We will have a Vigil Mass for this obligation on Friday evening at St. Boniface at 6 PM. We will also have a Mass at 8 AM at St. John s in Fordyce for anyone even though it is also our Advent - Women s Mass and Breakfast that morning as well. Here is where it gets a little complicated. Our Saturday evening Mass at St. Joseph will be the Vigil Mass for the 1 st Sunday of Advent. The prayers and readings will be for the 1 st Sunday of Advent and not for the Immaculate Conception Holy Day of Obligation. However, the rule for the Holy Day of Obligation is to attend Mass but it doesn t have to be the Mass for that particular Feast. So you could attend Saturday evening Mass at St. Joseph and fulfill your Holy Day Obligation for the Immaculate Conception but you would need to go to Mass again on Sunday to fulfill the Sunday Obligation. In other words, you can t get a two-fer by only attending Saturday evening. Everyone needs to attend two Masses this weekend. Now you can t say you didn t know!!! As we begin this holy season of Advent, on this first Sunday of Advent, we hear Jesus warn us that there are countless things of this world that can make us forget the one certain reality the day of the Lord s coming. Immediately following the passage of today s Advent gospel, Matthew places three parables in which Jesus gives us examples of the kinds of people for whom the Lord s coming will not be a happy experience. A wicked servant says to himself, My master is long delayed, and begins to ill-treat his fellow servants and drink with drunkards. Five foolish virgins, awaiting the coming of the bridegroom, neglect to provide oil for their lamps, and are shut out. A servant out of fear buries the talent that has been entrusted to him instead of doing something creative with it. As the climax of the three parables, Matthew gives us Jesus graphic description of what will happen in the final judgment at his coming. The outcome happy or tragic depends on how we treat each other here and now, even the least of our brothers and sisters the hungry, the thirsty, the stranger, the naked, the prisoner. Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me So with this focus of how we treat each other as really important in the outcome of our own time here on earth, I would like to use this Advent through my bulletin articles and my homilies on the 4 Sundays of Advent to focus on Marriage and Family in light of the Holy Trinity and who we are created to be, made in the image and likeness of God. continued

If marriages break down, so too do families and thus so too does civilization. One need not look far to see this reality already happening today. Marriage and family is one of the incredible gifts that God gave us from the beginning. May we pray and seek a strengthening and building up of marriages and families. Here are a few other reminders / important notes: This Wednesday is the First Wednesday of the month, so we have Family Formation at St. Boniface for our parents, parishioners and K -6 students. We have Mass at 6 followed by Family Formation at 6:30 pm. Women of our Parish save the date Saturday morning, December 8 th, Advent Women s Mass, Breakfast and Speaker (Also a Holy Day Immaculate Conception). 8 AM Mass at St. John s followed by quiche, muffins and fresh fruit breakfast in the St. John s Parish Center and guest speaker, Leisa Piper.
