Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara Welcome speech on the occasion of reception given to Cardinal Fernando Filoni Your Eminence, Cardinal Fernando Filoni, Prefect of the congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, Your Beatitude, George Cardinal Alencherry; Father and Head of the Syro- Malabar Church, Dear Archbishop Anil Couto, Bishops Franco and Barnabas, My dear brother priests, Religious men and women, dear brothers, sisters and beloved children, It s my distinct honor and privilege to welcome you all to this assembly and prayer service, on behalf of the Syro-Malabar Church and in particular of the Eparchy of Faridabad. The chief guest of the day is His Eminence Cardinal Filoni, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. This Vatican Dicastery supervises the whole evangelization activity of the Catholic Church all over the whole world, including India. He has all the Bishops in Africa, almost all in Asia, and Latin America, etc. under his jurisdiction. I was privileged to be his collaborator during his tenure as Apostolic Nuncio in Iraq and Jordan. From there, he was moved to the Philippines and later to the Vatican Secretariat of State, as its Substitute, the so-called Interior Minister. In this capacity, he again became my Superior, myself working that time at the United Nations in New York. Since 2011, His Eminence is the Prefect of the Congregation. He has been for me a competent Superior, concerned brother and a source of inspiration. When my appointment as the first Bishop of Faridabad was published, there was a proposal that His Eminence attend the Episcopal ordination; but due to some protocol procedure, that did not happen. But he had promised me already that time, that when he comes to India, he will see whether such a visit to my diocese is possible. Now it has come true and we are very happy and grateful for your gracious presence amidst us. Your Eminence, In the message that you sent me during my Episcopal ordination, you had emphasized full unity and communion within the same Church and with the other sui iuris Churches is necessary to give a common and convincing witness to the Gospel in the missionary context of the country All the three sui iuris Churches should remain united in faith and proceed with a common mind and spirit, maintaining, however, the particular theological, liturgical, religious and spiritual patrimony of each one, which certainly adds to the beauty of the one and the same Catholic Church. You had instructed me that time to keep an open heart to promote communion with the faithful of other sui iuris Churches and collaborate with them, in living out and fulfilling the common missionary mandate. All these past 8 months, at this initial stage, our thrust has been the same. My Episcopal motto is in fidei communione. To foster communion with the Latin Church here in Delhi and with the other five dioceses and thank God, so far we have been an example of laudable coexistence and remarkable common witnessing. The presence of the pastors of the Metropolitan Archdiocese of Delhi and that of the Malankara Church here is a gesture of this interritual communion. Through our humble efforts in this capital city, we want to experiment and show that a peaceful coexistence between different sui iuris Churches is possible in a pluri-ritual context like India and I hope we can be a model of other migrant Metropolis in India and elsewhere. Without further a do, I cordially welcome you to this programme on behalf of all my priests, religious and laity. Our dear Major Archbishop is the Father and Head of our Church. He has come to Delhi just to welcome Cardinal Filoni and to grace this occasion. Your Eminence, its my great honor to extend a warm welcome to you. Hearty welcome to His Grace, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio to India and Nepal. It is for the first time that His Grace is attending a function in our Eparchy. Welcome Your Grace. I extend cordial welcome to His Grace, Anil Couto; Metropolitan Archbishop of Delhi who is also amidst us for the first time after his recent installation. You are most welcome. I welcome His Excellency, Jacob Mar Barnabas, Apostolic Visitator, Syro Malankara Church and His Excellency, Franko Mulakal Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi to this prayer service. To all of you, dear brothers and sisters, in particular the parish priest and members of the Okhala parish, a hearty welcome. -8-

