Tuesday, June 4 Arrival Upon arrival at Rome's Leonardo da Vinci international airport a private motorcoach will meet us and bring us directly to our hotel the Guest-house Santa Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci, a lovely threestar hotel located just next to St. Peter s. We will check-in and then have lunch together. We'll then have Mass in the nearby church of Santa Maria delle Grazie alle Fornaci. After Mass we will visit St. Peter's Square and St. Peter's Basilica as a group. We'll then enjoy an early dinner before heading back to the hotel to catch up on sleep. Lunch: Catered to hotel Dinner: La Frusta Wednesday, June 5 The Holy Father & the Holy Relics Friday, June 7 Underground Rome and the Ancient City Our day begins with an Audience with the Holy Father! We will then catch a bus over to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major where we will have Mass in the Sistine Chapel at the Altar of Pope St. Pius V. Following Mass we will embark on the Holy Relics tour, a walking tour on which we will venerate some of the holiest relics of all of Christendom. Churches on this tour include the Major Basilica of St. Mary Major, the Basilica of Santa Prassede, the church of the Santissimo Redentore e Sant'Alfonso, the Major Basilica of St. John Lateran, the Holy Stairs and the Major Basilica of Holy Cross in Jerusalem. Today we will enjoy a comprehensive visit of the ancient city center. We'll begin underground, with the subterranean houses underneath the Basilica of Sts. John and Paul on the Caelian Hill and the crypt below the church of San Clemente adjacent the Colosseum. (Mass will be celebrated in the church of Sts. John and Paul). In the afternoon we will then explore the Colosseum and Roman Forum. Lunch: Rigatoni Dinner: Frusta Thursday, June 6 Underground Rome Today will begin with the Scavi Tour, an underground tour that will take us deep beneath St. Peter's Basilica and to the tomb of St. Peter! This will be followed by a visit to St. Paul Outside the Walls where we will have Mass near the tomb of St. Paul. We'll also visit the site of St. Paul's martyrdom at Tre Fontane and finally finish our day with a subterranean tour of the Catacombs of St. Sebastian. Lunch: La Frusta Dinner: Cecilia Metella Lunch: Luzzi Dinner: La Frusta Saturday, June 8 Trastevere Today we will visit the great ancient quarter of Rome that is across the Tiber, namely, Trastevere. Before exploring its many churches and piazzas we will climb to the top of the Gianicolo where we will visit the North American College and celebrate Mass. From there we will descend in Trastevere and visit the churches of St. Cecilia, St. Chrysogonus and St Mary s in Trastevere. After lunch we will make our way to the Tiber Island to visit the Church of St. Bartholomew and then up the Aventine hill for a visit to Santa Sabina and Sant Anselmo. Sunday, June 9 Papal Angelus & Counter Reformation & the Baroque Today we will enjoy a comprehensive guided tour of the churches, piazzas and temples of the Campus Martius, the ancient Field of Mars (including but not limited to Santa Maria Sopra Minerva, the Pantheon and the Piazza Navona). This tour will take an in depth look into the Counter Reformation, exploring the lives of St. Philip Neri and St. Ignatius of Loyola. Along the way we will have Mass at the tomb of St. Monica in the church of St. Augustine, as well as visit the churches of the Gesu', Sant'Ignazio, Sant'Agnese and San Luigi Francese (which houses some of the most moving works of art of all time: the St. Matthew Cycle by Caravaggio). Our day will conclude with evening visits to the Trevi Fountain and the Spanish Steps. Lunch - On your own - 15 euro provided Dinner - Abruzzi Monday, June 10 Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel Today we will enjoy a free morning in Rome. Then in the afternoon we will explore one of the finest museums in the world, the Vatican Museums. On this tour our guide will unravel for us some of the greatest wonders ever created, sponsored by the Papacy: the Raphael Rooms and the Sistine Chapel! Our day will conclude with a group visit high above Rome to the cupola of St. Peter's Basilica! Lunch - Maria's (Ristorante dei Musei) Dinner - La Frusta Tuesday, June 11 Assisi & Orvieto Today we depart on a private motor-coach for Assisi. On the way there we will stop in the beautiful city of Orvieto, home to one of Italy's finest Gothic cathedrals, the Duomo of Orvieto, which serves as a solemn reliquary for the Eucharistic Miracle of Bolsena, the first Church-approved Eucharistic miracle and the impetus behind the institution of the Feast of Corpus Christi! After enjoying a tour and lunch in Orvieto we're back on the bus and headed to Assisi. Prior to reaching the actual medieval city center of Assisi we will visit the original home of the Franciscan order and the place of St. Francis death at the Porziunzcola chapel inside the great baroque Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. We will then proceed to Assisi and check-in at the lovely three-star Hotel Pax, located just next to the birthplace and childhood home of St. Francis of Assisi! Lunch - Tipica Trattoria Etrusca Dinner - Assisi - Hotel Pax Wednesday, June 12 Assisi Today we will visit the tomb of St. Francis and then attend Mass in the Basilica built over his tomb. We will then visit the Basilica of St. Claire followed by a visit to her incorrupt body in the crypt below. In the evening we'll climb up to Rocca Maggiore, a medieval castle overlooking the Seraphic City.
