NOTES-N-NEWS If you build it, they will come! My husband Skip made this birdfeeder for me to have at the office. Birds show up Juncos, Sparrows, Chickadees, and even a Towhee and a pair of Doves. I don t mind the duo above because they are native Oregon squirrels. Douglas' Squirrel Tamiasciurus douglasii The Douglas' Squirrel is one of the smaller tree squirrels in Oregon. The color and markings of this squirrel differ individually, geographically and seasonally, appearing a dusky olive to brownish gray with an indistinct band of reddish brown with a blackish band along the flanks. Douglas' squirrels are active during the daylight hours year-round; although they may remain in their nests or tree dens for a day or two during inclement weather. Thank you to Pat Pettit for giving me her plant which had outgrown itself in her home! It is a ZZ plant. It must be happy because it has a new shoot coming up. It is a beautiful plant! Zamioculcas is a tropical perennial plant native to eastern Africa, from Kenya south to northeastern South Africa. WEATHER RELATED CANCELLATIONS If weather conditions are bad, church services, meetings, and activities may be cancelled due to hazardous driving conditions. In general, if local schools have cancellations, we may also cancel church activities. I will be working on a phone-chain so that everyone can be contacted. Weather related messages will be posted on the church office phone and by email. I will contact the local radio station to announce any cancellations too. 3
500 Years of Evangelical Reformation 1517-2017 When Martin Luther posted his "Ninety-five Theses" on the church door in Wittenberg in 1517, no one expected the breadth of evangelical reforms in Christian teaching and practice that followed. In every dimension of Christian faith a renewed trust in God's forgiving mercy replaced a reliance on teachings and practices that, like the sale of indulgences, were vulnerable to abuse and corruption. Preaching a few years later, Luther said, "I opposed indulgences... but never with force. I simply taught, preached, and wrote God's Word; otherwise I did nothing. I did nothing; the Word did everything." When he began to propose reforms in worship, he wrote similar words. "This is the sum of the matter: let everything be done so that the Word may have free course." Nearly 500 years later, the results of this evangelical confidence in God's forgiving and liberating Word are evident today in Christian communities of all types. In the coming 2017 year ELCA members, congregations and synods will observe the anniversary of this evangelical reformation in a variety of ways with numerous partners. Please visit the ELCA website at www.elca500.org. 4