Major Archbishop Cardinal Mar George Alencherry Message on the occasion of reception given to Cardinal Fernando Filoni Your Eminence, We have great joy to welcome you to this Fatima Matha Parish of the Eparchy of Faridabad. Your visit here shows clearly your concern and solicitude towards our newly established Eparchy of Faridabad. We acknowledge with gratitude the effective steps taken by the Congregation for Evangelization of Peoples of which you are the Prefect for the establishment of this Eparchy. I know for certain your committed service towards all the particular Churches all over the world including those of the Oriental Churches. Your presence and programms at Arogya Matha Shrine, Vailankanni as representative of the Holy Father have given a great impetus and enthusiasm for the people over there and also for the Church in India. With the impending renouncement of the Holy Father the Church is looking forward to the special graces of the Lord regarding the election of the successor of Holy Father Benedict 16th. During these days we the people of God in India are specially united in prayer with the Apostolic See for the guidance of the Lord in the forthcoming events at the Vatican. As Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara has expressed in clear terms both himself and the priests and the religious of the new Eparchy are building up healthy relationships and united lines of action regarding the evangelization and pastoral care of the people in the territory of the new Eparchy. Archbishop Kuriakose is very particular in creating good relations with all his Bishop colleagues of various Diocese in the region. Within the short span of ten months the presence of the Eparchy of Faridabad has created very good impressions among the missionary personnel and people of the Diocese all over here. This example of working with a common goal and spirit of communion which the Syro-Malabar Church had already manifested by the functioning of the Eparchy of Kalyan provides every reason for establishing similar ecclesial jurisdictions of the Syro-Malabar Church in the other great cities of the country where we have large concentration of the Syro-Malabar faithful and even beyond the boundaries of India. I thank your Eminence for your kind visit and the support you give for the mission initiatives fo the Syro-Malabar Church and I promise our prayers, especially the intercession of Mary Mother of God for the success of your apostolate as Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples. Finally I request you to convey our prayerful greetings to the Holy Father as you will be meeting him on one of these days before he steps down from the Holy See of the Vicar of Christ. Thank you very much! -9-

CONGREGATIO PRO GENTIUM EVANGELIZATIONE Message Prefect of Congregation for Evangelization of Peoples Your Beatitude His Eminence Card. George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio, Apostolic Nuncio in India and Nepal, Archbishop Anil J.T. Couto, Metropolitan Archbishop of Delhi, Bishop Jacob Mar Barnabas, Apostolic Visitator of the Malankara Church, Bishop Franco Mulakkal, Auxiliary Bishop of Delhi, My Very Dear Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, Dear Brothers and Sisters, Cardinal Fernando Filoni I am glad to be here with you today, just a few months after the creation of the new Diocese of Faridabad on the 27th May 2012. The Diocese was formed to comprise the territories in and around New Delhi (including the States of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu Kashmir, as well as the civil Districts of Gauthambudhnagar and Ghaziabad of Uttar Pradesh), for the pastoral care of the Syro-Malabar faithful and their activities. It is a historical event in the history of the same Syro-Malabar sui iuris Church, in its two thousand years existence in India. Through this act of the Holy Father, a long cherished desire of the St. Thomas Christians of the Syro-Malabar Church in India is fulfilled. Now you have the complete opportunity to worship and live your faith in the very same tradition in which you were born and brought up. Make use of the responsibility to consolidate your faith and give greater testimony to the Gospels, and also promote the communion within the universal Church. Throughout the years I have come to know personally Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara, the first Bishop of Faridabad, whom I heartily greet. Archbishop Bharanikulangara, the international experience you have gathered during the seventeen years in the Holy See s Diplomatic Service, where you have served in different Apostolic Nunciatures, will surely be of great help to you in structuring the new Diocese and leading it. You have all the qualities needed to guide this Church with zeal, faithfulness and pastoral experience. A new beginning always carries with it excitement, enthusiasm and new interest. But this moment of novelty and enthusiasm must not stop here, it must now be converted into pastoral zeal, in order to heed to what Pope Benedict Sixteenth states in the Apostolic Letter for the Indiction of the Year of Faith, Porta fider: By faith, -10-

