Meditation: Psalm 26 p. 128 OPENING RESPONSIVE PSALM (Ps. 37) P Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. C Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him, and He will act. P He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. C Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him; P Fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices! C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Delight yourself in the LORD, and He will give you the desires of your heart. HYMN: TLH #367 Hail, Thou Once Despised Jesus P We begin our Savior s worship service today in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen! CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION: We come before God recognizing that we are sinful and daily need His forgiveness. P We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve Him as His dear children. But we have disobeyed Him and

deserve only His wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to Him and plead for His mercy. C Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from conception. In countless ways I have sinned against You and do not deserve to be called Your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to Your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt. P God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, He has removed your guilt forever. You are His own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to His will! C Amen! LORD, HAVE MERCY and GLORY TO GOD

PRAYER OF THE DAY: P Let us pray... through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. C Amen. OLD TESTAMENT READING Jeremiah 15:15-21 O LORD, You know; Remember me and visit me, And take vengeance for me on my persecutors. In Your enduring patience, do not take me away. Know that for Your sake I have suffered rebuke. 16 Your words were found, and I ate them, And Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O LORD God of hosts. 17 I did not sit in the assembly of the mockers, Nor did I rejoice; I sat alone because of Your hand, For You have filled me with indignation. 18 Why is my pain perpetual And my wound incurable, Which refuses to be healed? Will You surely be to me like an unreliable stream, As waters that fail? 19 Therefore thus says the LORD: "If you return, Then I will bring you back; You shall stand before Me; If you take out the precious from the vile, You shall be as My mouth. Let them return to you, But you must not return to them. 20 And I will make you to this people a fortified bronze wall; And they will fight against you, But they shall not prevail against you; For I am with you to save you And deliver you," says the LORD. 21 "I will deliver you from the hand of the wicked, And I will redeem you from the grip of the terrible." EPISTLE READING Romans 12:9-21 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good. 10 Be kindly affectionate to one another with brotherly love, in honor giving preference to one another; 11 not lagging in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation, continuing steadfastly in prayer; 13 distributing to the needs of the saints, given to hospitality. 14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16 Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. 17 Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18 If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will

repay," says the Lord. 20 Therefore "If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head." 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. P Blessed are they who hear the Word of God and keep it. CONFESSION OF FAITH The Apostles Creed The Apostles Creed is a summary of Christian faith as taught by the Apostles. We boldly confess what God has taught us to believe. I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen. PRE-SERMON HYMN: WS #762 This is He SERMON Matthew 16:21-26 From that time Jesus began to show to His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things

from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised the third day. 22 Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, "Far be it from You, Lord; this shall not happen to You!" 23 But He turned and said to Peter, "Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." 24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 "For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 "For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? OFFERTORY Focus on the Cross! I. The Necessity of Christ s II. The Privilege of Our Own T T T SERMON HYMN: TLH #532 Thy Way, Not Mine, O Lord

KINSHIP Sponsors Needed - CLC Project KINSHIP provides for orphans and seminary students in India, Nepal and Africa through the kind sponsorship of stateside CLC members. Two new Bible Schools/Seminaries are opening in Togo and the Democratic Republic of

Congo this year, and so there is a new need for sponsors right now. You can sponsor Togo students at $30 per month or Congo students at $40 per month. In India sponsorships are needed for BELC students at $35 per month and CLCI students at $40 per month. Consider supporting a student with family members or other families. If you are interested in sponsoring a man who is preparing for the Lutheran ministry in India or Africa, please contact KINSHIP Committee member Pastor David Fuerstenau, 426 Buren Road, Ketchikan, Alaska 99901; (907) 225-2842; djfuerstenau@kpunet.net. CLC Call News - The St. Luke s Lutheran, Lemmon SD, has called the Rev. Mark Weis, pastor of Grace Lutheran, Cape Coral FL. <> The Rev. Michael Wilke, pastor of Gethsemane Lutheran, Saginaw MI, has returned the call to Immanuel Lutheran, Mankato MN. Christian Women s Retreat - The Southeast congregations of the CLC are organizing the Fourth Annual Southeastern Women s Retreat for women of the CLC. It will be held November 10-12, 2017 in Savannah, Georgia. While hosted by the congregations of Southeastern CLC, all are invited to join us! Last year a strong number of women from across the CLC attended, ranging from South Carolina, to Georgia, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Texas and Washington. The estimated cost for the retreat is between $158 - $371 for the weekend (depending on how many you share your room with) and includes food and lodging. More details are available in the separate Registration Form (will be soon available through your pastor). If you have any questions please contact: Amy Osborne - (651-329-3662 - newyorker13@hotmail.com) or Pastor Matthew Hanel (972-733-4535 hanel95@hotmail.com). Consider some time this fall to attend the retreat in beautiful Savannah, Georgia where you will be encouraged and strengthened in Christ. Hurricane Harvey has affected our brothers and sisters in Christ in the CLC in both the Corpus Christi and Houston areas. The pastors at both congregations have reached out and informed the other CLC pastors that members of both congregations were largely spared. Thank the LORD for His protective hand on behalf of the members of our synod! Please continue to keep them and their cities in your prayers.
