Ministry gathers us and makes us a faith family... October 22nd, 2017, 29th Sunday In Ordinary Time: The bishops pastoral letter on stewardship reminds us, Jesus not only calls people to him but also forms them and sends them out in his service. Being sent on a mission is a consequence of being a disciple. POWER STRUGGLE Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday's Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus' response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power--the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. This Week: Saturday, October 21st / Sunday, October 22nd, 2017 Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reflections on Today s Readings: FOCUS: Let us strive to be people of faith, hope and love. In the second reading, Saint Paul gives thanks to God for the assembly of Christians at Thessalonica, who were proving to be faithful disciples. The Gospel Paul preached to them, and the Gospel we hear today, is filled with the power of the Holy Spirit; let our lives bear witness to its truth and power. LITURGY OF THE WORD The prophet Isaiah writes of God who knows us, loves and calls us by name. We are reminded that there is no other God besides Him. Saint Paul, beginning his Letter to the Thessalonians, affirms their work of faith and love, saying he knows they were chosen by God. In Matthew s Gospel, the Pharisees hope to trick Jesus with their question about paying taxes. Jesus tells them to pay to Caesar what is his, and to give God what belongs to Him. "HHS accomplishes its mission through programs and initiatives that cover a wide spectrum of activities, serving and protecting Americans at every stage of life, beginning at conception," the plan reads. Conception as the start of life is mentioned again in the third goal of the blueprint.
