August 17, 2014 Month of the Immaculate Heart of Mary 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time Save the Christians of Iraq! The whole world has witnessed with incredulity what is now called The Restoration of the Caliphate (Pontifical Council for Interreligious Dialogue). The Christians of Iraq, together with Shi ites and the Yezidi, are being forced to choose death or exile in those areas of Iraq under the control of the jihadist group Islamic State (ISIS). Their places of worship, convents, monasteries and cemeteries are being desecrated and destroyed; men crucified; women and girls abducted as the spoils of war ; priests and religious murdered. 4 Things You Can Do Now! Pray Sunday, August 17 is a Day of Prayer for Peace in Iraq. Use and reflect on the prayer provided by the Chaldean Catholic Patriarch of Iraq Fast and Sacrifice Follow the traditional Christian practice modeled by Jesus of joining your prayer with a fast or personal sacrifice. Pope Francis reminds us constantly of the power of prayer to change the world. Learn and Give Catholic Relief Services is working with Caritas Iraq to supply aid now and in the months ahead to the Iraqi refugees. Find out more and donate online at emergencies.crs.org. A Faith Journey RCIA is the journey of adult people who choose to look to the Roman Catholic religion for community and spiritual guidance in their personal lives. Most of us know that growing in spiritual insight and maturity is both challenging and reassuring. At the same time we look for spiritual support and friendship from companions along the way. In a comprehensive process called the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), the Church today supports and encourages the spiritual journeys of all of us. The RCIA is an ongoing four step process within parish life. It is designed to welcome new members into the Church and at the same time to lead every Catholic parishioner to deeper belief and renewal of his or her Christian faith. As Catholics, we believe that personal faith in Jesus Christ and in the Church is always a gift a gift from God offered to an individual who is searching for the truth about life and is open to God s initiative and loving invitation. But genuine openness takes time. Accepting Jesus way of life demands a conversion of heart, a turning away from self centeredness to selflessness not just once, but many times throughout our lives. Following Jesus means a willingness to live as He lived, and even to die, if need be, for Him. Conversion in Jesus Christ means that we wholeheartedly seek to do everything in our power to hasten the day when Gospel peace and justice will prevail. Jesus mission becomes our mission. I realized I had grown educationally and socially in life, but something was missing God. So I got into the RCIA and have found the spiritual guidance and growth I was looking for. The discussions force me to look deep within myself to draw strong conclusions. And I see those around me growing spiritually too. -Hiro Hamaguchi, catechumen From RCIA- Journey in Faith
