Sve Sve kmr{yiért> s<isiï< léte nr>, Sv-kmR-inrt> isiï< ywa ivndit tcd&[u. 18.45. sve sve karmaëyabhirataù saàsiddhià labhate naraù sva-karma-nirataù siddhià yathä vindati tacchåëu 18.45 Devoted, each to his own duty, man attains Perfection. How, engaged in his own duty, he attains Perfection, listen. 1

46. yt> àv&iärœ-éutana< yen svrm!-#d< ttm!, SvkmR[a tm!-a_ycyr isiï< ivndit manv>. 18.46. yataù pravåttir-bhütänäà yena sarvam-idaà tatam svakarmaëä tam-abhyarcya siddhià vindati mänavaù 18.46 From Whom is the evolution of all beings, by Whom all this is pervaded, worshipping Him with one's own duty, man attains Perfection. 47. ïeyan!-svxmaer ivgu[> pr-xmart!-svnuiótat!, SvÉav-inyt< kmr k vrn!-napnaeit ikilb;m!. 18.47. çreyän-svadharmo viguëaù para-dharmät-svanuñöhität svabhäva-niyataà karma kurvan-näpnoti kilbiñam 18.47 Better is one's own duty (though) destitute of merits, than the duty of another well-performed. He who does the duty ordained by his own nature incurs no sin. 48. shj< kmr kaentey sdae;m!-aip n Tyjet!, svarrméa ih dae;e[ xumenai irvav&ta>. 18.48. sahajaà karma kaunteya sadoñam-api na tyajet sarvärambhä hi doñeëa dhümenägnirivävåtäù 18.48 One should not abandon, O Kaunteya, the duty to which one is born, though faulty; for, are not all undertakings enveloped by evil, as fire by smoke? 49. AsKt-buiÏ> svrç ijtatma ivgt-sp&h>, ne:kmyr-isiï< prma< s<nyasenaixgcdit. 18.49. asakta-buddhiù sarvatra jitätmä vigata-spåhaù naiñkarmya-siddhià paramäaà sannyäsenädhigacchati 18.49 He whose intellect is unattached everywhere, who has subdued his self, from whom desire has fled, he, through renunciation, attains the Supreme State of Freedom-from-action. 50. isiï< àaptae ywa äü twapnaeit inbaex me, smasenev kaentey inóa }ansy ya pra. 18.50. siddhià präpto yathä brahma tathäpnoti nibodha me samäsenaiva kaunteya niñöhä jïänasya yä parä 18.50 How he, who has attained perfection, reaches BRAHMAN (the Eternal), that in brief do you learn from Me, O! Kaunteya, that Supreme State-of-Knowledge. 51. buï(a ivzuïya yukt> x&tyatman< inymy c, zbdadin!-iv;ya<s!-tyktva rag-öe;ae VyudSy c. 18.51. buddhyä viçuddhayä yuktaù dhåtyätmänaà niyamya ca çabdädén-viñayäàs-tyaktvä räga-dveñau vyudasya ca 18.51 2

Endowed with a pure intellect; controlling the self by firmness; relinquishing sound and other objects; and abandoning attraction and hatred; 52. ivivkt-sevi l vazi ytvakœ-kay-mans>, Xyan-yaeg-prae inty< veragy< smupaiït>. 18.52. vivikta-sevé laghväçé yataväk-käya-mänasaù dhyäna-yoga-paro nityaà vairägyaà samupäçritaù 18.52 Dwelling in solitude; eating but little; speech, body and mind subdued; always engaged in meditation and concentration; taking refuge in dispassion; 53. Ah<kar< bl< dp kam< ³aex< pir hm!, ivmucy inmrm> zant> äü-éuyay klpte. 18.53. ahaìkäraà balaà darpaà kämaà krodhaà parigraham vimucya nirmamaù çäntaù brahma-bhüyäya kalpate 18.53 Having abandoned egoism, power, arrogance, desire, anger and aggrandizement, and freed from the notion of 'mine, ' and so peaceful --- he is fit to become BRAHMAN. 54. äü-éut> àsúatma n zaecit n ka'œ]it, sm> sver;u ÉUte;u mdœ-éikt< léte pram!. 18.54. brahma-bhütaù prasannätmä na çocati na käìkñati samaù sarveñu bhüteñu mad-bhaktià labhate paräm 18.54 Becoming BRAHMAN, serene in the Self, he neither grieves nor desires; the same to all beings, he obtains a supreme devotion towards Me. 55. ÉKTya mam!-aiéjanait yavan!-yíaism tåvt>, ttae ma< tåvtae }atva ivzte tdœ-an<trm!. 18.55. bhaktyä mäm-abhijänäti yävän-yaçcäsmi tattvataù tato mäà tattvato jïätvä viçate tadanantaram 18.55 By devotion he knows Me in Essence, what and who I am; then, having known Me in My Essence, he forthwith enters into the Supreme. 56. svr-kmar{yip sda k var[ae mdœ-vypaïy>, mtœ-àsadadœ-avapnaeit zañt< pdmœ-avyym!. 18.56. sarva-karmäëyapi sadä kurväëo mad-vyapäçrayaù mat-prasädäd-aväpnoti çäçvataà padam-avyayam 18.56 Doing all actions, always taking refuge in Me, by My grace he obtains the Eternal, Indestructible State or Abode. 57. cetsa svr-kmari[ miy s<nysy mtœ-pr>, buiï-yaegm!-%paiïty miccä> stt< Év. 18.57. 3