the Apostles left everything to follow their Master (cf. Mk 10:28). They believed the words with which he proclaimed the Kingdom of God present and fulfilled in his person (cf. Lk 11:20). They lived in communion of life with Jesus who instructed them with his teaching, leaving them a new rule of life, by which they would be recognized as his disciples after his death (cf. Jn 13: 34-35). By faith, they went out to the whole world, following the command to bring the Gospel to all creation (cf. Mk 16:15) and they fearlessly proclaimed to all the joy of the resurrection, of which they were faithful witnesses (PF 13). As faithful of the new Diocese of Faridabad you have a greater responsibility placed on your shoulders, the new Diocese being within the capital city of a multi-ethnic and multi-religious India. Your Diocese is situated in a strategic zone of the country, where one comes across a concentration of Governmental offices, Embassies, multinational companies, various media stations and all sorts of news agencies. All this pushes you forward to be more prophetic and a catalyst of ull ninety and communion within your sui iuris Church and with other Churches in order to give a common and convincing witness to the Gospel in the missionary context of India. Today, is another special day for the Diocese of Faridabad, as we lay the foundation stone of a new parish church within the new Diocese. The building of a new parish church denotes that there already exists a good sized congregation that is in need of a place of worship. But, although it is very important to have the physical building, the same community must unite more around Jesus Christ, [the] living stone, rejected by human beings but chosen and precious in the sight of God (1 Pt 2, 4), and become like living stones..built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ (1 Pt 2,5). The project of constructing a new church is also a unique opportunity to enter into dialogue and relationship with the various sectors of the social and cultural milieu. I encourage you to use all your talents and capabilities in order to build the new church and deliver it on time to the faithful. I am sure, that the new church will bring about a stronger sense of belonging and a renewed faith, especially during this Year of Faith. I would like to take this august occasion to invite all the Syro-Malabar faithful to intensely live their centuries long ecclesial and spiritual tradition, and to remain always united with their Bishops an Priests, with an open heart to promote communion with the faithful of other Churches sui iuris and collaborate with them, in living and fulfilling the common pastoral commitment to the people. May the prayers of intercession of St. Thomas the Apostle and of St. Alphonsa, the beloved daughter of the Syro-Malabar Church, constantly accompany the Diocese of Faridabad, its Bishop, priests, religious and laity. As a sign of appreciation and memento of my visit to this new Eparchy of Faridabad I would like to offer this chalice to Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangra, to be used for the celebration of Holy Mass in the Diocese. Thank you, -11-

A Big Thank You, Archbishop Vincent Concessao! On the occasion of bidding farewell to His Grace Archbishop Vincent M. Concessao, Metropolitan Archbishop of Delhi, I am pleased to wish him well and thank him for immense good he did in favor of the Syro-Malabar community in and around Delhi and NCR. Even though there were many Syro- Malabar pastoral communities established in Delhi, it was during the tenure of office of Archbishop Vincent that the communities flourished and many new personal parishes were erected. The magnanimity and pastoral solicitude of His Grace facilitated coming of many religious communities as well as lay initiatives of the SMC in this capital. Archbishop firmly believed that the Catholic Church is a communion of different sui iuris Churches and tried to foster communion with all the three Churches in the Indian context. After the establishment of the new diocese in March 2012 and my assuming office on 27th May 2012 as the first Bishop of Faridabad, His Grace has been immensely cooperative and encouraging to me and did everything for a smooth transition. It merits special mention that Archbishop decided to maintain the status quo until further arrangements are mutually made. That facilitated continuing the use of many of the Archdiocesan structures for the celebration of the Syro-Malabar Diocese. Our programs like common monthly recollection of priests of both Dioceses, the proposed jointpastoral letter, etc. would improve mutual relationship and an easy co-existence of two ecclesial entities in this Metropole. On the occasion of retirement from office of the Metropolitan Archbishop Delhi, on behalf of the Diocese of Faridabad and of the Syro-Malabar Church, we wish him good health, long life and peaceful time of retirement. The Diocese of Faridabad will be ever indebted to His Grace for all his contributions for the good of the Syro- Malabar Church will be noted in its annals of history. God bless, Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara First Bishop of Faridabad Diocese -12-

