SERVICE FOR THE LORD S DAY July 29, 2018 WE GATHER AROUND THE WORD PRELUDE Prelude on YADKINVILLE Marilyn Biery WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS CALL TO WORSHIP The Spirit and the Church say, Come. The people of the Word say, Come. Let everyone who is thirsty come. Receive the gift of the water of life. * HYMN 805 Come Sing to God ELLACOMBE * PRAYER OF CONFESSION Eternal God, in whom we live and move and have our being, whose face is hidden from us by our sins, and whose mercy we forget in the blindness of our hearts: Cleanse us from all our offenses, and deliver us from proud thoughts and vain desires, that with reverent and humble hearts we may draw near to you, confessing our faults, confiding in your grace, and finding in you our refuge and strength; through Jesus Christ your Son. * DECLARATION OF FORGIVENESS Our righteousness is found in Christ alone, a gift of God by faith. Beloved people of God, celebrate the good news: Through the grace of Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Amen. * RESPONSE 591 Halle, Halle, Hallelujah! HALLE, HALLE * SHARING OF CHRIST S PEACE Since God has forgiven us in Christ, we too should forgive one another. Peace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. And also with you. (Exchange signs of Christ s peace with those worshipping with you.) WE HEAR THE WORD PROCLAIMED CHILDREN S MESSAGE PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION 2

SERMON Walking The Steps Between Them and Us Eric Lange * HYMN 515 I Come With Joy DOVE OF PEACE * LITANY FOR THE JOURNEY We are a Spirit-directed community: Led to unfamiliar places, encountering new faces, discovering the Holy Spirit is with us for every step. We are called by God to respond and answer the living God: In every circumstance of life we face, We nurture among us the gifts of the Spirit and speak as prophets to our community proclaiming God s ways, God s love, God s peace. And in the journey we discover our true shared life: We, ourselves, are challenged by the message the Spirit gives us, we are led in new and surprising directions, taking steps that are both thrilling and frightening As we seek to listen and follow the living God. Amen. SHARING CELEBRATIONS AND CONCERNS Microphone Available WE RESPOND TO THE WORD PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen. OFFERING OF THE GIFTS OF THE PEOPLE OFFERTORY Serenity Charles Ives O, Sabbath rest of Galilee! O, calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love. Drop thy still dews of quietness till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. 3

We do this in response to the Grace of God through Jesus Christ, recognizing the truth of the Gospel: There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male or female; for, all of us are one in Jesus Christ. 4
