Weekly Bible Study Resources Translations of some Bible verses for your weekly Bible study Compiled by Karenlee Mannerino, CS For week of April 15-21, 2013 Doctrine of Atonement Golden Text I John 4:10 NLT This is real love not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins. CEB - This is love: it is not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son as the sacrifice that deals with our sins. MSG - This is the kind of love we are talking about not that we once upon a time loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as a sacrifice to clear away our sins and the damage they ve done to our relationship with God. PHIL - We see real love, not in the fact that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to make personal atonement for our sins. Responsive Reading I John 2:1-3 NLT My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. 2 He himself is the sacrifice that atones for our sins and not only our sins but the sins of all the world. 3 And we can be sure that we know him if we obey his commandments. PHIL - I write these things to you, my children, to help you to avoid sin. But if a man should sin, remember that our advocate before the Father is Jesus Christ and he is just, 2 the one who made personal atonement for our sins (and for those of the rest of the world as well). 3 It is only when we obey God s laws that we can be quite sure that we really know him. I John 4:8 God is, 9, 14 17, 19 NLT - God is love. 9 God showed how much he loved us by sending his one and only Son into the world so that we might have eternal life through him. 14 Furthermore, we have seen with our own eyes and now testify that the Father sent his Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 All who confess that Jesus is the Son of God have God living in them, and they live in God. 16 We know how much God loves us, and we have put our trust in his love. God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. 17 And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect. So we will not be afraid on the day of judgment, but we can face him with confidence because we live like Jesus here in this world. 19 We love each other [ b] because he loved us first. AB 14 - And [besides] we ourselves have seen (have deliberately and steadfastly contemplated) and bear witness that the Father has sent the Son [as the] Savior of the world. PHIL 16 God is love, and the man whose life is lived in love does, in fact, live in God, and God does, in fact, live in him. AB 16 God is love, and he who dwells and continues in love dwells and continues in God, and God dwells and continues in him. NIRV - 16 So we know that God loves us. We depend on it. God is love. Anyone who leads a life of love shows that he is joined to God. And God is joined to him. PHIL 17 So our love for him grows more and more, filling us with complete confidence for the day when he shall judge all men---for we realise that our life in this world is actually his life lived in us. Section 1 I Sam 15:22 NLT "What is more pleasing to the LORD: your burnt offerings and sacrifices or your obedience to his voice? Obedience is far better than sacrifice. Listening to him is much better than offering the fat of rams. Isa 43:3 (to :), 4 (to :) NLT - For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. 4 you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. I Cor 8:6 PHIL ---there is only one God, the Father, from whom everything comes, and for whom we live. NLT there is only one God, the Father, who created everything, and we exist for him. And there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom God made everything and through whom we have been given life. AB - ---there is [only] one God, the Father, Who is the Source of all things and for Whom we [have life], John 10:23 25 (to :), 27 30 NLT - He was in the Temple, walking through the section known as Solomon s Colonnade. 24 The people surrounded him and asked, How long are you going to keep us in suspense? If you are the Messiah, tell us plainly. 25 Jesus replied, I have already told you, and you don t believe me. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one can snatch them away from me, 29 for my Father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. [ d ] No one can snatch them from the Father s hand. 30 The Father and I are one. II John 1:9 NLT - anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son. NIV -.whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. PHIL -.The man who bases his life on Christ s teaching, however, has both the Father and the Son. Section 2 Mark 12:32, 33 NLT - there is only one God and no other. 33 And I know it is important to love him with all my heart and all my understanding and all my strength, and to love my neighbor as myself. This is more important than to offer all of the burnt offerings and sacrifices required in the law. 2