Warm Welcome, Archbishop Anil Couto I met Archbishop-elect Msgr. Anil Couto for the first time during the Regional Bishops Conference held in Chadigarh and Jalandhar. As I was new in the Conference, His Excellency has been very welcoming and fraternal to me. Right from the beginning he has been open and interested in the matters of the Syro-Malabar Church in Delhi and of the newly erected Diocese of Faridabad. On the occasion of the solemn installation of His Grace Archbishop Anil Couto as the Metropolitan Archbishop of Delhi, I am pleased to accord him warm welcome on behalf of the Syro-Malabar community in and around Delhi and NCR. May the Good Lord, the Eternal Pastor guide him in all his endeavors and lead this Church in the capital city to a deeper common witness. Catholic Church being a communion of different sui iuris Churches, the coexistence and mutual collaboration between all the three Churches in the Indian context are of great importance. My episcopal motto, In Fidei Communione underlines this principle of cooperation and common witnessing. I hope the good relationship that existed during Archbishop Vincent will be well maintained and further developed under Archbishop Anil Couto. Especially at the initial stages of the new Diocese an atmosphere conducive for a smooth transition is very important. From the part of the Diocese of Faridabad, we extend our full cooperation and willingness to work together for the common cause. As you are taking charge as the Metropolitan Archbishop Delhi, the Diocese of Faridabad and the Syro-Malabar Church wish you the Almighty s abundant blessings, good health and long life. God bless, Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara First Bishop of Faridabad Diocese Do you want to help the new Diocese? A helping hand to build up necessary infrastructures will be appreciated. God Bless Benedict! Farewell Wishes to the renouncing Pope by the Diocese of Faridabad The name Joseph Ratzinger was familiar to me from the classes of theology in the major seminary, in the 1980 s, though his books were not very often available in English in the Library. Later this great professor of theology in Germany Munich and Tübingen was appointed Prefect of Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith and during my higher studies in Rome, I used to meet the Cardinal on his way to the Holy Office. Serious and soft spoken, but smiling and hearty when greeted, this great personality would walk by. During my diplomatic service to the Holy See, this relationship remained official but personal for my knowledge of German language, which he really appreciated. In fact, it is this German connection that nurtured our relationship. It was during his Pontificated that I was appointed to the UN Mission. When I was at the Holy See Mission to the United Nations in New York, Pope Benedict s historical visit to the UN took place. I was privileged to organize these programmes and host him in the same house where I lived. Naturally, my German knowledge facilitated the contact during this visit. It was Pope Benedict that transferred me to his own country, to the Apostolic Nunciature in Germany - a distinct honor and recognition for a Holy See diplomat to work at the Embassy in the homeland of the Pope! It is the same Pope who appointed me Archbishop and entrusted the pastoral care of the Diocese of Faridabad. He granted me a unique opportunity to take my family for a private audience in Castel Gondolfo, a privilege -17-

given only to Apostolic Nuncios. The time he spent with my mother and family in his private apartment is ever memorable. Now the Pope announced his renouncement from the office of the Bishop of Rome on 11 February 2013. This particular date is significant, because first it is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, which marks the Church's annual World Day of the Sick. For the Vatican insiders, it is Vatican Independence Day: the anniversary of the 1929 Lateran Pacts which made the Holy See a sovereign city-state, with the Roman pontiff as its sovereign Head of State. Thus Pope Benedict XVI became the first Roman pontiff since Celestine V in 1294 to renounce from the Chair of Peter and turned out to be an extraordinary successor to Saint Peter. As per the Code of Canon Law (Canon 332 2) which states that "If it happens that the Roman Pontiff resigns his office, it is required for validity that the resignation is made freely