Men s Summit 2016 BILL CLUCK The United Methodist Men of the church will gather for fun, food, fellowship, and spiritual renewal at the Annual Men s Summit on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 5:00 pm. in the Christian Life Center. This marks the sixth consecutive year for this annual event for all men of First United Methodist Church, Hot Springs, and their male guests. The theme for the 2016 Summit is Make Your Paths Straight based on the scripture Hebrews 12:13. Steve Wild Man Wilson, Public Affairs Coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, will be our keynote speaker. Wilson is a well-known and popular speaker at men s events throughout the state. He has worked for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for 38 years. He earned his Wild Man nickname in 1984 when he became the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission s coordinator of project WILD. During his career with AGFC he has earned the Commission s Employee of the Year Award twice and the Arkansas Wildlife Federation s Conservation Communicator of the Year Award twice. He also received the Ducks Unlimited Jerry Jones Sportsman of the Year award in 2011. He holds a Bachelor s degree from Southern Nazarene University in Bethany, Oklahoma, and a Master s of Business Administration from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. This will be one of his last speeches as an AGFC employee before he retires in April. Variety and enthusiasm have been a part of the Summit speakers selected in past years. The diversity of speakers has included former Razorback player and coach Ken Hatfield, Chaplain Colonel Walter (Bubba) Smith of Hot Springs Village, Larry Brown, father of war hero Adam Brown, and Cliff Harris, retired All-Pro NFL player. Steve Wilson will continue the tradition of bringing a special message of both inspiration and entertainment. The first Men s Summit was in 2011 and the big attraction that year was a free catfish dinner with all the trimmings. At all previous meetings, the menu has been a major feature of the event. Men attending these meetings have enjoyed everything from pork dishes to champion chili to prize-winning barbecue. This year Dr. Randy Hill returns as chief chef and will prepare his prizewinning barbecue. The local band Sign of Jonah will be our entertainment during our feast. Tickets are only $20 and each ticket will admit TWO men. Ladies, here is a wonderful Valentine s gift= for the man (or men) of your family! More than two dozen men are actively involved in planning and producing the 2016 Men s Summit. During the first Summit in 2011, Chuck Dudley outlined plans the United Methodist Men had for increasing the involvement of all men by giving them the opportunity to serve in their area of preference, such as Bible study, community service, or service to the church. Work Days have been scheduled by the men since that first meeting to help meet the needs of the church campus and facilities. This sixth annual meeting will feature the passing of leadership from Chuck Dudley to Bart Bledsoe. This once-a-year meeting is a highlight activity for the men of First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs. Every man is urged to attend and bring along a male friend as a guest. The men attending will be given the opportunity to indicate the areas where they would like to serve and to make suggestions for United Methodist Men s activities. Stephen Ministry Seven members will be commissioned as new Stephen Ministers at the 10:45 a.m. service in the sanctuary on Sunday, February 28. They will have completed the 50 hour Stephen Ministry training program to equip them to be Christian caregivers in the First United Methodist Church of Hot Springs Stephen Ministry program. They will join the current 18 active Stephen Ministers to serve members of our congregation as well as to others in our community. FUMC became a Stephen Ministry Congregation at the turn of this century. More than 40 people have been trained in our program. Those interested in becoming a part of the program have an opportunity to apply for the training in June of each year and to participate in the training beginning in September. The seven trainees to be commissioned are Cherry Ogburn, Patti Sweeney, Patti Willits, Harold Campbell, Matt McFarling, Wayne Ogburn and Ed Prince. Our Church welcomes these new Stephen Ministers! Our Bereavement Committee appreciates all those who help and cherish the faithfulness our church members have shown to our church and to the families of our congregation. They will be publishing recipes that members have prepared for the family meals and receptions each month. UMW Report On United Methodist Women (UMW) Sunday, we recognized the contributions made by the women of the church. From the beginning, women in our church have been involved in service. In 1879, Dr. Augustus Winfield organized the Ladies Aid Society to assist in the social life of the church and to raise funds for the improvement of church property. By 1925 we were known as the Women s Missionary Society. Wednesday family night suppers prepared by the WMS gathered the large congregation to a prayer meeting. The suppers provided a pleasant social hour and contributed to the parsonage fund for the nominal charge of 25 cents. The merger of the Ladies Aid Society and the Women s Missionary Society took place in 1939. The name Women s Society of Christian Service was adopted. Its sole purpose was to supply the needs of the local church, but soon began evolving into an organization with a worldwide purpose. The name United Methodist Women was adopted in 1973. Today our UMW Unit contains six circles. If you are mission minded and desire a place to make friends and serve please call the Unit president Ann Lowerre, (680-3022) or anyone listed below. Children s Ministries MICHELLE WILKINS Fumc Kidz Sunday School 1st - 5th grades are learning about Cooperation. Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do, Ecclesiastes 4:9. Each week in February will hear a Bible story about people who came together in faith to do something they never could have done alone. This month, think about this question: What can you do together? What can you do together as a family to demonstrate to your children the way God designed us not only to need each other, but also to need Him? How can we cooperate with God on His plan to change the world? Nursery, Toddlers, Pre-K and Kindergarten are learning all about Buckets of Love. Love each other as I have loved you. John 15:12, NIV. Watch the Buckets of Love preview video to see what we are learning this month: https://vimeo.com/146306103. They were so appreciative of everything you guys brought! They loved the journals and Blessing Bags you made for them! An extra special thank you goes out to Tonya Cockman, Director of Safe Haven Shelter, for giving an incredible presentation to the kids of what Safe Haven provides for homeless women and children in our community. The kids loved getting to ask Mrs.Tonya lots of questions about the shelter. Our next mission will be All You Need Is Love on Sunday, February 14th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Christian Life Center. We need everyone to bring a NEW stuffed animal for the Hot Springs Mercy Child Advocacy Center. Discipleship Ministries REV. TERESA HOLT Dinner Groups Join the fun of our small group dinner clubs! Each group consists of 8-12 people (singles/couples of all ages) who arrange to meet monthly for dinner at a time and date to be chosen by each group. This is a great way to make new acquaintances whether you have been around for years or just started visiting. Registration closes February 21st, and we will meet on Sunday evening, February 29th, to introduce you to your group. To register (even if you were in a dinner group last year) contact Teresa Holt at (501) 623-6668, ext. 116 or tholt@fumchs.com, or register online at www.fumchotsprings.com. John: The Gospel of Light and Life Study The Gospel of John is the most deeply spiritual of the four gospels. It includes some of the loftiest and most loved verses in all the Bible. The writing is filled with rich images and profound truths, but John notes that his aim in writing the gospel is that his readers will not only believe in Jesus Christ, but that they may have life in his name. This Lent, join Adam Hamilton and experience a season of spiritual growth and life-changing renewal while reading the entire Gospel of John. The study will take place Thursdays, February 18 March 24 from 9:30 11:00 a.m. in Christian Life Center room 209. John Johnson, Facilitator. The Holy Spirit Study Who is the Holy Spirit and what does he do? In this study, Billy Graham offers a sensitive and comprehensive portrait of the much discussed but often misunderstood member of the Trinity. It is crucial to develop a genuine biblical understanding of the Third Person of the Trinity and to experience an authentic outpouring of his power. The study will take place Tuesdays, February 9th April 12 from 9:30 11:30 a.m. in Christian Life Center room 201. Max Wittman, Facilitator.
