ST. ANTHONY CATHOLIC CHURCH Archdiocese of Portland 9905 SW McKenzie St Tigard, OR 97223 Phone 503-639-4179 Fax 503-624-2364 ww.satigard.org Greetings, Parish Office Hours/ Horario De Oficina Monday & Friday/Lunes Y Viernes 8:30AM 12:30PM Tuesday to Thursday/Martes a Jueves 8:30AM 5PM Tuesday to Wednesday/Martes a Miércoles 6:30PM 9PM Saturday/Sábado 8:30 AM 12PM Sunday /Domingo 8AM 4PM This week I present an article from the United States Bishops Website: On the last Sunday of each liturgical year, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe, or Christ the King. Pope Pius XI instituted this feast in 1925 with his encyclical Quas primas ( In the first ) to respond to growing secularism. He recognized that attempting to thrust Jesus Christ and his holy law out of public life would result in continuing discord among people and nations. Today reminds us that while governments come and go, Christ reigns as King forever. During the early twentieth century, in Mexico, Russia, and in many parts of Europe, atheistic regimes threatened not just the Catholic Church and its faithful but civilization itself. Pope Pius XI s encyclical gave Catholics hope and while governments around them crumbled the assurance that Christ the King shall reign forever. Pope Pius XI says that Christ reign[s] in the hearts of men, both by reason of the keenness of his intellect and the extent of his knowledge, and also because he is very truth, and it is from him that truth must be obediently received by all mankind. In 2018, the Church faces pressures from without and crisis from within. In addition to the challenges that Christians in a secular society must confront, the body of Christ must also tend to the wounds inflicted on the Church by priests and bishops who either committed acts of sexual abuse themselves or failed to respond to abuse with justice when they had the opportunity. Pope Pius XI reminds the faithful that Christ reigns as king of the entire world forever. Let us rededicate ourselves this year to acknowledging the reign of Jesus Christ and his Sacred Heart in every aspect of our lives. My brothers and sisters, Christ is the head of our Church. Christ is our one and only King. When all else seems like it is falling apart, you can be sure of one thing, our KING walks with us, suffers with us and embraces us in our pain as well as our joys. In this new liturgical year, which begins next Sunday, let us make a commitment for real conversion, for real growth. True Discipleship must be our goal and true evangelization is what we desire for all of us. Have a great week! Your friend, The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe November 25, 2018

Weekly Reflection... In "The Wizard of Oz," when Toto pulled back the curtain, Dorothy discovered the Wizard was a fake a little person with a big voice, big talk with little substance, all show and no go. If you think about it, that s like Lucifer (the Devil). He s described in the Bible as the biggest liar ever, with empty promises, no substance, and a litany of accusations about our brethren. He s an expert at distracting us when we pray, making us think, This is a waste of time. God can t help me. Too many things are working against me. Let s call the enemy s bluff, pull the curtain back, open up our spiritual eyes, and identify who s behind a lot of the stuff we re always blaming on our circumstances and upbringing. Remember, Greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world. Our power to defeat the enemy can be found in Ephesians CHRISTMAS HELP Again this year on Dec. 15th we will be hosting a Christmas shopping day for families who need a little extra help this year. Coming soon will be the wish list for now we are in need of volunteers to receive donations and set up. We are using Signup Genius and you can contact Gerlinde at GLamer@satigard.org if you have questions. https://www.signupgenius.com/ go/4090d45adab23a6fb6-setting 3

CHRISTMAS CHOIR I would like to invite all singers and musicians, young and old to join our Christmas Family Choir. We will be providing the music for the Christmas Eve Family masses. This is a wonderful opportunity to pray and serve together as a family; all while making some make some new friends and singing some of your favorite carols. This year we are offering two options to sing with the family Choir: 4PM and 6:30PM Christmas Eve masses. Whether you have young children, are a retired couple, or just love to sing, all are invited. Please contact Nichlas Schaal at nschaal@satigard.org for more information. You can also visit Welcome to Communio Cafe! We now have specialty coffee drinks, fresh fruit, pastries and breakfast sandwiches. Come and join fellow parishioners after mass for fellowship and great conversation! At this time we are primarily open on Sundays with a plan to expand operating hours during the week and during special events. If you or a ministry you are involved in would like to be a part of the Communio Cafe please contact Fr. John Henderson at History of the Jesse Tree: Jesse Trees are a very old Christmas Tradition that first started in medieval times. They are used to help tell the story of the Bible from Creation to the Christmas. The name comes from Jesse who was the Father of King David. A branch is a sign of new life and new beginnings. Jesus was a descendent of King David and as Christians; we believe that Jesus is the new branch. 5 COMMUNIO COFFEE ADVENT JESSE TREE The first Jesse Trees were large carvings, tapestries or even stained-glass windows that were put in Churches to help illiterate people learn about salvation history. Today, Jesse Trees are used as a kind of Advent Calendar. You can use a normal Christmas tree of a banner in the shape of a tree. Each day through Advent a special decoration of ornament, that tells a story from the Bible, is hung on the tree. Here at St. Anthony we will have our very own Jesse Tree at the entrance of the church starting on December 1. New ornaments will be placed on our tree each day leading up to Christmas. You can also make your own Jesse Tree at home. A simple google search will provide many options for purchase or DIY at home with your family. For more info, please contact

ADVENT CALENDAR DATES FOR 2018 Between Darkness and Light The season of Advent is a period of CELEBRATION, HOPE, and REPENTANCE. We spend time in celebrating the coming of Jesus Christ at Christmas. Our Lord s birth shattered the darkness and brought forth a shining star, which illuminated the world. Our lives would be changed forever. Believing in the birth of Christ, we also remember that Jesus is truly present with us today through the Holy Spirit. Our lives must reflect the reality that Jesus is our way, truth and life. Advent is also a time for all of us to be hopeful of his return at the Second Coming of Christ. This calls for repentance as part of our preparation. Advent is that time of waiting, that time between darkness and light. So my brothers and sisters, let us make this time a celebration filled with joy, a time of hope and anticipation, and finally a time for real conversion which calls for repentance. We are called to fast and confess our sins. December 2 - First Sunday of Advent December 4-7:00pm Francis Hall (Fr.