and properly manifested but not that it is accepted by anyone." Pope Benedict XVI has renounced freely and has properly manifested it. As a note here, I should add that the term resignation of the Pope, often used in the secular media is not accurate. Resignation is often something that should be submitted to a Superior authority and that should be accepted for validity. That s often in the political and worldly scenario. But in the case of a Pope or a King, it is renouncement, not resignation. He himself renounces it before God, who gave him this authority and before the Church, whose head he was. Besides, this cannot be compared to fleeing from Rome or abduction, as some corners depict it. As the Holy Father himself underlined, he did so freely after having repeatedly examined his conscience before God.. This shows his highest degree of intellectual honesty and moral uprightness. To take such a decision that took place once in 600 centuries, one needs strong courage and inner strength. As a German Pope was elected, some ironically commented that to lead the Church in troubled times and striking storms protecting it from dangers, we need a true German Shepherd. In fact, in his homily on April 24, 2005, at the Mass and imposition of the pallium at the start of his papacy Pope Benedict said "Pray for me, that I may not flee for fear of the wolves"!!! Is it fleeing Rome due to the troubles inside the Vatican? Is there any pressure on him that made him to this decision? In Pope s own words: I have come to the certainty that my strengths, due to an advanced age, are no longer suited to an adequate exercise of the Petrine ministry. I am well aware that this ministry, due to its essential -18-

spiritual nature, must be carried out not only with words and deeds, but no less with prayer and suffering. It is true, that Pope Benedict had to face various daunting challenges and crucial crises during his Pontificate. The case of dissident Bishop Williamson, the problem of abuse cases, the issue of Vatileaks and disappearance of classified documents from the Vatican and its trial, etc. were some of the problems of the recent times in the Church. On the top of it, some attribute the internal political polarization of Italian-non Italian under currents striking the Papacy. One can clearly say that given the limitations of the Church, these issues were sorted out boldly and uprightly. Pope Benedict XVI was a gentle and dedicated Church man, with a tender heart of a pastor; man of remarkable scholarship and incisive mind of a faithful theologian. The theology professor and renowned author who helped Pope John Paul II in many of his papal documents, as the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, showed more deeply his erudition and expertise through his Encyclicals and Apostolic Letters. In 2005 he published Deus Caritas Est, a treatise on the theological virtue of charity; in 2007 another one on the virtue of hope, which followed in 2009 an Encyclical on the virtue of faith. His writings and interviews as the Roman Pontiff are masterpieces of extraordinary knowledge of church history and tradition. Throughout this papacy he made a clarion call for witnessing to the apostolic faith. He preached with clarity and charity what God has revealed to the world in Christ, a man of great moral courage in decision making, a spiritual leader of prayer and meditation. Benedict was a Pope with intellectual honesty and "prophetic pulse". His famous Regensburg speech and the recent discourse at the German parliament are examples for this. He was not ready for any intellectual compromise, though sometimes, he was branded as conservative and traditional. But his strong position, especially in terms of reform in the Church was that there should be focus on the hermeneutics of continuity than on hermeneutics of reform. He insisted that hermeneutics of reform must be faithful to the authentic traditions of the Church, -19-

but at the same time adequate to the modern times. Pope Benedict XVI was a man of great love and care for the Mother Church. That s why when he realized his limitations to lead the bark of St. Peter, with humility and selflessness he decided to renounce the office of Bishop of Rome. On Ash Wednesday Pope Benedict XVI explained that the reason to renounce the ministry as for the good of the church. His pastoral solicitude for the people of God and his love of the Church were evident throughout his Pontificate. Pope Benedict was a precious gift of God to the Church leads it in peace and firmness of purpose in the trouble times of today. The reactions to the renouncement are mixed: of surprise and sadness, awe and respect. While most of them come up with great respect for the decision and love for the person of Benedict. As Cardinal Angelo Sodano mentioned: