January February 2018, Page 5 Friar for the Assembly Dear Potomac Assembly Brother Knights: I believe this is the first opportunity I have had the pleasure to address all of the Assembly members in this publication. My name is Fr. Ramon Baez. I am a parochial vicar at Good Shepherd Catholic Church. I have been a priest for over 12 years. Before my time in the seminary (St. Charles Borromeo in Philadelphia) for the Diocese of Arlington, I was in the U.S. Navy. I was a Naval Flight Officer and I spent 2,000 hours flying P-3 Orions (now practically nonexistent). My family was raised in Northern Virginia, although I was born in Puerto Rico. I am a proud Annapolis graduate (despite last year's Army-Navy collapse), and have six siblings. My mom retired from General Services Administration in 2000, and I often spent time with her in Kingstown, Alexandria where she lives. Thank you for allowing me to serve you. I hope I get to meet each and every one of you personally. I try to attend as many meetings and events as possible, and I love to meet at the Mount Vernon Council Hall #5998 for drinks and the latest news. May the Lord and His Blessed Mother keep you and may 2018 bring your family countless blessings. God bless the Knights! Welcomes New Fourth Degree Members and Movie Night November 22nd We held our November social to welcome our 7 new Sir Knights in the lounge at the Knights of Columbus Hall on November 27th. It was a family movie night beginning at 7:00 P.M. with a movie start time of 7:30. The movie was Zootopia, a Walt Disney feature animation. We provided the hamburgers and hotdogs. SK were asked to bring a salad or dessert. This was a family event and children were very welcome. It was planned as a very low key end to the Thanksgiving weekend. We enjoyed a good turnout, the kids enjoyed it, and even our SK and their families had laughs and a good time.

Colonel O'Brien was born in Albany, NY, the son of Daniel J. O'Brien and Grace Ashley O'Brien. He attended schools in Cohoes and Albany before enlisting in the U.S. Army in September 1940. He worked with General Eisenhower as part of the Supreme Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF) first in England and later in France and Germany. Upon returning to the U.S. he earned his BS and MBA from Syracuse University. O'Brien was then recalled to active duty for the Korean and Vietnam wars. Following his retirement, he served as a volunteer at the Fairfax Hospital, Sully Plantation, U.S. Army Emergency Relief and Cohoes Hospital before moving to The Fairfax, Belvoir Woods retirement community. He was a life member of the American Legion, National Association of Uniformed Services and the Retired Officers Association. He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Association U.S. Army and the Irish American Cultural Institute. He was a charter member of the Belvoir Council, Knights of Columbus and a 4th Degree Member of the Potomac, Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the U.S. Army Emergency Relief Office, Ft. Belvoir, VA 22060. He is survived by his nephew William Beaudoin (Mary), his niece Mary Ann Sherman and her children David Sherman (Chrissy) of Swainsboro, GA, Dan Sherman of East Greenbush, NY and Kathy Beardsley (Sam) of East Greenbush, NY, great niece Kathleen Beaudoin, great great nephew Dylan Beardsley, great great nieces Emily and Grace Beardsley, and Sara and Harper Sherman. A visitation was held at DEMAINE FUNERAL HOME, 520 S. Washington St., Alexandria, VA 22314 on September 23, 2017. A mass of Christian Burial was offered on January 29, 2018 at Ft. Myer Old Post Chapel with interment at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.

January February 2018, Page 7 2nd Annual Simbang Gabi Mass and 4th Degree Honor Guard at St. Louis Potomac Assembly 2204 was invited to provide an Honor Guard for the Filipino-American Ministry of St. Louis Church for the traditional Filipino novena Mass which is a preparation for Christmas: Simbang Gabi. Thursday Dec. 21, 7pm. This is novena consisting of 9 consecutive Masses leading up to Christmas. Each Mass is held in a different parish. We were privileged to be able to provide the Honor Guard for the Mass at St. Louis and invited to the dinner afterwards. The St. Bernadette choir provided the music and they did a tremendous job. It was a truly inspirational Mass. The traditional meal afterwards was excellent. Members of the Honor Guard were:: SK Paul Kayanan, FN SK Buck Coates, FPN SK Fred Beata, PFN SK Nate Murray, SK Kerry McCabe, SK Michael McCabe, SK Richard Dunbar, and SK Maurice Chau. Mass to Celebrate the End of 2017, December 31, 2017 Assembly SK and their families gathered at Good Shepherd Catholic Church for the 9am Mass celebrated by the Assembly Friar, Father Baez on December 31. It was an opportunity to close out the year with a special Mass as a family and then have brunch together afterwards. We all moved from Good Shepherd to Murphy s Irish Pub in Old Town Alexandria for the Champaign brunch. Murphy s did an excellent job. We ordered off the menu and the brunch was very inexpensive, the food was great, and the service excellent. They had a big fire going in the fireplace and the room was well organized. The many servers got our food out quickly and everyone had a great time. Even parking was not a problem. This is an event we should schedule every year. Renewal of Obligations, January 22, 2018 The Worthy Associate District Marshal, Al Grimmig, was the conferring officer for our Renewal of Obligations on January 22. It was a very moving ceremony. Each of the principal officers led a renewal of the vows we have taken in each of the three degrees ending with the Faithful Navigator leading the 4th Degree vow. It reminded us all of what we have promised to do, how we have sworn to lead our lives, and how we will support our Assembly, Church, and country. ADM Grimmig did an excellent job of moving us through the ceremony and he was ably assisted by PFN PGK Nate Murray, Sr. We followed the ceremony by joining our wives and significant others for a pot luck dinner. The bar was open and we had a really nice time. Thanks to ADM Grimmig for providing the leadership and guidance for this meaningful ceremony.

January February 2018, Page 11 Faithful Navigator s Comments Brother Sir Knights, I hope you had a spiritually rewarding and happy Christmas and enjoyed the many Church activities and time with your families. May the New Year bring nothing but happiness and prosperity. The Assembly plans on a very active year. We start with our Renewal of Obligations on Monday, 22 February. We have been told that SK are to wear the new uniform or a dark suit, dark tie, white shirt (not button down, no French cuffs), black shoes, and your Social Baldric. Wives and significant others are invited and will wait in the lounge during our renewal. Afterwards we will share a Pot Luck dinner. This is a significant opportunity to retake the vows you have already made in each of the degrees. Please try and be there. Coming up we have a Senator sponsored tour of the Capital (depending on the Government being open). This offers a wonderful opportunity to get an insider s view of our government at work. Please see the sign up for the details. After that, we have the George Washington Parade and Saint Patrick s Day Parade in Alexandria. These are a great opportunity to wear either the new uniform or the traditional full regalia. (As you know, the traditional regalia has been extended until the end of June, 2019.) We are also going to try and increase participation in the Ride to Recovery. That is a great time to spend a day riding with our Warriors or to help with one of the meals or camp sites. Details on these events are forthcoming. We would also like to participate in supporting an Honor Flight. PGK Larry Clark is getting the details and will have them at the February meeting. One other suggestion is to hold a destruction of old, worn out, US flags. If you have knowledge of how this is properly done, please step up and help us get it organized. On February 24, we will be supporting the Northern Virginia Polar Plunge for the Special Olympics. If you want to join the team, please contact Larry Clark. If you want to just donate, here is the link: https:// impact.specialolympicsva.org/give/t139382/#!/donation/checkout. In the search for a specific individual fundraiser, you can enter B or L or T in the search box and that will bring up the names of individuals participating.