cetasä sarva-karmäëi mayi sannyasya mat-paraù buddhi-yogam-upäçritya maccittaù satataà bhava 18.57 Mentally renouncing all actions in Me, having Me as the Highest Goal, resorting to the YOGA -ofdiscrimination, ever fix your mind in Me. 58. miccä> svr-êgari[ mtœ-àsadatœ-tir:yis, Aw cetœ-tvmœ-ah<karatœ n ïae:yis ivn'œúyis. 18.58. maccittaù sarva-durgäëi mat-prasädät-tariñyasi atha cettvam-ahaìkärät na çroñyasi vinaìkñyasi 18.58 Fixing your mind upon Me, you shall, by My grace, overcome all obstacles, but if, from egoism, you will not hear Me, you shall perish. 59. ydœ-ah<karmœ-aaiïty n yaetsy #it mnyse, imwye; VyvsaySte àk«itstva< inyaeúyit. 18.59. yad-ahaìkäram-äçritya na yotsya iti manyase mithyaiña vyavasäyaste prakåtistväà niyokñyati 18.59 Filled with egoism, if you think, "I will not fight, " vain in this, your resolve; (for) nature will compel you. 60. SvÉavjen kaentey inbï> Sven kmr[a, ktu necdis ynmaehatœ kir:ysyvzaeip tt!. 18.60. svabhävajena kaunteya nibaddhaù svena karmaëä kartuà necchasi yanmohät kariñyasyavaçopi tat 18.60 O son of Kunti, bound by your own KARMA (action) born of your own nature, that which, through delusion you wish not to do, even that you shall do, helplessly. 61. $ñr> svr-éutana< ùdœ-deze=ju Rn itóit, æamynœ-svr-éutain yùaêfain mayya. 18.61. éçvaraù sarva-bhütänäà håd-deçe'rjuna tiñöhati bhrämayan-sarva-bhütäni yanträrüòhäni mäyayä 18.61 The Lord dwells in the hearts of all beings, O Arjuna, causing all beings, by His illusive power, to revolve, as if mounted on a machine. 62. tmev zr[< gcd svr-éaven Éart, tt!-àsadat!-pra< zaint< Swan< àapsyis zañtm!. 18.62. tameva çaraëaà gaccha sarva-bhävena bhärata tat-prasädät-paräà çäntià sthänaà präpsyasi çäçvatam 18.62 Fly unto Him for refuge with all your being, O Bharata; by His grace you shall obtain Supreme Peace (and) the Eternal Abode. 4

