Hymn of confession As with Gladness Men of Old Holy Jesus, ev ry day keep us in the narrow way; and when earthly things are past, bring our ransomed souls at last where they need no star to guide, where no clouds thy glory hide. text by William Chatterton Dix, 1860; music by Conrad Kocher, 1838, dix Silent prayers of confession Assurance of God s pardoning grace 1 John 4:9-10, 15 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. If anyone acknowledges that Jesus is the Son of God, God lives in him and he in God. Words of institution Communion affirmation Leader: God of all good, you have prepared for us a feast; and because we are unworthy in ourselves to sit down as guests, we wholly rest on the merits of Jesus and hide ourselves in his righteousness. All: In this supper we remember the agony of the cross and the cost of redemption. We rejoice in your eternal love, boundless grace, and infinite compassion. Leader: We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again. All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. based on The Valley of Vision prayer, The Lord s Supper pg. 195 Prayer of consecration Distribution of the elements For the bread 230 Thou Who Wast Rich beyond All Splendor For the cup Of the Father s Love Begotten Soloist and congregation Of the Father s love begotten ere the worlds began to be, he is Alpha and Omega, he the source, the ending he, of the things that are, that have been, and that future years shall see, evermore and evermore!
O that birth forever blessed, when the virgin, full of grace, by the Holy Ghost conceiving, bore the Savior of our race; and the babe, the world s Redeemer, first revealed his sacred face, evermore and evermore! This is he whom heav n-taught singers sang of old with one accord, whom the scriptures of the prophets promised in their faithful word; now he shines, the long-expected; let creation praise its Lord, evermore and evermore! Luke 1:26-38 26 In the sixth month, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you. 29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. 31 You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. 32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end. 34 How will this be, Mary asked the angel, since I am a virgin? 35 The angel answered, The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. 37 For nothing is impossible with God. 38 I am the Lord s servant, Mary answered. May it be to me as you have said. Then the angel left her. ADVENT 2018 SERMON SERIES LUKE 1-2: REJOICE, YOUR KING HAS COME! The long-expected King has come to the earth as a child. A child whose mother s womb is visited powerfully by the Holy Spirit. A child whose Kingdom shall never end. A child whose announcement causes a cousin to leap for joy in the womb. A child called Rescuer, Redeemer, and Savior. A child who fulfills the promises given to Abraham, David, and Israel. A child who is the shining light for those living in darkness. A child who is good news of great joy for all the people. A child called Lord. A child who is welcomed by a host of heavenly warriors singing and setting the sky on fire. This child is the King of all Kings and his name is Jesus. Rejoice, your King has come!
