The Express Image of His Person 46 th Annual Old Union Baptist Ministers School 2018 Thursday, March 29 th, 2018. Elder Ronald G. Spurgeon, Pastor of Faith Missionary Baptist Church Nashville, TN Scripture Lesson: Hebrews 1:1 14. Lesson Text: 1:3. Introduction: Please let me preface this subject of The Express Image of His Person by stating there is no possible way a person can convey in 45 minutes the express image of the person of Jesus Christ. It is also very important to understand, we as Ministers/Preachers of the Gospel of Jesus Christ must become more acquainted and familiarize ourselves on a daily basis, with the awesome responsibility of communicating to a lost and dying world the express image of the person of Jesus Christ. My goal is to relay the message God put upon my heart nearly two years ago concerning the express image of His Person, with the HELP and Guidance of the Holy Spirit. Read Hebrews 1: 1 14. The Question before Us Do we as preachers want AN ENRICHED MINISTRY? If so, learn all you can about the Express Image of the Person of Jesus Christ! The Mount of Transfiguration: Matthew 17: 1 8. Let s take a walk with Jesus, up there. The lesson text Hebrews 1:3, as translated by the Amplified Bible: He is the sole expression of the glory of God [the Light-being, the out-raying or radiance of the divine], and He is the perfect imprint and very image of [God s] nature, upholding and maintaining and guiding and propelling the universe by His mighty word of power. When He had by offering Himself accomplished our cleansing of sins and riddance of guilt, He sat down at the right hand of the divine Majesty on high, God s Nature: The character of God is found in the Fruit of the Spirit and is manifested in the Express Image of Jesus Christ! See Galatians 5:22 26. The lesson text Hebrews 1:3, as expounded by A. T. Robertson s Word Pictures of the New Testament: 3. {The effulgence (a flowing out; that which flows or issues from any body or substance. Webster 1828) of His glory} The Greek apaugasma, derived from apaugazo, to emit brightness (cf. 2 Cor. 4:4, 6; Wisdom 7:26). This can mean either a reflection of light, or a light ray from a source, the latter more likely. {The very image of his substance} Character is an old word from charasso, to cut, to scratch, to mark. It was the agent or tool that did the marking, then the mark or impress made the exact reproduction, a meaning clearly expressed by charagma (Acts 17:29; Rev. 13:16). The word occurs in the inscriptions for person as well as for exact reproduction of a person. {Purification of sins} Lit. To cleans; referring to the priestly work of Christ (cf. Matt. 8:3; Heb. 9:14), here the cleansing from sins (cf. also 2 Pet. 1:9; Job 7:210. {Sat down} Lit. Took his seat, a formal and dignified act. {Of the Majesty on high} (cf. Deut. 32:3; 2 Sam. 7:23, Ps. 93:4 and Heb. 1:3; 8:1; Jude 25). Christ resumed his original dignity and glory (John 17:5). Jesus is here pictured as King (Prophet and Priest also) Messiah seated at the right hand of God.

Spurgeon 2 Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the Man! (John 19:5) I declare before you today, behold the Express Image of His Person! Express Image: translated as Impressed character, Greek word - charakter. We are moving into the area of the most impressive character of God, revealed to us by His Son (Jesus Christ), with the overwhelming assistance from the Holy Ghost. NOTE THE FIRST WORD IN BOOK OF HEBREWS - God (Greek theos God, a god, object of worship, godly, godly manner, exceeding with reference to God, after a godly sort, closely related to Greek axios which means worthy.) Notice God: who at sundry times (means in many parts) and in divers manners (in many ways or turns) He speaks in Eternity Time Past, Time Present, and Time Future verse 1. 24 Character Subjects of Hebrews Chapter 1, surrounding THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF HIS PERSON: 1. God. Verse 1. 2. Fathers (patriarchs?). Verse 1. 3. Prophets. Verse 1. 4. The Son of God. Verse 2. 5. Worlds made by Him. Verse 2. 6. The Brightness of God s Glory, descriptive of the express image of His Person. Verse 3. 7. Word of His Power. Verse 3. 8. Sinful Man (Our transgressions of God s Law I John 3:4). Verse 3. 9. Majesty on high. Verse 3. 10. Better than Angels. Verse 4. 11. Angels, compared to The Only Begotten Son of God by the Holy Father. Verse 5. 12. Again, Firstbegotten into The World, let ALL Angels of God worship (axios) HIM! Verse 6. 13. Angel Spirits. Verse 7. 14. Ministers (public worker, labourer) a flame of fire for the Gospel. Verse 7. 15. THY THRONE OF GOD. A sceptre of RIGHTEOUSNESS which is the sceptre of HIS Kingdom. Verse 8. 16. God anointed HIM (Jesus Christ the Express Image of God) with the oil of Gladness above thy fellows (partners, holding with others). Verse 9. 17. In the beginning (GOD), laid the foundation of the EARTH with HIS OWN works of His Hands. Verse 10. 18. And, HEAVENS are the works of God s OWN Hands. Verse 10. 19. ALL SHALL PERISH, but THOU shall remain the SAME GLORIOUS GOD! Verse 11. 20. THEY SHALL ALL wax old as a garment. Verse 11. 21. The VESTURE shall be folded, they shall be changed, GOD is the SAME and HIS years shall not fail! Verse 12. 22. Angels will not set on RIGHT Hand of God, ONLY THE SON, as ALL ENEMIES made unto a FOOTSTOOL. Verse 13. 23. Ministering SPIRITS, sent forth to minister THE GOSPEL of Jesus Christ. Verse 14. 24. Finally, THE REDEEMED heirs of THE ETERNAL Salvation (US/WE) who are saved by God s Glorious Grace! Verse 14. It would appear to me the most decorated of importance of these 24 Who being the brightness of His Glory, and the Express Image of His Person! Verse 3.

