Introduction Mark 16:16 Into What Were You Baptized? 1. Have you been baptized? 2. Do you feel it is necessary to be baptized in order to be saved? 3. If you have been baptized, into what were you baptized? 4. Were you baptized in order to receive the forgiveness of sins? 5. This morning we re going to look at a very basic principle of the Word of God and that is the subject of Baptism. A first principle Heb 5:12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the first principles of the oracles of God; and you have come to need milk and not solid food. A. Many in the world today that have been baptized, don t understand what they were baptized into. 1) Do you understand what you were baptized into? 6. Does it make any difference why we are baptized? Yes it does! A. Did we get baptized to fulfill the Word of God, acting out of total obedience from our heart, understanding into what we were being baptized? 7. Let s look at this subject of Baptism so that we can fully understand into what we are baptized. Into What Were You Baptized? 1

Baptism into Christ 1. In Galatians 3:27 the apostle Paul wrote: Gal 3:27 For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. A. We cannot get INTO Christ except through baptism. That is the only door that leads into our Savior! 1) We can only gain salvation if we are IN Christ. The door that opens our way unto salvation is baptism because to get IN Christ we MUST be baptized. 2 Tim 2:10 Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. 2) We can only gain the forgiveness of sins through His blood. To be in contact with His blood we must get IN Him. Col 1:14 in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins. 3) Our Spiritual Blessings will only come about once we are IN Christ. Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, Into What Were You Baptized? 2

Baptism into Body 1. It is through baptism that we are baptized INTO Christ s Body! There is no other way that you can find in the scriptures that we can get INTO the body of Christ except through the door of baptism. 1 Cor 12:12 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body... A. The only one s that can have their sins forgiven are those that are baptized INTO the body of Christ. He only will forgive those that come INTO His body. 1 Peter 2:24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed. B. We learn from the inspired apostle Paul that we can only be reconciled to God (brought to God) through the body of Christ. How do we get INTO His body? BAPTISM! Ephesians 2:15-16 C. Christ will only save those that are in His Body, those that are IN the church. 1) The church IS His body; He is the head of the church. Therefore, one can only get INTO the church when one is IN His Body. That is only through the door of baptism! Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. Eph 5:23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Acts 2:47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved. Acts 2:41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. Into What Were You Baptized? 3

Baptism into Death 1. We cannot be in contact with the Death of Jesus except through baptism. Again Baptism is the door that leads us INTO the Death of Jesus. Rom 6:3-4 Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. A. We can only be reconciled to God by the death of Jesus. How do we get INTO His death? Only through Baptism! Rom 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. Col 1:21-22 And you, who once were alienated and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now He has reconciled in the body of His flesh through death, to present you holy, and blameless, and above reproach in His sight-- Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. 2. We can see from the following charts that it is essential to become baptized into Christ in order to be in His body, the church, and in order to come into contact with his blood the death of Christ. A. The Gospel enacted B. The Gospel re-enacted Into What Were You Baptized? 4

Baptism into Name 1. When one is baptized, one is baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Were you baptized IN the name of these three? Matt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, A. Salvation is not found in any other name. We must be baptized in their name. Acts 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." B. It is only through Christ s name that we can have remission of sins. Acts 10:43 To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins." C. When we believe in Christ we ll want to wear the name Christian. It is only through the door of baptism that we can wear the name Christian! Acts 11:26 And when he had found him, he brought him to Antioch. So it was that for a whole year they assembled with the church and taught a great many people. And the disciples were first called Christians in Antioch. Into What Were You Baptized? 5

Conclusion 1. You see, that there is only ONE Baptism. It is only in that ONE Baptism that you can gain eternal salvation. A. Into CHRIST; BODY; DEATH; NAME 2. We need to fully understand the following: A. IF --- when Baptized, YOU: 1) Put on Christ (Gal 3:27) 2) Have Your Sins Washed Away (Acts 22:16) 3) Have Remission (Forgiveness) of Sins (Acts 2:38) 4) Are Made Free From Sin (Rom 6:17-18) 5) Made to Benefit By Jesus Death (Rom 6:3-4) 6) Enter the Body of Christ (1 Cor 12:13) 7) Wear the name of Christ (Acts 11:26) 8) Receive All The Spiritual Blessings (Eph 1:3) **Understanding: 1 Peter 3:21 The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God,) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ: B. THEN --- What Is Your Condition WITHOUT Baptism? Matthew 7:21 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9 Heb 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him, Into What Were You Baptized? 6
