Grapevine Pastor's Desk 2014 Brothers and Sisters in Christ, You are entering into an amazing time in the life of your congregation and I am thrilled to be making that journey with you. Your leadership teams have been working with a wonderful mix of high energy and careful consideration to find someone to serve your church as Transitional Pastor. I am humbly honored by the opportunity to serve the people of Fredericktown First Presbyterian. We will get to know one another as you define the direction of this ministry and become the best church that you can be in the community where you are. I will be ending my time at McArthur Presbyterian on September 30 th and I will arrive at your church on 1. Dee has been just wonderful as she is putting all of the behind the scenes pieces into place to make my arrival in the office smooth. As Art explained last month, I am moving back to the area. Since this is a transitional and part-time term, I do not plan to move right into town. I am, however, seeking a new home base very near the church. It will be a busy time as I try to maintain and sell my home in Vinton County, Ohio. I am stepping out in faith and I know that the Lord has my service to your church as a top priority! Once I arrive, you will find me in the church, at the office. I plan to spend time in and around the church and community from Thursday through Sunday, as well as Monday mornings. (I will announce the hours later.) I will be doing all of the normal pastor things, sermon preparation, worship services, etc., AND I will be getting to know you, the congregation. We will be exploring your history and the stories that have made you who you are. We will be looking for ways that First Presbyterian can touch the community and share the rich heritage of that history. I look forward to your input and collaboration as we work together. I do like to have fun, so there will be lots of that along the way. The Lord told us to make a joyful noise. Let s be noisy in the process! We will celebrate World Communion Sunday on 5 th and I am excited to share that special worship service as my first Sunday in the service of Fredericktown First. I hope to see each and every one of you on the 5 th. Knight The Master s Way Not ours to know the reason Why unanswered is our prayer; But ours to wait for God s own time To lift the cross we bear. Not ours to know the reason Why from loved ones we must part, But ours to live in faith and hope, Though bleeding to the heart. Not ours to know the reason Why this anguish, strife, and pain, But ours to know a crown of thorns Sweet graces for us gain. A cross, a bleeding heart, and crown What greater gifts are given? Be still, my heart, and murmur not: These are the keys to heaven. Barbara Hall and Susan Cunningham World Communion Sunday 5th World Communion Sunday is a celebration observed by several Christian denominations, taking place on the first Sunday of every, that promotes Christian unity and ecumenical cooperation. [1] The tradition originated in the Shadyside Presbyterian Church in 1933, [2] was adopted throughout the US Presbyterian Church in 1936, [1] and subsequently spread to other denominations. In 1940, the Federal Council of Churches (now the National Council of Churches), led by Jesse Moren Bader, endorsed World Communion Sunday and began to promote it to Christian churches worldwide. [1]

Page 8 Why do details sometimes differ from one Gospel account to another? Mark 1:12 13 Mark omits many details that Matthew and Luke include in their accounts of Jesus temptation. Just as various witnesses have individual perspectives on an event, the Gospel writers draw on their own backgrounds and write from their own viewpoints for their particular audience. Of greater concern than the amount of coverage are the apparent discrepancies in the accounts themselves. For instance, Matthew and Luke seem to rearrange the sequence of these events. Matthew says Jesus was tempted: (1) to turn stones into bread; (2) to leap from the temple; and (3) to worship the devil so all the kingdoms of the world would be given to him. Luke changes the order of the second and third temptation. Ancient cultures did not feel compelled to relate events in chronological sequence. Some think Matthew may have listed the temptations in chronological order while Luke listed them in order of significance. Though the details vary according to individual Gospel writers, the essence of the information is consistent. There is no real contradiction between these accounts. Interchurch It s and you all are getting ready for Fall and Halloween but at Interchurch we are getting ready for Christmas. Turn the Tide applications will start 14 th and run through November 14 th. This year I am asking that your FACA representative contact me at Interchurch for an appointment to get the names for their church; I prefer not to give names out during the FACA meeting. Names will be available starting November 20 th and distribution will December 18 th. We are also requesting food donations to help fill the Christmas baskets for the client s Christmas dinner. Items such as boxed stuffing mix, canned sweet potatoes, cherry and apple pie filling and pie crusts, and corn muffin mix are needed as well as monetary donations to use towards purchasing ham and turkeys. As always, please remember to donate your gently used and/or new clothing and household items to Interchurch. Also stop in and browse through the Thrift Store; purchasing items at the Thrift Store is a major contribution to our budget. Your dollars provide food, financial aid, clothing assistance, medical assistance to those in need as well as providing Christmas gifts through Turn the Tide. Katie Frazier - Branch Manager 69 N.