We've listened to you with a sense of shock, rather in total disbelief. In your words we noticed the great affection that you have always had for the Holy Church of God, for this Church that you have loved so much. He was a man of ideas and insights; one could see in him a professor than a prophet. As commentators note, John Paul made you cry; Benedict makes you think.' His great legacies will be his focus on evangelization. His initiatives for new evangelization and the declaration of the Year of Faith as well as establishment of a new Vatican Dicastery for new Evangelization will be remembered as part of his legacy. The fevered media speculation and opinion polls are on about the future Pope and a long list of Papabilis is already afoot. They are often ill-informed and obsessed with only a political perspective. The dictum "He who enters the Conclave as 'Pope' exits a cardinal," proves often true. But the procedure of the Conclave is more spiritual. The group of 117 Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church will assemble soon in Conclave to elect the 266th Successor of St. Peter. The College of Cardinals will ensure the impending interregnum of the Holy See. As per UniversiDominiciGregis Rules of Procedure promulgated by Pope John Paul II's 1996 within fifteen to twenty days from vacancy (sedevacante) all Cardinals are called to arrive in the Vatican. Two things envisaged therein are not pertinent this time: the preparations for a papal funeral and the nine days of mourning (Novemdiales,) and prayer for a deceased Pontiff. According to this document, which restricts voting members age to 80, Pope Benedict XVI will not take part in the Conclave for the election of his successor. In the Code of Canon Law and Church there exist no protocols and prerogatives of a retired Pope. However, the provisions for a retired bishop could be applied here as he is the Bishop of Rome. Pope Benedict prefers to move out immediately to the Castel Gandolfo Summer Residence. And later to the monastery of cloistered nuns inside the Vatican. We shall pray to the Supreme Pastor and Eternal Priest to guide the Conclave Fathers who will assemble soon in the Vatican to identify a Supreme Pontiff, leader and spiritual guide for the 1.2 billion-member Church. -20-

Handwritten Magazine is an old idea in this digital world. But it is an incredible idea and a special effort in many ways and has a magnificent effect on children. It helps the children to develop their creativity. We live in a world where computers and internet have a great influence in the daily life as these things think and work for us; but it also destroys our power of imagination. Here the importance of a handwritten magazine comes into picture. This idea not only forces children to prepare articles without the help of Google brain and computer but also help present them more attractive manner. Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara Bishop of Faridabad My dear priests, religious and people of God, The informal pastoral visits to the parishes which I started in June 2012 is drawing towards the end. After the announcement of the creation of the new Eparchy of Faridabad on 6 March 2012 and my appointment as the first Bishop, I have been keenly studying the background and history of the Delhi Syro-Malabar Mission and its present pastoral programmes. The more I turned the pages of its history, the more I was inspired by the selfless service of its pioneers, altruistic commitment of its priests and religious and the ecclesial interest of our lay faithful. My being OUT for 25 years made me more aware that I should really get IN to the pastoral reality of the priests and people of God entrusted to me. Day by day, I was convinced that in order to render more effectively my Episcopal ministry, I should know better the parishes and people here. It is with this objective in mind that we planned the informal visits to the parishes. As a preparatory step, we gave shape to a detailed questionnaire with a view to collect basic data of the parish and parishioners. It had five major sections: Spiritual, pastoral, statistical and financial. I addition the questionnaire included suggestions future plans, status of parish documents and personal details of the parish priests. Sufficient room was left therein for adding further information about each parish. I am happy that all the priests took this initiative very seriously and furnished every data with utmost care. The format of the informal meeting was an initial prayer or Mass, reports, introduction of the diocese by the Bishop and interaction with the members followed by an Agape. As instructed by the Curia, the composition of the assembly was all the members of the Parish Council, representative / Headmaster-mistress of the Catechism classes, office bearers