63. #it te }anm!-aaoyat< guýad!-guýtr< mya, ivm&zyetd!-aze;e[ ywecdis twa k é. 18.63. iti te jïänam-äkhyätaà guhyäd-guhyataraà mayä vimåçyaitad-açeñeëa yathecchasi tathä kuru 18.63 Thus, the "Wisdom" which is a greater secret than all secrets, has been declared to you by Me; having reflected upon it fully, you now act as you choose. 64. svr-guýtm< ÉUy> z&[u me prm< vc>, #òae=is me Fm!-#it ttae vúyaim te ihtm!. 18.64. sarva-guhyatamaà bhüyaù çåëu me paramaà vacaù iñöo'si me dåòham-iti tato vakñyämi te hitam 18.64 Hear again My supreme word, most secret of all; because you are dearly beloved of Me, therefore, I will tell you what is good (for you). 65. mnmna Év mdœ-ékt> mdœ-yaji ma< nmsk é, mam!-@ve:yis sty< te àitjane iàyae=is me. 18.65. manmanä bhava mad-bhaktaù mad-yäjé mäà namaskuru mäm-evaiñyasi satyaà te pratijäne priyo'si me 18.65 Fix your mind upon Me; be devoted to Me; sacrifice for Me; bow down to Me; you shall come, surely then, to Me alone; truly do I promise to you, (for) you are dear to Me. 66. svr-xmarnœ-pirtyjy mam!-@k< zr[< ìj, Ah< Tva< svr-pape_y> maeúyiy:yaim ma zuc>. 18.66. sarva-dharmän-parityajya mäm-ekaà çaraëaà vraja ahaà tväà sarva-päpebhyaù mokñyayiñyämi mä çucaù 18.66 Abandoning all DHARMAS, (of the body, mind, and intellect), take refuge in Me alone; I will liberate thee from all sins; grieve not. 67. #d< te natpskay naéktay kdacn, n cazuïu;ve vacy< n c ma< yae=_ysuyit. 18.67. idaà te nätapaskäya näbhaktäya kadäcana na cäçuçrüñave väcyaà na ca mäà yo'bhyasüyati 18.67 This is never to be spoken by you to one who is devoid of austerities or devotion, nor to one who does not render service, nor to one who desires not to listen, nor to one who cavils at Me. 68. y #d< prm< guý< mdœ-ékte:viéxasyit, ÉiKt< miy pra< k«tva mam!-@ve:ytys<zy>. 18.68. ya idaà paramaà guhyaà mad-bhakteñvabhidhäsyati bhaktià mayi paräà kåtvä mäm-evaiñyatyasaàçayaù 18.68 5

He who, with supreme devotion to Me, will teach this supreme secret to My devotees, shall doubtless come to Me. 69. n c tsman!-mnu:ye;u kiín!-me iàyk«äm>, Éivta n c me tsmad! ANy> iàytrae Éuiv. 18.69. na ca tasmän-manuñyeñu kaçcin-me priyakåttamaù bhavitä na ca me tasmäd anyaù priyataro bhuvi 18.69 Nor is there any among men who does dearer service to Me, nor shall there be another on earth dearer to Me than he. 70. AXye:yte c y #m< xmy s<vadm!-aavyae>, }an-y}en tenahm! #ò> Syam!-#it me mit>. 18.70. adhyeñyate ca ya imaà dharmyaà saàvädam-ävayoù jïäna-yajïena tenäham iñöaù syäm-iti me matiù 18.70 And he who will study this sacred dialogue of ours, by him I shall have been worshipped by the "sacrifice-of-wisdom, " such is My conviction. 71. ïïavan!-ansuyí z&[uyad!-aip yae nr>, sae=ip mukt> zuéa~llaekan! àapnuyat!-pu{y-kmr[am!. 18.71. çraddhävän-anasüyaçca çåëuyäd-api yo naraù so'pi muktaù çubhäðllokän präpnuyät-puëya-karmaëäm 18.71 That man also, who hears this, full of faith and free from malice, he too, liberated, shall attain to the happy worlds of those righteous deeds. 72. kiccd!-@tcà t< pawr TvyEka e[ cetsa, kiccd!-a}an-s<maeh> ànòste xnãy. 18.72. kaccidetacchrutaà pärtha tvayaikägreëa cetasä kaccid-ajïäna-sammohaù pranañöaste dhanaïjaya 18.72 Has this been heard, O son of Pritha, with single-pointed mind? Has the distraction, caused by your 'ignorance, ' been dispelled, O Dhananjaya? Arjuna said: AjuRn %vac, arjuna uväca 73. nòae maeh> Sm&itrœ-lBxa Tvtœ-àsadanœ-mya=Cyut, iswtae=ism gt-s<deh> kir:ye vcn< tv. 18.73. nañöo mohaù småtir-labdhä tvat-prasädän-mayä'cyuta sthito'smi gata-sandehaù kariñye vacanaà tava 18.73 6

Destroyed is my delusion, as I have now gained my memory (knowledge) through your grace, O Achyuta. I am firm; my doubts are gone. I will do according to your word (bidding). Sanjaya said: s<jy %vac, saïjaya uväca 74. #Tyh< vasudevsy pawrsy c mhatmn>, s<vadm!-#mm!-aïae;m! AÑ t< raem-h;r[m!. 18.74. ityahaà väsudevasya pärthasya ca mahätmanaù saàvädam-imam-açrauñam adbhutaà roma-harñaëam 18.74 Thus have I heard this wonderful dialogue between Vaasudeva and the high-souled Partha, which causes the hair to stand on end. 75.
