One comes from the General Assembly and the other out of the HeartPaths program. I believe both are useful and powerful in their own way for the health and future growth of the church and its members. The theme for the General Assembly this year was Tell It! It comes from Deuteronomy 6:7 where Moses was instructing the Israelites to tell their children (and future generations) the story of God s redeeming work which brought them out of Egypt and into the Promised Land. Most of the Assembly was geared toward helping assembly goers and their respective congregations consider the changing needs and concerns of our society and culture and what it will mean for us to engage these shifts in meaningful ways with our ministry and mission. The challenge was for all of us to tell our faith story through our mission and ministry with renewed vitality. There were many witness moments shared by congregations who are transforming their outlook and programming to meet specific needs in their communities and in doing so were finding themselves revitalized from declining congregations to growing congregations. A frequent thread shared by many of these congregations was trying to find a specific need or interest in their community to target their ministry around. One congregation developed an arts program to coincide with a nearby arts district in their community. Another one found their target to be a safe haven for children living on the streets. One congregation adopted a school to support in a broader fashion than what we do with our Back-to- School-Bash school supplies. The stories were varied but similar. Congregations had grown stale doing what they had done for years and were experiencing decline. It took reinvesting in a community need or cause to turn them around and bring energy back into their ministry. While I believe we are on an upswing here at CCC, my question for us is, Is there a needed ministry around us that we have not seen that we need to invest ourselves in? We have a history of being on the front of many of our community action groups like Network of Community Ministries, Richardson Habitat and The Hunger Pantry. Is there a need out there where we could further use our building, for community visibility and as another way for us to tell our story through witness and service? The second direction or invitation I am sensing is to encourage us to make time and space for sharing our experiences with, and around, God in our everyday life. So often in church we talk about God or discuss what we believe about God, but we rarely make room to share how we personally experience God through the week. That kind of sharing is highly sensitive for most of us and usually only done when we feel it is safe to do so. The Heart- Paths program has, as part of its process, a time of witnessing that uses some good ground rules and guidelines to help their small groups share their experiences with a high level of trust that I believe would be helpful for us as well. Dear Friends I believe that we all understand that God is working through us here at CCC. Yet one of the underlying parts of our witness, that we don t share, is how God and God s spirit is experienced by us individually through the week. Would it strengthen your story to learn about your neighbor in the pew s experience with God or to hear that they might be listening and waiting for some movement or discernment from God? How might your own story change to learn that your dear friend is experiencing a long dry spell from any experience with God? We are and have been a congregation with a strong fellowship bond. Would being able to share our personal experiences of God s presence deepen that fellowship or possibly make it stronger? As I said at the beginning of this article, I am in a discernment mode myself about these two possibilities. I see that both could be very useful for us and that both have their risks. I am seeking your input on this and could share further information with you if you would like. Please keep this in your own prayers and visit with me some time soon.
