A Joyful Noise December 2018 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth. A Visit to Chaplains on the Harbor Senior Warden Guy Davidson Christ Episcopal Church 1216 Seventh Street Anacortes WA 98221 360-293-5790 office@christchurchanacortes.org www.christchurchanacortes.org Office Hours: Monday-Thursday 10:00 am Noon 1:00 4:00 pm Sunday Services Christ Church Morning Prayer 2nd Sunday Chandler s Square Community 1300 O Avenue, Anacortes Morning Prayer 2nd Sunday Weekday Services Wednesdays Morning Prayer Thursdays Centering Prayer Mark Perschbacher and I took a road trip a couple of weeks ago. We went down to Aberdeen and Westport, Washington, to visit with Chaplains on the Harbor. The purpose of our trip was a follow-up to Reverend Sarah Monroe s visit here last Spring. We wanted to see what they were doing, and support them as best we could. Chaplains on the Harbor is a church, an Episcopal church, that functions as a humanitarian organization and ministers to the homeless population of the area. They don t have much of a traditional congregation. No pledgers, no coffee hour committee, no altar guild...their average attendance at Tuesday service is 10. But, with that limited beginning, they branch out and provide a wealth of services to the area: They have 11 full and part time staff members. They have a cold weather shelter. They feed people 4 days a week. Up to 100 on Sundays. They have a clothing closet for the homeless. They have a jail ministry. They have a farm, which provides training and jobs, and grows vegetables which they use in their feeding programs and a weekly CSA program providing income. They work with a homeless camp on the river which has a hard core population of over 120, even now in the winter. They have dreams of providing housing programs. They have plans to open a restaurant. They provide legal assistance. They minister to drug addicts, felons, the hungry, the homeless. They provide training and jobs for the down and out. Guy Davidson, Chris, Rev. Sarah s Assistant, & Rev. Sarah Monroe

Their actual congregation might be small, but the community they serve is large, over 400. But it goes on...they ve been looking at gang ministries in LA to see if their programs might apply up here in Washington. They re working with national organizations to support efforts to legislate help and programs for economically distressed areas. They ve been to Baltimore to see their housing programs. When Mark and I visited them, we went shopping for their meals, we helped them get ready for opening the cold shelter, and we spent hours talking to them about their mission and their needs. One need that we thought we could help with was the clothing closet. They gave us a list of clothing items needed, we gave it to the Red Door Thrift Shop management and already we have 6 large bags to bring down. Over the next couple of weeks before we make a delivery trip, we ll continue to gather needed items. We also responded to their plea for emergency funding and brought them funds from the outreach budget, and this past Sunday, the clergy designated the loose offering to go to the Chaplains on the Harbor. I am proud to be part of such a giving community. Through all of our efforts, financial and talent and time, through the dedication and hard work of the Red Door staff and with the leadership of the ministry circle and Bishop s committee, we can serve Christ and change the world. Live in abundance. God has given us great gifts. Be good stewards of those gifts. Take time, take stock, give thanks and joyfully share. Adult Youth Group On November 4, twenty-two people gathered at the Ramerman home for the formation meeting of the Adult Youth Group for those over seventy. We shared good conversation and fellowship, and many ideas for future gatherings and activities. We plan to go caroling on December 18. Please contact Reverend Diane if you would like to join in there is always room for a few more folks. January s gathering is tentatively planned as a game night.

Though the book contains profiles of many different people, the central storyline is that of the relationship between Stevenson, the organization he founded (the Equal Justice Initiative, or EJI), and Walter McMillian, a black man wrongfully accused of murder and sentenced to death in Alabama in the late 1980 s. Throughout the book, Stevenson provides historical context, as well as his own moral and philosophical reflections on the American criminal justice and prison systems. He ultimately argues that society should choose empathy and mercy over condemnation and punishment. This is a message that should sound very familiar to all Christians. Books are available for purchase from Christ Church through Sandi Davidson. Join in the discussion! All are welcome. Children s Christmas Play Sunday, December 23 Service Middle School Retreat Siriana Simonsen I really enjoyed going to Saint Paul s Church J.Y.C. in Bellingham. I met a lot of very nice people including Bishop Rickel and I had a very nice host home. I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go, I even learned a lot about my faith. When I attended this event I realized how excited I am to be going to Camp Huston again next summer.

What are you waiting for? What are your hopes? What are you grateful for, as you contemplate the coming of the Christ Child? Place your prayer in the small red Prayer Box in the Narthex. Write as many prayers as you wish no need to sign your name. On Christmas Day, the church will be open from 9 am to noon for meditation and prayer. Any who come in are asked to quietly read some of the prayers from the Prayer Box as they kneel before the altar and light a votive candle. If you are available to serve as an Open Church host for one hour on Christmas Morning, please contact The Reverend Diane Ramerman. Six hosts are needed so that there will be two in the church at all times.
