophet is a person who says to others exactly what God tells him to say to them. Some have also worked great miracles through their faith in God. God used the prophets to provide direction and wisdom during times of trouble and to remind the people of God s promise for them. The prophets also tell us a lot about the coming of Jesus. Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel Minor Prophets: Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi Also, Revelation in the New Testament is Prophetic. The Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Word Gospel means good news. The first four New Testament books- Matthew, Mark, Luke & John- tell the good news about Jesus Christ and His ministry. It reveals the teachings, life, death and Resurrection of Jesus. Men who were there and actually saw the promise come true wrote these books. They are they eye witnesses of what happened. It is good news to us because it is the news that Jesus has given us a way to be rescued from our own sin. Letters: Epistles Written by Paul: Romans, 1&2 Corinthians, Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1&2 Thessalonians, 1&2 Timothy, Titus, Philemon Epistles Written by people other than Paul: Hebrews, James, 1& 2 Peter, 1,2, &3 John, Jude 5

The apostle Paul wrote thirteen letters (also called Epistles) in the New Testament. Some were written to churches and others to one person. The books Hebrews through Jude were written by people other than Paul. These letters were written to the very first churches. They were very important back then because they told the leaders of the churches what to do. These letters are still very important and they set basic standards for churches even today! Jesus commanded the very first believers to spread the news about himself to everyone on the whole earth! They began to share the Gospel around the world. Some people did not want the Christians to worship so they tried to stop the people from gathering to worship. Sometimes they even killed them. The Epistles are the letters that the apostles wrote to these people to encourage them and teach them how to walk with the power the Holy Spirit gave them. They teach us about the Love of God and the Gifts that God gives to help people in His church know Him and love each other. Their writings are now over 2,000 years old and there are millions of Christians & churches around the world. These letters are still helping churches even after so many years have passed. That is one more reason why the Bible is the most important book that has ever been written. God s word, the Bible, is living and active. It is relevant to us even today! The New Testament The New Testament tells us how God's kept His promises that he made in The Old Testament through Jesus! It is here we learn how Jesus fulfilled the law of the Old Covenant and through faith in Him we can receive forgiveness of sins and live life under the New Covenant. READING THE BIBLE 6

When? Why? Ask: What is the most important thing we can do with the Bible? Allow for a few answers, then say: READ IT!!! Why, When and How to read the Bible. Why do we read the Bible? We read the Bible because sets a clear path for us. It clears out all the things that get in the way of righteousness and living a Godly life. It is as sharp as a sword, dividing our Soul from our Spirit. (Hebrews 4:12) We Read the Bible because the Bible is what tells us about God. If we are going to serve, know and Love God, we have to get to know him. We also read the Bible to find truth. You cannot just depend on what people say, we read the Bible because it is the source of all Truth. Lastly, we read the Bible because God told us to! We should also read the Bible because The Bible is the most important book that has ever been written. Joshua 1:8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. When do we read the Bible? Read the word every day! We read the Bible any time we need it. Sometimes we read the Bible when we are discouraged or sad. We read the Bible when we are making decisions about life. We read the Bible when we are hurt. We read the Bible when we have questions. 7

How? The Bible is full of answers to all of our questions. Someone at school was mean to me. What do I do? Love your neighbor; Treat others how you want to be treated. I did something wrong and I feel really bad about it. You can read about forgiveness. HOW do we read the Bible? As you read the Bible, always invite the Holy Spirit to help you understand what you are reading. Ask Him to be your teacher to help you see and hear His truths. As you read the Word of God you will begin to hear the Holy Spirit speak to you. You will experience certain verses stand out more than others. You learn to hear the Holy Spirit speaking by reading the Bible! Some people describe this as a verse, jumping off the page at them. This means when they read it, it really meant something to their lives. This is a wonderful experience and you can do this now, at your age! The Bible says things that will speak to you now! When we are reading the Bible, it is important to know how to look up a scripture in the Bible. If the Preacher says to turn to a book in the Bible, he usually says the book name, the chapter and then the verse. This is how we find the exact verse! You write the scripture the same way. A scripture reference is written with the Book name, then chapter, then you put a colon and then a verse: Matthew 5:44 (Book name chapter, then verse). 8

(TEACHER NOTE: at this time you will want to write this on the whiteboard for the students to see what you are talking about.) ~ONE MORE THING~ What does the RED INK mean? When you are reading in the New Testament, your Bible may have some words in RED ink. Ask: Does anyone know what this means? It simply means that JESUS spoke those words when he was on this earth. How do we know the bible is real? (Using the R.E.A.L. model) Relational: The Bible speaks to us. This is evidence that it is real. Although it was written a long long time ago, the truths written in it still apply to our lives. This is proof that God, the creator of heaven and earth inspired it. Otherwise it would no longer be relevant, but it is still as important today as it ever was. The Bible is the most important book that has ever been written. Experiential Proof the Bible is real: Experiential: We are able to divide the two seen parts, body and brain. God is able to divide the two unseen aspects. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. The spirit and soul are bound together, but once saved the word of God divides them up! This is how we can tell which one is which! The spirit used to be slave to the soul, but now through the power of Christ and the Word of God the spirit can conquer the soul! 9

Applicable: Another reason we know the Bible is real is because of Jesus. Since the Gospels (review with the students this is Matt, Mark, Luke, and John) were written by four different people, and all their stories line up, this shows us Jesus was a real person. This is evidence that the Bible is true since Jesus is true and the words he spoke are the truth. Learner-Based: Physical Evidence: There are many old old copies of the Bible that prove the Bible was written long ago and that it was translated correctly. Archaeological finds proves that the Bible matches up with things scientists have found that are very old. Online Resource: Now Let s discover a fun song that can help us learn the books of the Bible! Click on the link below for the song 66 books in the Bible. You can type it into your browser. (Must be connected to the internet to watch or download and burn to a cd before class) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jrxxmxno3nc&feature=related Option for Older Kids only, (Ages 8 and up) Play a game with the kids where you call out a scripture and they have to see who can find it first. (If ages vary split into appropriate age groups so the game is fair.) Game: Bible Books Sword Drill (Play as time allows) This is an exercise to help the student learn where the books of the Bible are. Included is a reference from each of the sixty-six books. Divide into two teams. A point is awarded to the first team on which every member has found the verse. Old Testament Genesis 1:1 Exodus 12:13 Leviticus 25:10 Numbers 9:17 Deuteronomy 29:29 Joshua 1:8 Judges 16:20 Ruth 1:16 1 Samuel 15:22 10 2 Samuel 18:33 1 Kings 3:9 2 Kings 6:17 1 Chronicles 4:10 2 Chronicles 16:9 Ezra 7:10 Nehemiah 4:17 Esther 4:14 Job 42:10 Psalm 84:11 Proverbs 3:15 Ecclesiastes 12:13
