ST. BEDE CHURCH 36455 N. Wilson Road, Ingleside, IL 60041 May 18, 2014 Fifth Sunday of Easter Church website: www.stbedechurch.com Congratulations to our Pastor Fr. Rodolfo G. Ramirez on the Anniversary of his Ordination May 18, 2002 - May 18, 2014

2 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 18, 2014 A Message from Deacon Gregg Zeifert My Friends: When Jesus was performing his earthly ministry he spent much time with the sick. He spoke to them, He touched them, was an instrument of healing for them. In his ministry of healing, Jesus used signs signs such as mud and washing, the laying on of hands, even spittle. Through His Body, the Church, Jesus continues to minister to the sick, visiting them, touching them and using signs, both those in the sacraments and those in our sacramentals. The Church has been given the charge to continue Christ s ministry of compassion to the sick and dying. Christ desired to be present to the sick, the suffering, and the dying through His Church. She [the Church] believes in the life-giving presence of Christ, the physician of souls and bodies. This presence is particularly active through the sacraments, and in an altogether special way through the Eucharist, the bread that gives eternal life and that St. Paul suggests is connected with bodily health. (Catechism of the Catholic Church #1509) A Minister of Care has a huge role in sharing the Church s ministry to the sick after the manner of Jesus. In bringing the Eucharist to the sick and the homebound, the Minister represents Christ manifesting faith and charity on behalf of the whole community toward those who cannot be present at Sunday Mass. This ministry, and its ministers, is a sign of support and concern shown by the community for its members. Bill and Mary Lou Obenauf were among some of the first parishioners to be mandated into the Ministers of Care here at St. Bede. They have been members of St. Bede Parish for over 48 years, and active Ministers of Care for over 20 years. They received their training from Fr. Richard Zborowski. They were involved in home visits to individual homes and are currently involved in facilitating the Communion Prayer Service, on a rotating basis, at Lakeland apartments in Fox Lake. We currently have eight very talented and compassionate active ministers who, very willingly, give their time and affection to those in need. They minister to 30 parishioners. In addition to Bill & Mary Lou, we have Ann & Frank Wach, John Bieschke, Ed Portalski, Jacqui Hebein, and Sandra Prez. I would like to personally thank every one of them for their dedication and their sharing. There is a constant need for Ministers of Care, whether it is to those who are temporarily homebound or those in need for the long term just visiting one person makes a difference. I invite anyone who might have an interest in this ministry to see one of the ministers in the back of the church to answer any questions you may have. OUR GOD IS GOOD; ALL THE TIME Deacon Gregg

St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 7 OUR BEAUTIFUL CHURCH St. Bede is the patron saint of our parish. Our statue of St. Bede was donated in memory of Richard E. Soffietti by all of his Friends. St. Bede was declared a Doctor of the Church and a Saint in 1899 by Pope Leo XIII. Originally his feast day was May 27 th. Because of his popularity, it was later changed to May 25 th, the date on which he had died. The Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass will be held on Sunday, September 14, 2014, at 2:45 PM, at Holy Name Cathedral, 735 North State Street, Chicago, Illinois. Couples married in 1964 interested in attending this celebration should contact their parish to register. For further information, call the Family Ministries Office at 312-534-8351 or visit the website: www.familyministries.org. St. Bede Women s Club The May meeting of the St. Bede Women s Club started with Mass where all the women s voices joined to sing praise and thanksgiving to Our Blessed Mother. After Mass, we enjoyed a Cinco de Mayo dinner provided by the members of the Women s Club Board. For dessert we indulged in a Mother s Day cake. We prayed a litany to Mary and had a brief business meeting during which we came up with ideas for next year s entertainment. The next meeting will be June 2nd at 6:00 PM. We will meet in the church for Mass. All ladies of the parish are invited! A Big Thank You! God s blessings to all who participated in any way toward the success of our Mother s Day Rose Benefit. To win the battle for Life, you can make a difference. Over 20 churches throughout Lake County participated. Gratefully, Lake County Right to Life Committee.

8 Fifth Sunday of Easter May 18, 2014 Special Mass and Party of Thanksgiving We are very fortunate here at St. Bede to have as many people as we do giving up their personal time to minister to others in and outside the parish. We too often take these ministries for granted and fail to affirm their love and compassion. We have over 40 ministries each served by generous parishioners that have in one way or another reached out with a helping heart and hand and have asked for nothing in return. We would like to celebrate their gifts on May 31st, 2014 at the 5:00 PM Mass. At the Mass we will acknowledge and celebrate their gifts with a special liturgy and blessing and afterwards have a thanksgiving party downstairs in Coleman Hall. We invite all who have in one way or another volunteered their time and talent in ministry to come celebrate with us and allow us to thank you for your loving gift of service. Please plan on attending this special day of thanksgiving by letting us know if you can make it so we can plan on having enough food to share. Email me at lspohr@stbedechurch.com or call us at the rectory at 847-587-2251 and give us your name, phone number/email address and the ministry of which you are a part of. I pray that you will all be able to attend this special day of thanksgiving. God Bless, Father Rodolfo & Deacon Larry

Help St. Bede to receive an added $10,500! If the Sunday collections of May 4, 11, 18 and 25 and June 1, 8, 15 and 22 average $10,500.00, I will give $10,500 to St. Bede. Our second Sunday total was $9,590.29 Well below $10,500. We are now lagging behind the average that is needed for the match by $835.71! Please prayerfully consider increasing your weekly or monthly contribution! And continue to watch this space in the bulletin to see our progression toward attaining this incentive. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the production of the Parish Directory was delayed. It should not be too much longer before the Directory will be available. We will keep you posted and let you know when it arrives. Thank you for your patience! Celiac Disease & The Eucharist The Vatican has made a special provision for those suffering from celiac disease. The Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has established Norms for the Use of Low-Gluten Altar Breads with the proviso that the breads must contain at least trace amounts of gluten (so as to conform to the requirements of Canon Law) and may not contain any nonwheat products. The Norms also make a distinction between gluten-free and low-gluten breads. According to the Norms established by the Vatican, hosts (that are) quibus glutinum ablatum est (gluten-free) are invalid matter (and may not be used) for the celebration of the Eucharist. Low-gluten hosts are valid matter, provided they contain the amount of gluten sufficient to obtain the confection of bread, that there is no addition of foreign materials and that the procedure for making such hosts is not such as to alter the nature of the substance of the bread. Effective immediately, St. Bede will make available hosts that have approximately 0.01% [or 1 part per 10,000 pts] gluten content and have the Ecclesiastical Approval of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops. For those who are only able to consume a low-gluten host, please go to the sacristy at least 10 minutes before Mass and let the priest or deacon know so they can have one available for you for Communion at Mass.
