Adoration of the Most Blessed Sacrament If the people of ancient times showed such tremendous reverence and devotion to Our Lord in the presence of the Ark of the Covenant, how much greater should be the reverence and devotion to the Presence in the Blessed Sacrament paid by the parishioners here in our parish, St. Rose of Lima; not only adoration of the Real Presence in the Adoration Chapel or the tabernacle, but, also, the receiving of the precious Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ, in communion at Mass; daily, if possible. Over the centuries, thousands of people have traveled great distances, and still do, to visit the relics of the Saints and to marvel at hearing about their wonderful deeds. They worship at magnificent churches dedicated to these Saints and pay homage to their blessed remains in a reliquary. But God, the Saint of Saints, the Creator of all things and the Lord of Angels, is here present on the altar before us, both in the tabernacle and in the Adoration Chapel. What prevents us from visiting Him during the week? Can we not find time, make time, to spend fifteen minutes a week in talking and listening to Jesus? Hopefully, as has happened to hundreds of people, one will discover that fifteen minutes is not enough. Many people will stop by two or three times a week just to say "Hi, Jesus." Eventually, this quiet, prayerful time will expand to one hour a week. This one hour is a reflection of the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane when he admonished Peter, James and John for not being able to spend one hour with Him in prayer, as He began His Passion. Reflecting on this, well remember when was in my childhood, my mother would remind us as we set out for "sand-lot" baseball or just goofing around, that we better stop by the church to say "Hi" to Jesus. Of course, we barely stopped, but we said "Hi Jesus." As enter my ninth decade of life, still greet Him with "Hi, Jesus" and hear Him respond: "Hi, Jimmy" and then settle down, to listen to Him tell me how messed up my life so far and how to make correction. The question as to what to do with the time we give Him inevitably arises. There is no "set of instructions" in regards how you spend your time in adoration, be it fifteen minutes or an hour. There is nothing incorrect about praying the rosary, spiritual reading or just sitting there and "listening" to Jesus. We do not always have to do all the talking. Some groups in our parish meet in an evening to worship by praise, the rosary or simply rote prayer; or in silent prayer, vocal prayer and/or singing. In the Sacrament of the altar He is wholly present, God and Man. And here, also, in all its abundance, is the fruit of eternal salvation whenever He is received worthily and devoutly. Every priest should make sure that the people are offered an opportunity to spend quiet time with our Lord. It may not always be convenient to provide an Adoration chapel, but He is, also, the same Jesus, Body and Blood, the Real Presence in the tabernacle. So, what draws us to the time of adoration? It is not just curiosity. We are drawn by our firm faith, our devout hope and our pure love for Him Who deserves to get our "ear" for a few minutes out of our daily schedules. It is truly amazing to hear the stories of people who were reluctant to come before Jesus in adoration. Once you begin, believe me, He will put a very holy "guilt trip" on you and you will find yourselves wanting, needing, and anticipating more time with Him. The real "value" of this adoration comes with the realization that when the "seed is sown" it can land on rocky soil, it can be neglected or rejected, it can be "choked" by the cares of this world, or it can change in intensity, quality and frequency. It is the latter that brings up before the
