PRAYER OF THE DAY The presiding minister leads the prayer of the day. Let us pray. A brief silence is kept before the prayer. Almighty and ever-living God, throughout time you free the oppressed, heal the sick, and make whole all that you have made. Look with compassion on the world wounded by sin, and by your power restore us to wholeness of life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. The assembly is seated. FIRST READING: Jeremiah 22:13-16 A reading from Jeremiah. Word 13 Woe to him who builds his house by unrighteousness, and his upper rooms by injustice; who makes his neighbors work for nothing, and does not give them their wages; 14 who says, I will build myself a spacious house with large upper rooms, and who cuts out windows for it, paneling it with cedar, and painting it with vermilion. 15 Are you a king because you compete in cedar? Did not your father eat and drink and do justice and righteousness? Then it was well with him. [6]

GOSPEL: Mark 2:1-12 The gospel is announced. The holy gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. When [Jesus] returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at home. 2 So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. 3 Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. 4 And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. 5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, Son, your sins are forgiven. 6 Now some of the scribes were sitting there, questioning in their hearts, 7 Why does this fellow speak in this way? It is blasphemy! Who can forgive sins but God alone? 8 At once Jesus perceived in his spirit that they were discussing these questions among themselves; and he said to them, Why do you raise such questions in your hearts? 9 Which is easier, to say to the paralytic, Your sins are forgiven, or to say, Stand up and take your mat and walk 10 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins he said to the paralytic 11 I say to you, stand up, take your mat and go to your home. 12 And he stood up, and immediately took the mat and went out before all of them; so that they were all amazed and glorified God, saying, We have never seen anything like this! HYMN OF THE DAY He Comes to Us as One Unknown ELW 737 NICENE CREED The presiding minister introduces the creed. With the whole people of God, let us confess our faith. We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. [10]
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION An assisting minister invites the assembly into prayer. With the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, let us pray for the church, the world, and all of God s creation. For the church throughout the world, that, filled with your love, it may hunger for truth, thirst after righteousness, and bear witness to the good news: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For all members of the church, that they may serve you in true and godly lives: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For all pastors, deaconesses, diaconal ministers, and associates in ministry; for Elizabeth and James, our bishops; that, together with all those responsible for the care and nurture of your people, they may support one another in serving Christ: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For the nations of the world and their leaders, that they may work for justice and promote the dignity and freedom of every person: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For the whole creation, that everything you have made may fulfill your purpose and that we may exercise care for your diverse gifts: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For our neighborhoods, that we may know them and work to extend your mercy to our neighbors through ministries of love and care: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For the poor, the persecuted, the sick, the lonely, the forgotten, and all who suffer; for refugees, prisoners, and all who are in danger; that they may be relieved and protected: God of mercy, hear our prayer. For the glorious company of all the saints, those who have died in faith and those who live in certain hope, we praise you. That their witness may give us courage until the day of Jesus Christ: God of mercy, hear our prayer. The presiding minister concludes the prayers with these or similar words. Into your hands, gracious God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy; through Jesus Christ, our Savior. Amen. PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. The people may greet one another with a sign of Christ s peace and may say, Peace be with you or similar words. All return to their places. The presiding minister continues: You are indeed holy, almighty and merciful God. You are most holy, and great is the majesty of your glory. You so loved the world that you gave your only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life. We give you thanks for his coming into the world to fulfill for us your holy will and to accomplish all things for our salvation. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup, we proclaim the Lord s death until he comes. [14]
Remembering, therefore, his salutary command, his life-giving passion and death, his glorious resurrection and ascension, and the promise of his coming again, we give thanks to you, O Lord God Almighty, not as we ought but as we are able; we ask you mercifully to accept our praise and thanksgiving and with your Word and Holy Spirit to bless us, your servants, and these your own gifts of bread and wine, so that we and all who share in the body and blood of Christ may be filled with heavenly blessing and grace, and, receiving the forgiveness of sin, may be formed to live as your holy people and be given our inheritance with all your saints. To you, O God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, be all honor and glory in your holy church, now and forever. Gathered into one by the Holy Spirit, let us pray as Jesus taught us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. INVITATION TO COMMUNION The presiding minister may address the assembly in these or similar words. Almighty God, we give you thanks that you have fed us with this heavenly food. In your grace and by your Spirit, help us to be the body of Christ in the world.
