Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ I want to let you know that I am very excited to return back home to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. The last time when I was here, I was a seminarian from St. Patrick's Seminary doing my pastoral year at St. Thomas Aquinas from July 1, 1997 to June 30, 1998 in the Diocese of San Jose when Fr. Barry Freyne was the pastor. At the time St. Ann's Chapel was still a part of the Parish and Fr. Matt Stanley was a parochial vicar here. It is quite an experience to have most of the memories flashing back to me gradually after 20 years away, but the people here have changed. Fr. Matt Stanley has grey hair instead of blonde hair, and Fr. Barry is no longer here. Please, let me re-introduce myself. My name is Rev. Anthony Tuong Duy Nguyen. I came to the United States on July 31, 1980 as an immigrant from Vietnam. I have seven brothers and three sisters, and most of them live in San Jose. I finished high school, and I then finished a B.A. in psychology at San Diego State University in 1992. I then joined St. Francis Seminary as a pre-theology student for two years studying philosophy, then I went to St. Patrick's Seminary in Menlo Park for theology in 1994 and graduated with a Bachelor of Sacred Theology (S.T.B.) and Master of Divinity in 2000. I was ordained a priest for the Diocese of San Jose in 2000 by Bishop Patrick McGrath, and my first pastor was Fr. Matt when I was assigned as a parochial vicar at the Holy Family Parish in San Jose, and my last assignment was at St. Maria Goretti Parish. I have a brother, Rev. Anthony Tan Nguyen, and he is also a priest for the Diocese of San Jose. Having been a priest in the Diocese of San Jose for 18 years, my hope is to reconnect myself with all of you and to share my gifts and talents with everyone that God sends me. I ask you to remember me in your prayers as I remember you in mine so that I can be an effective instrument of God serving you at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish. May God's Grace and Peace be with you always.............................. Rev. Anthony Nguyen, Parochial Vicar Z z Please Pray For the Sick & Homebound Lydia Li, Cindy Palmer, Donna Riordan, Lucienne Woods, Joseph Crea, Cathy Doerr, Mark LaFlamme, Ruth Murphy, Betsy MacDonald, Jim Adams, Paul McNamara, Marianne Mueller, Winnie McGannon, Judy Woods, Stephen Lee, Nancy Marty, Pat Klein, Joyce Homan, Danute Zakys, Maria Merlitti, Eileen Mitchell, Bishop Rich Garcia, Apolonia Gutierrez For the Recently Deceased James Coghlin, Terry Flynn, Yousri Aclimandos, Douglas MacDonell, Rita O Connor, Corazon Quita, Beth Richards, Trudy MacDonald, Catherine McGilvray, Jim Thalmann, Cornelio Soliman, Florence Connell, Lavelle Seebauer, Kevin Dooney, Sean Dooney, Betty Dole, Carmo Trindade, Anne Baker Dobson, Barbara Stelle, Marcus Rodrigues, Jerry Markovich, Trudi Jones, Jim Bliss, Bill Landgraf, Maria Samotyj, Keith Murray, David Hurley, Ronald Smith Pray For Lists guidelines: Have permission from the person to be listed. The camp is offered Monday through Friday for two weeks. Participants will learn about Daniel and others from the Old Testament through music, movement, drama, and arts & crafts. Children may attend one or both weeks. The cost for this camp is $50 per child per week. Registration forms are available in the vestibule of the churches and on our website. If you would like to help or have questions about this camp, contact Susan at suolsen@dsj.org or in the Pastoral Center at 650-494-2496, ext. 25. Evening of Prayer & Solidarity for Migrant Families In light of the recent developments on the US - Mexico border with families being separated, I am calling all Catholics from our Diocese to join me in an evening of prayer and solidarity for migrant families and immigration reform. This vigil will be held at the Cathedral Basilica of San Jose on Tuesday, July 17th, from 7-8 PM. There will be scripture readings, prayer, songs, and a resource center for ways to act for justice for immigrants. We, as people of faith, are called to put our faith into action. As St. James states, "For just as a body without a spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead." (JAS 2:26) Thus, this evening of prayer and advocacy is a concrete way in which we can all put our faith into action while being in solidarity with our migrant brothers and sisters.... Let us all remember the words addressed to the Israelites on their desert journey: "You shall not oppress a resident alien; you well know how it feels to be an alien, since you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt" (Exodus 23:9). I look forward to being with you on July 17th so that we may lift up our migrant brothers and sisters in communal prayer. Bishop Patrick J. McGrath Thank You From Our Pastor I received six generous offers from qualified parishioners to support the parish volunteering to cover the business manager/bookkeeper position. I accepted the first offer I received and I'm extremely grateful for the support I'm receiving to navigate through this transition. I'm also extremely appreciative for the support I'm receiving from lots of parishioners. Many approach me saying 'Father, anything you need just let me/us know'. I appreciate your patience while I learn about my new role and all that it implies..... Rev. Estanislao Mikalonis, Pastor Home Ministers Needed We are in need of ministers to bring communion to individuals at home and at nursing care facilities. Many of our ministers have retired due to age and health issues. Please consider joining this fulfilling ministry. If interested, please contact Mary Fong at 650-494-1660 or fongmt@hotmail.com

All who are registered prior to the Pancake Breakfast will receive a prize!! (I have twelve winners thus far. Looking to make it a whole lot more!) Pastoral Center Garden Weeding Party Not too many parishioners know that parishioner Arlen Hagan has created and maintained the Pastoral Center Garden (behind at Pastoral Center at 3290 Middlefield Road) since 1994. Arlen is getting ready to retire from this regular work, and the OLR Site Committee has planned a weeding party for Saturday, July 21 between 9:00 a.m. to noon. Come when it is convenient. Possible activities include pruning, weeding, spreading mulch, and disassembling the remainder of the gazebo, which has become an attractive nuisance to local, hanging-out teenagers. Bring your own, labeled-with-your-name, tools (some tools will be available). This may grow into a regular monthly event. Come for the inaugural event! All parishioners welcome!

Welcome new parishioners to St. Thomas Aquinas Parish! We encourage you to register as members of our growing family. Please email your name, address, and phone to Cathy Miller at camiller@dsj.org.
