Page 2 This was one of the most fun mission trips I have ever been on! Alani Dannenberg It was awesome watching our youth share their Chris an love through their work, smiles and efforts. Teresa Harrington (AKA: mama Teresa) Our mission trip to Benton Harbor was an amazing one. The kids were adorable and it was almost sad how excited they got when we showed them the basketball hoop we got them. The trip showed me that there are a lot of people with less money & less resources than us here in MI. It was lots of hard work, but it was also a lot of fun mes. Mady Buursma The best part about the trip was watching the students come together as a team. There were two different work sites and as the two groups came together for lunch and in the a ernoon a er work, the mood would go from exhausted to energized just because everyone was together again. Heather Oom This trip, as well as being a great bonding experience and opportunity to serve others, really opened my eyes to how blessed my life is. Benton Harbor is dras cally different from my hometown of Zeeland, and poverty rates are extremely high. Things that I take for granted, such as a nice house, are things that the people there can only dream of. It was amazing to see the joy that a basketball hoop and sidewalk chalk could bring to the kids a ending day camp at the church. The next me I complain about something small, I need to remember the kind of homes and lives we saw in Benton Harbor and realize God has blessed my life so much and instead of complaining, I should be thanking Him for all He has given me. I was so glad for the opportunity to serve the people in Benton Harbor and hope that the me we spent there had a posi ve impact on the community while we were there. Jami Gezon Everyone of us on this mission trip was blessed to be a blessing. Laura VanderStarre My week in Benton Harbor was so different than our last mission trip to Brooklyn, New York. The differences between Benton Harbor and Brooklyn are: we were s ll in the state, we didn t have a film crew in the way of our mission work and NO popped res!!! Benton Harbor was so much fun. The first day we were there - Thursday, July 12 - the group split into two different groups. One group stayed at the church and the other group went to work on the first house. The group that was at the church priced A LOT of items for the church garage sale that was going to be held on Friday July 13. We also hung out with the kids that go to day camp at the church during the summer. When the kids all got to the church in the morning, they played outside for a li le bit then came inside and sang songs. Pastor Lisa, who is the Director of the day camp, is very good with the children and they listen to her very well. Later that day the four students that stayed at the church went back outside with the children and at some point during the day the kids had four of us (three students and a leader) lined up on the ground doing our hair. The four of us that were ge ng our hair done were Heather, Laura, Kim and I. The other group that was working on the house were scraping the house and priming it. The next day, July 13, the groups switched. A.J, Caleigh, Jami and Mady were at the church helping Heather with the garage sale. All the money the garage sale earned went to the kids end of year celebra on. At the house this day the four students and Teresa, who was the leader, scraped the garage and painted the house. Saturday, July 14 the groups also split into two. Teresa, Alani and I went back to the house we had been working on to finish up the pain ng while the rest of the group, Jon, Ma, Heather, A.J, Jami, Caleigh, Kim, Laura and Mady, went to scrape Pastor Nate s house. We did a lot of scraping this week! A er Saturday s hard and long day of work we went to the splash pad and then to the beach to cool off. Saturday night, Dave Kool, the Site Director took the students on the roof of the church! It was so cool being able the see the city of Benton Harbor at a higher level. Dave took group pictures of the students by the cross at the top of the church. Over all this week in Benton Harbor was a life changing experience and it has also brought me closer to some of the students in Area 51!! Michelle Myaard I enjoyed growing in rela onships with the students, ge ng to know each of them be er. Ma Oom This was one of the best experiences I have ever had on a mission trip! The whole week was incredible!! It was also great that we did not lose three res and a radiator along the way. I did kinda miss the hotel stay we had last year though. Overall this was a great week!! Caleigh Harrington The kids really touched my heart. They were sweet hearts, except for the pulling of our hair during our hair make-overs. Overall this week was a blast Kimmie Pelon Our Youth Group grew into more of a family throughout our Mission Trip. We really impacted a lot of people, as well as being impacted ourselves. A.J. Bedard We had a great week learning more about God and more about our group. Also we learned how people in another area of our state live - amazingly it is so similar and yet so different. The children that we worked with were great!!! Maybe the best moment of the week for me was the look on the faces of the kids when we walked out with the basketball hoop we purchased for them. Page 4 Local Families to Benefit from Disney s The Odd Life of Timothy Green Sock Drive Holland Rescue Mission Collecting Socks to Distribute to Those in Need Warming and comforting the feet of families in need is the goal of the Association of Gospel Rescue Missions (AGRM) in cooperation with The Walt Disney Studios and Hanes. Holland Rescue Mission, an AGRM member, encourages community members to donate new socks to help local families as part of The Odd Life of Timothy Green Sock Drive. Many of the infirmities that homeless people endure are actually borne in their feet because of all the walking and standing they do, said AGRM President John Ashmen. New socks - clean, dry and without holes - will go a long way to provide comfort and care for the men, women and children who are desperate for assistance. Inspired by The Odd Life of Timothy Green, a Disney film slated for an August 15 release, the drive will be in gear until Sept. 3. A designated box is available in the gathering area by the mailboxes. Men s women s, children s & infant socks are needed. Holland Rescue Mission will distribute the socks to the families it aids. Hanes will match North American donations up to 10,000 pairs of socks. For more details about The Odd Life of Timothy Green Sock Drive, please visit https://www.agrm.org/sockdrive.