of DSYM, Mathrujyothi, Vincent de Paul Society and other pious associations in the Informal Pastoral Visits over Thank you! parish. In some parishes more members were present to receive me. Often I was accompanied by Very Rev. Msgr. Sebastian Vadakumpadan, Vicar General. I am impressed by the quality of the reports prepared and the keen interest of the Parish Council and other representatives to know more about the policy of the new diocese. I am grateful to the parish priests who coordinated this initiative and prepared well in the parish level. For me personally, such informal visits offered great opportunity to know deeper each parish. With this basic knowledge, we can now go forward and initiate to form a diocesan pastoral Master Plan. Though the initial idea was to make the informal visit before attending a formal act in a parish, due to time constraints we were obliged to make in some parishes the informals after a formal function. Within these eight months, I have visited almost all the parishes in an average of two times. It is true that these visits were brief and I could not spend more time in each parish. Besides, I met with only representatives of different sections. In the future, we will chart out official Pastoral visit of the bishop to each parish, which lasts for one or more days in each parish. Usually, it is a formal act, during which the state of parish office documents will be verified, financial status will be assessed and the general situation of a parish will be evaluated. Besides, as a preparation for that, a visit of the Vicar General or Pro-Vicar General together with the Chancellor / Procurator is also in the planning. As has been pointed out, we have to strengthen the relationship with the Diocesan Center and together we should grow and strive for a common witnessing. Once again thank you for your cooperation and wish you all the best. God Bless You! Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara First Bishop of Faridabad -26-

^cozm_mzv cq]x CShI hmà IÄ St. Jude s Parish, Sahibabad The Syro Malabar Catholics living in Sahibabad area form a small but closelyknit community of believers. His Grace Archbishop Mar Kuriakose Bharanikulangara raised this community to the status of a parish on his apostolic visit on 3rd February, 2013. The patron of the new parish is St. Jude, and it will be known as St. Jude s Parish, Sahibabad. His Grace appointed Fr. Dominic Kachappilly as the first Vicar of the new parish. Soon after his appointment, Fr. Dominic took the oath of office to safeguard the church and the faithful, and the keys of the church were handed over to him. It was a golden moment for the community, a new experience for us believers to witness the birth of a parish and at the same time be part of it too. Six months ago, when our community was in a disorderly state with no proper direction and leadership, Fr. Dominic Kachappilly was entrusted with the task of gathering and leading us, who embarked on his mission in August 2012. Losing no time, he started working tirelessly and resolutely towards achieving the goal, and quickly won the love and respect of his parishioners. He has the dedicated parishioners by his side all the way, who are ready to go to any length to help accomplish the mission. The Blessing of the Foundation Stone The faithful of this Parish were greatly privileged to have His Eminence Cardinal Fernando Filoni who blessed the Foundation Stone of our proposed church in the presence of His Eminence Cardinal George Alencherry, Head of Syro Malabar Church, Archbishop His Grace Salvatore Pinnacchio, (Apostolic Nuncio to India & Nepal), Archbishop Kuriakose Bharanikulangara (Bishop of Faridabad Diocese huge crowd of Priests, Religious and the faithful from various parts of the country on 14/02/2013 at Fatima Matha Parish, Okhla. Holy Mass and the Sacraments During the Holy Mass, 13 children received the First Holy Communion. The Sacrament of Confirmation was administered to 38 children in all. The children had undergone month-long rigorous preparations to receive the Holy Sacraments. They were meticulously taught about the Christian faith and were made to learn all the prayers. Parents were pleasantly surprised to see the children making small sacrifices in order to be ready to receive Jesus. DSYM Within the short span of time, we have been fortunate enough to build a very active DSYM unit, thanks to the enthusiasm of the young members of our community. Last month they collected winter clothes for the AIDS patients in Najafgarh looked after by the MST Fathers, an initiative that will orient their commitments towards social and charitable causes. Fr. Denny Kattayil, DSYM Director at Faridabad Diocese, made a visit to our unit on 20th Jan, 2013, instilling the youthful minds with verve and kindly spirit. -29-