Matt 5:17 NLT - Don t misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose. PHIL You must not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to complete them. Matt 5:22-24 PHIL - I say to you that anyone who is angry with his brother must stand his trial: 23, 24 So that if, while you are offering your gift at the alter, you should remember that your brother has something against you, you must leave your gift there before the altar and go away. Make your peace with your brother first, then come and offer your gift. Matt 7:28, 29 PHIL - When Jesus had finished theses words the crowd were astonished at the power behind his teaching. For his words had the ring of authority, quite unlike those of their scribes. II Cor 5:20 PHIL For Christ s sake we beg you, Make your peace with God. Section 3 John 8:1-11 NLT - Jesus returned to the Mount of Olives, 2 but early the next morning he was back again at the Temple. A crowd soon gathered, and he sat down and taught them. 3 As he was speaking, the teachers of religious law and the Pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in the act of adultery. They put her in front of the crowd. 4 Teacher, they said to Jesus, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. 5 The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say? 6 They were trying to trap him into saying something they could use against him, but Jesus stooped down and wrote in the dust with his finger. 7 They kept demanding an answer, so he stood up again and said, All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone! 8 Then he stooped down again and wrote in the dust. 9 When the accusers heard this, they slipped away one by one, beginning with the oldest, until only Jesus was left in the middle of the crowd with the woman. 10 Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, Where are your accusers? Didn t even one of them condemn you? 11 No, Lord, she said. And Jesus said, Neither do I. Go and sin no more. Section 4 Heb 13:9 PHIL - Do not be carried away by various peculiar teachings. It is good to depend on the grace of God for inward strength, AB - Do not be carried about by different and varied and alien teachings; for it is good for the heart to be established and ennobled and strengthened by means of grace (God s favor and spiritual blessing) Matt 9:2 8, 37 The, 38 NLT Some people brought to him a paralyzed man on a mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, Be encouraged, my child! Your sins are forgiven. 3 But some of the teachers of religious law said to themselves, That s blasphemy! Does he think he s God? 4 Jesus knew [ a] what they were thinking, so he asked them, Why do you have such evil thoughts in your hearts? 5 Is it easier to say Your sins are forgiven, or Stand up and walk? 6 So I will prove to you that the Son of Man [ b] has the authority on earth to forgive sins. Then Jesus turned to the paralyzed man 3

and said, Stand up, pick up your mat, and go home! 7 And the man jumped up and went home! 8 Fear swept through the crowd as they saw this happen. And they praised God for sending a man with such great authority. The harvest is great, but the workers are few. 38 So pray to the Lord who is in charge of the harvest; ask him to send more workers into his fields. Section 5 John 17:1, 6, 11 Holy, 26 NLT - I have After saying all these things, Jesus looked up to heaven and said, Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so he can give glory back to you. 6 I have revealed you [ a] to the ones you gave me from this world. They were always yours. You gave them to me, and they have kept your word 11 Holy Father, you have given me your name; [ b ] now protect them by the power of your name so that they will be united just as we are. 26 I have revealed you to them, and I will continue to do so. Then your love for me will be in them, and I will be in them. NIV 1,6,11,26 After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you. 6 I have revealed you to those whom you gave me out of the world. They were yours; you gave them to me and they have obeyed your word. 11 Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them. Acts 2:22 28 NLT - People of Israel, listen! God publicly endorsed Jesus the Nazarene [ ] by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him, as you well know. 23 But God knew what would happen, and his prearranged plan was carried out when Jesus was betrayed. With the help of lawless Gentiles, you nailed him to a cross and killed him. 24 But God released him from the horrors of death and raised him back to life, for death could not keep him in its grip. 25 King David said this about him: I see that the Lord is always with me.i will not be shaken, for he is right beside me.26 No wonder my heart is glad, and my tongue shouts his praises!my body rests in hope.27 For you will not leave my soul among the dead]or allow your Holy One to rot in the grave.28 You have shown me the way of life, and you will fill me with the joy of your presence. ] Rom 5:11 we PHIL - we may hold our heads high in the light of God s love because of the reconciliation which Christ has made. Section 6 Eph 2:4-6,10 PHIL ---God, who is rich in mercy, because of the great love he had for us, gave us life together with Christ---it is, remember, by grace that you are saved---and lifted us to take our place with him in Christ Jesus in the Heavens. 10 For God has made us what we are, created in Christ Jesus to do those good deeds which he planned for us to do. NLT - 10 For we are God s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. Eph 4:7,13 PHIL - To each one of us is given his measure of grace from the richness of Christ s gift. 13 that the whole body might be built up until the time comes when, in the unity of common faith and 4

common knowledge of the Son of God, we arrive at real maturity---that measure of development which is meant by the fulness of Christ. NLT 13 This will continue until we all come to such unity in our faith and knowledge of God s Son that we will be mature in the Lord, measuring up to the full and complete standard of Christ. NIV - 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowl edge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 5
