September 10-16, 2011 MAMBALAM TIMES Page 5 TAMIL CINEMA 75 - A LOOK BACK By RANDOR GUY THE AVM STORY - 81 Chori Chori was inspired the famous Hollywood blockbuster and Oscar-winning classic made by the American movie maestro and celluloid poet Frank Capra - It Happened One Night (1934) - starring the legendary Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert in the lead. It created movie history and elevated the production company Columbia to the top from Poverty Row, Hollywood! The story of rich girl leaving home to escape an unwanted marriage or similar reason has been made as film several times in many languages of the world. Even in Hollywood, the master of cinema William Wyler made it as Roman Holiday (1957) which skyrocketed the unknown actress Audrey Hepburn to overnight stardom and Oscar Award winner. In India too it had been made in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi too with success. The entertaining comedy had, besides Raj Kapoor and Nargis, the talented funsters Master Bhagwan, Gope, Johnny Walker and Mukri, character actor David and the stock villain of Hindi Cinema, Pran. It also had South Indian artistes Raja Sulochana and dancers Kumari Kamala and Sayee-Subbulakshmi. The film had excellent music composed by the famous Hindi film music duo Shankar-Jaikishen. The director was Anand Thakur. The interesting and main feature of Hindi films by Madrasbased producers like Vasan and Meiyappan was that almost all of them were remakes of regional language films. Original screenplays were few and far between. As most films were melodramatic, emotion-drenched sentimental dramas built around the Hindu joint family and its problems, North Indian film critics called them Madras Formula cinema! But moviegoers loved them and for some years such films performed well at the box- office. The next AVM Studio Hindi film was Miss Mary (1957), again a remake of a successful Nagi Reddi-Chakrapani bilingual hit Missamma (1955, Telugu, Missiamma in Tamil). The genesis of this film is interesting. The Tamil and Telugu versions were directed by the renowned filmmaker and one of the leading personalities of Indian film history, L. V. Prasad. A titan of Indian cinema and celluloid colossus, Akkineni Lakshmi Vara Prasada Rao, better known as L. V. Prasad, made many movie classics, box-office bonanzas and memorable movies in Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi. Besides making films, he also built studios and film laboratories in many places around the country such as Madras, Bombay, Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Bhubaneswar. Indeed he built a movie moguldom by sheer toil, sweat and blood. And talent and skills. His life is a Horatio Algerish tale of rags to riches, fascinating, interesting and inspiring - a tale of success against hurdles and heartaches, groans and moans, and anxiety and agony. Prasad was born in 1908 into a family of landed gentry but the Great Depression of the 1930s took toll of the family fortunes, leaving it in penury. Prasad was already married and he abandoned ship and took off to Bombay in search of a living. Possessing hardly anything except the typical Andhra s flair for theatre and acting, he wandered all over Bombay looking for work, any kind of work to keep body and soul together. Often he starved and a kindly tailor permitted him to live in his shop in return for sweeping the premises and keeping it clean. Prasad worked doing odd jobs, like studio watchman, theatre watchman, and playing the harmonium for a street corner magician for the grand salary of one rupee a day. What a humble beginning for the spectacular career he built for himself in later years! During this period of struggle in Bombay, he worked as the gate-man for a cinema house where, years later, his Hindi film Ek Dhujhe Ke Liye was screened and established box-office records. He was accorded a reception at the same movie house where long ago he had stood at the gate. H. M. Reddi, a pioneer of Indian Cinema, gave him the break to play roles on and off the screen. In Madras, Reddi made two Telugu films Tenali Ramakrishna and Gharana Donga in which Prasad played important roles on screen and also worked in the directorial departments behind the screen. However he found the going unsteady in Madras and went back to Bombay where he was associated with the great Indian stage and screen person Prithvi Raj Kapoor in his theatrical activities. Once more Madras beckoned its finger at him and, during the mid-1940 s he came back to Madras and this time for keeps. (To be continued) 1000 join procession on eye donation About 1000 persons participated in a procession to create awareness about eye donation organized by Dr. Lankesh Eye Hospital (Ashok Nagar) and Lions Club of New Royal Ashok Nagar on Sept. 8. Participants walked along roads in Postal Colony and Mahadevan Street (West Mambalam), and along 11 th Avenue, 7 th Avenue and 6 th Avenue in Ashok Nagar. The procession started from 11 th Avenue and terminated in the hospital. Sasi Balakrishnan (President, Lions Club of New Royal Ashok Nagar) said that G. Senthamizhan (Information Minister) flagged off the rally. Dr. S. Lankeshwaran (Managing Director, Dr. Lankesh Eye Hospital), Dr. T. Senthil and Discourses on Saisath Saritha Under the auspices of Sri Shirdi Sai Meditation Mandir (6, Sarojini Street, T. Nagar) there are discourses on Sri Saisath Saritha at 6.30 p.m on Sundays in its premises. T. Thiruvalluvan (Founder) told Mambalam Times that mass spiritual healing is conducted at 7.30 p.m on Thursdays and Sundays. OBITUARY S. DHARMICHAND ROONWAL S. Dharmichand Roonwal (resident of 24, Gopal Street, T. Nagar) passed away on Sept. 9. He was 70 and had been a resident of T. Nagar for more than 55 years. Dharmichand was a pawn broker. Sasi said that spectacles were provided for 100 needy women on the occasion. SADANAND During my formative college days, hostel rooms were perhaps 8 feet by 8 feet for a quartet of an assortment of the southern tongues. I was a fresher (my mother & co having gone back to Kerala, the God s own country ) and there was a 6-foot tall Telugu chap of 16, a South Arcot Muslim chap, a Tamilian from Kancheepuram and I, a Malayalee, in the Umadabag Hostel on Mount Road within the Govt. Arts College campus. Young tongues talk and talk and, like most hostlers, the rest of the night is spent in murdering the trillions of mosquitoes licensed by God to free treats of the best young blood. The poly-tongued room mates, while at the night hunt, were at their loquacious best on the topic of a leader called Annadurai, which went right over my head. But I pretended to be abreast of the new southern breed of leaders and lent my ears unsparingly. Though Keralayeen E.M.S.Namboodiripad had risen above the crowd and stuttered miles ahead in the political circus, Anna gave the powers that be sleepless nights. Thiruvengadam, my room mate, was an ardent Anna worshipper who would tonguelash anyone who said a word against the leader. After my ascension to Presidency college, I never saw Thiru, naturally because he had by then conquered space and gone up to be in the reception committee to welcome Anna who had made many snuff sellers in Madras millionaires, and they influenced the Corporation to name the housing complex Anna Nagar. Now we have a Gandhi-topee wearing Anna tilting against the Constitution and the Indian Penal Code at Ram Leela grounds Poor Anna-2 does not even have pinches of snuff for pep thinking. External aids or a full stomach are not the modern weapons when self flagellation in Gandhi-style is the political USP discovered by A-2. I hope he had consulted lawyers on the reach of Section 309 of I.P.C.which makes the attempt to commit suicide a crime punishable with a sentence of imprisonment upto one year. The section drafted by Macaulay before Gandhi s time has Anna in its sweep as his starvation could be fatal unless the attempt was stopped by law. Mr. Government, use the LAW at once.
