FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 2, 2018 Lighting of the First Advent Candle The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. On this first Sunday of Advent, we begin our preparations for celebrating Christ s birth. We are part of the community of faith that began with the relationship between God and the Hebrew people. This bond of love continues in the fellowship of Christ s Church. We light this candle to announce the coming of the light of Christ into our darkness. With the coming of this light there is HOPE. The light of Christ shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it. With the coming of this HOPE there is light for us and for our world. Procession into the Church/Praise and Worship Ministry of the Word of God The Acclamation Surely the Lord is coming soon, Amen. Come Lord Jesus! The Collect for Purity & Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. 2

The Summary of the Law Hear what our Lord Jesus Christ says: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40 Kyrie Lord, have mercy upon us. Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us. The Collect of the Day The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The Lessons Old Testament (Sit) Zechariah 14:3-9 Reader A reading from Zechariah. 3 Then the LORD will go out and fight against those nations as when he fights on a day of battle. 4 On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward. 3

5 And you shall flee to the valley of my mountains, for the valley of the mountains shall reach to Azal. And you shall flee as you fled from the earthquake in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the LORD my God will come, and all the holy ones with him. 6 On that day there shall be no light, cold, or frost. 7 And there shall be a unique day, which is known to the LORD, neither day nor night, but at evening time there shall be light. 8 On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter. 9 And the LORD will be king over all the earth. On that day the LORD will be one and his name one. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Silence for meditation on the scripture.) Psalm 50:1-6 1 The Mighty One, God the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God shines forth. 3 Our God comes; he does not keep silence; before him is a devouring fire, around him a mighty tempest. 4 He calls to the heavens above and to the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 Gather to me my faithful ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice! 6 The heavens declare his righteousness, for God himself is judge! Selah Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. (Silence for meditation on the scripture.) 4

New Testament (Sit) 1 Thessalonians 3:6-13 Reader A Reading from First Thessalonians. 6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and has brought us the good news of your faith and love and reported that you always remember us kindly and long to see us, as we long to see you 7 for this reason, brothers, in all our distress and affliction we have been comforted about you through your faith. 8 For now we live, if you are standing fast in the Lord. 9 For what thanksgiving can we return to God for you, for all the joy that we feel for your sake before our God, 10 as we pray most earnestly night and day that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith? 11 Now may our God and Father himself, and our Lord Jesus, direct our way to you, 12 and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you, 13 so that he may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before out God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Reader The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Silence for meditation on the scripture.) Gospel Hymn Holy Gospel Luke 21:25-33 Deacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. 25 And there will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth distress of nations in perplexity because of the roaring of the sea and the waves, 26 people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world. For the powers of the heavens will be shaken. 27 And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great 5

glory. 28 Now when these things begin to take place, straighten up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. 29 And he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree, and all the trees. 30 As soon as they come out in leaf, you see for yourselves and know that the summer is already near. 31 So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. 32 Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all has taken place. 33 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. (Children, 4 years old through 6 th grade, please come to the Altar for a Children s Church blessing.) Gospel Hymn The Sermon (Sit) Nicene Creed Let us confess our faith in the words of the Nicene Creed: & We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. 6

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, hear our prayer. For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God. Lord, in your mercy. For our archbishop, Foley Beach; for our bishop, Bill Atwood; for all the clergy and people of our diocese, especially this week, St. Mattias Eglise Anglicane in Leogane, Haiti, and for all the clergy and people of our congregation. Lord, in your mercy. For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad, and for all who teach and disciple others, including our missionaries, especially this week: Susan Meeder, Haiti Ministry. Lord, in your mercy. Together, let us pray: Lord, your Word teaches us that when we give, you will open the windows of heaven and pour down a blessing until there is no need. We ask you to help each of us to meet the financial needs of this church. Lord, in your mercy. 7

For our brothers and sisters in Christ worldwide who are persecuted for their faith. Help us to pray that they may sense God s presence and comfort; see God open doors to evangelism so they may boldly share the gospel; mature in their faith and be granted wisdom in covert ministry work; remain joyful amid suffering; and forgive and love their persecutors. Lord, in your mercy. For our nation, for those in authority and for all in public service, for those in the US military, and for all first responders: police officers, fire fighters, and medical personnel. Lord, in your mercy: For all the blessings of this life, let us pray to the Lord. We invite your thanksgivings at this time (people may share here) Lord in your mercy. For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity, let us pray to the Lord. We invite your petitions at this time (people may share here) Lord, in your mercy. For all those who have departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray. Lord, in your mercy. Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. 8

The Confession and Absolution of Sin Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. Silence; people sit or kneel & Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The Comfortable Words The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. 1 Timothy 1:15 If you are celebrating a December birthday and/or anniversary, please stand where you are for a blessing. Prayer of Blessing The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you, and be gracious to you; the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace. Amen. Ministry of the Sacrament 9

Offertory Anthem (Sit) Ensemble (Food offerings may be brought to the front of the Church.) Doxology The Sursum Corda ACNA Renewed Ancient Text The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks 10

to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life, that when he shall come again in power and great glory to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who forever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name: The Sanctus and The Prayer of Consecration (Kneel) Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and when we had sinned against you and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent your only Son into the world for our salvation. By the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary he became flesh and dwelt among us. In obedience to your will, he stretched out his arms upon the cross and offered himself once for all, that by his suffering and death we might be saved. By his resurrection he broke the bonds of death, trampling Hell and Satan under his feet. As our great high priest, he ascended to your right hand in glory, that we might come with confidence before the throne of grace. On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise, after supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: 11

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Alleluia! We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving, and we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Word and Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son Jesus Christ. Sanctify us also, that we may worthily receive this holy sacrament, and be made one body with him, so that he may dwell in us and we in him. And bring us with all your saints into the fullness of your heavenly kingdom, where we shall see our Lord face to face. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ: By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing: The Lord s Prayer The Fraction Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. Fraction Anthem All Baptized Christians are invited to communion. Please extend both hands to receive the bread and assist the server by guiding the chalice to your lips. If you do not desire the cup, leave the bread in your hand. The server will dip it in the wine and return it to you. For those not receiving communion, you are welcome to come for a blessing by crossing your arms over your heart as you come before the priest. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. 12

PRAYER MINISTRY: After receiving communion, Prayer Teams are available through the doors to the right of the altar. Communion Music The Post Communion Prayer (Kneel or Sit) Let us pray. & Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal Kingdom. And now Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. [FATHER, anoint our Visitation Communion Ministry. LORD JESUS, bless those who will receive your body and blood. HOLY SPIRIT, empower those who administer this sacrament. Amen. Recessional The Dismissal Deacon Alleluia! Alleluia! Let us go forth in the name of Christ. Thanks be to God. Alleluia! Alleluia! 13
