Pope Francis the good Jesuit that he is enthusiastically promotes this devotion of Jesus merciful Heart as we celebrate this Holy year of Mercy. June is the month where the Church universal holds up this beautiful devotion to the Merciful heart of our Lord. This year the actual feast day lands on June 3rd, the same day as the ordination of Deacon Dan Gehler to the priesthood and Carlos Gomez to the transitional diaconate. This feast day has been very dear to the faithful because it expresses the Good News of the Love of God. It expresses the mercy and forgiveness of the Lord that we all long for. As we meditate on the Sacred Heart we rejoice in our Lord s never-ending love for us and how his mercy never runs out. It is by experiencing this love deep in the heart of our Lord that calls us to love others. It calls us to be instruments of our Lord s mercy. 1
We are called in our spiritual life to make our hearts like Jesus Heart, so that we can love more and forgive more. We don t want our hearts to be closed and shriveled up. We want our hearts to be pumping with the love of God running through our veins. We want hearts of forgiveness and compassion. Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus can help us do some spiritual open heart surgery, so that our hearts can be pumping strong with the love and forgiveness of Christ. I want to encourage you to do some spiritual open heart surgery on yourself this month and ask Jesus the Sacred Heart to make His Heart like yours. One of my favorite prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus was written by St. Francis de Sales, maybe you can include it in your prayers this June. May Your Heart dwell always in our hearts! May Your Blood ever flow in the veins of our souls! Sun of our hearts, You give Life by the rays of Your goodness! I will not go until Your Heart has strengthened me, Lord Jesus! May the Heart of Jesus be the King of my heart! Blessed be God. Amen. 2