Spurgeon 3 Those whom have clearly seen Where Christ Sitteth Colossians 3: 1-4: If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory. The Express Image of the Person of Jesus Christ, currently sits on His Throne to Intercede on Our behalf. (see Romans 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself (Himself) maketh intercession (To meet with in behalf of one) for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Romans 8:27 And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession (to meet with, come between) for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:34 Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession (to meet with, come between) for us. Others have seen and lived to tell it in God s Word: 1. Jesus foretells (Prior to Crucifixion): Luke 22:63 71. And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee? And many other things blasphemously spake they against him. And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying, Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe: And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God. Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am. 2. King David wrote a song: Psalms 110:1 5 (A Psalm of David.) The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool. The LORD shall send the rod of thy strength out of Zion: rule thou in the midst of thine enemies. Thy people shall be willing in the day of thy power, in the beauties of holiness from the womb of the morning: thou hast the dew of thy youth. The LORD hath sworn, and will not repent, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek. The Lord at thy right hand shall strike through kings in the day of his wrath. 3. Stephen got a Heavenly Vision: Acts 7:54 60 When they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed on him with their teeth. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up stedfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God, And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. Then they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord, And cast him out of the city, and stoned him: and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge. And when he had said this, he fell asleep. 4. Paul? But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Hebrews 10:12 14.

Spurgeon 4 5. John Mark (Post Crucifixion, After Resurrection, and Prior to Heavenly Ascension): So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God. And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen. Mark 16:19 20. 6. John the Revelator saw in a Heavenly Vision and said: And I saw in the right hand of him that sat on the throne a book written within and on the backside, sealed with seven seals. And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the book, and to loose the seals thereof? And no man in heaven, nor in earth, neither under the earth, was able to open the book, neither to look thereon. And I wept much, because no man was found worthy to open and to read the book, neither to look thereon. And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof. And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth. And he came and took the book out of the right hand of him that sat upon the throne. And when he had taken the book, the four beasts and four and twenty elders fell down before the Lamb, having every one of them harps, and golden vials full of odours, which are the prayers of saints. And they sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy to take the book, and to open the seals thereof: for thou wast slain, and hast redeemed us to God by thy blood out of every kindred, and tongue, and people, and nation; And hast made us unto our God kings and priests: and we shall reign on the earth. And I beheld, and I heard the voice of many angels round about the throne and the beasts and the elders: and the number of them was ten thousand times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands; Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing. And every creature which is in heaven, and on the earth, and under the earth, and such as are in the sea, and all that are in them, heard I saying, Blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, be unto him that sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb for ever and ever. And the four beasts said, Amen. And the four and twenty elders fell down and worshipped him that liveth for ever and ever. Four and Twenty Elders: 1. Revelation 4:4: And round about the throne were four and twenty seats: and upon the seats I saw four and twenty elders sitting, clothed in white raiment; and they had on their heads crowns of gold. 10 11: The four and twenty elders fall down before him that sat on the throne, and worship him that liveth for ever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying, Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created. 2. Revelation 11:16: And the four and twenty elders, which sat before God on their seats, fell upon their faces, and worshipped God, Saying, We give thee thanks, O Lord God Almighty, which art, and wast, and art to come; because thou hast taken to thee thy great power, and hast reigned. 3. Revelation 19:4: And the four and twenty elders and the four beasts fell down and worshipped God that sat on the throne, saying, Amen; Alleluia. A final thought: How well do you (WE) know this person, especially His Divine Character? Please continue to meditate and ponder on the Express Image of His Person, especially when you feel destitute of spiritual and emotional motivation. And always remember My Brothers,

Spurgeon 5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5. Jesus Passed By: (Note: Brother Marvin Dalton wrote Oh What a Savior & Looking For a City ) He wrote three of my most favorite Gospel Songs. JESUS PASSED BY 1953 Copyright There is a story of long ago, Men roamed in darkness no where to go; One day the scene changed, they ceased to cry, There was a reason, Jesus Passed by. One day a sinner, I found relief, Gone was my burden, Gone was my grief; Angels were singing, and so was I, There was a reason, Jesus Passed by. Glory and honor be to the king, Shout Hallelujah, make praises ring; Look to the future home in the sky, There is a reason, Jesus Passed By. WHAT A SAVIOR 1948 Copyright Once I was straying in sin s dark valley, No hope with-in could I see; God sent from heaven a loving Savior, To save a poor lost soul like me. O What a Savior, O Hallelujah, His heart was broken on Calvary; His hands were nail-scarred, His side was riven, He gave His life-blood for even me. LOOKING FOR A CITY 1943 Copyright Looking for a city, Where we ll never die, There the sainted millions, Never say good-by, There we ll meet our Savior, And our loved ones too, Come O Holy Spirit, All our hopes renew.
