Please keep us in your prayers for travel mercies, as we will pray for both of our pastors and parishes as we make the journey. Fr. Wichert, Dale Garrett (pastoral council member) and veterans Brigette Blair and Marie Hedden are headed to Namalaka, Malawi to visit our Sister Parish St. Joseph, Sunday July 29 at 10pm. We begin with a "red eye" flight to Washington, D.C. After a 4 hour layover we will make the long leg of the journey on a 15 hour flight to Addis Ababa, Ethiopa where we spend a few hours before flying 4 hours to arrive in the capital city of Llilongwe, Malawi. There, we will be greeted by Bishop Montfort and his associates after clearing customs and getting our passports properly stamped and a Visa purchased. We will load up as many cars and a truck as are necessary for our group and all our luggage for the final 4 hour drive to the town of Mangochi on the southern shore of Lake Malawi. We will have journeyed a total of roughly 34 hours. MALAWI is 8 hours ahead of our time so the jet lag takes a few days to adjust to. We get into Mangochi on the evening of Tuesday when we left Seattle on Sunday night! After a few days we will make the two hour drive on a primitive road to arrive in Namalaka. We will be able to stay overnight in the village for the first time this year as the new rectory has been completed and the new pastor Fr. Davie Mambo will be hosting our stay of several days. We hope to send news updates from Malawi. PAGE 3

ANNOUNCEMENTS (Contact Andrea with questions or to help out.) Registration for Children s Faith Formation and Sacramental Preparation begins Next date for: Saturday/Sunday August 11 & 12. No Little Disciples or RCIA on August 4 & 5 for staff vacation. Baptize your baby? 40 day blessing? Call to sign up. RCIA Adapted for Children: Saturday August 11 at 3:30pm (lower Brendan House) RCIA Adapted for Teens: Sunday August 12 at 3:30pm (Lower Brendan House) Old Testament DAVID GOES TO WORK 1 Samuel 16: 14-23 David was a talented young man. He probably expected to be a shepherd all his life, but God had other plans. In the field when he saw a lion or a wolf, David would fit a stone into a leather sling, swing it around a couple of times and hit the predator animal. David also liked to sing, play a simple harp, and make up songs of praise. David went to work for King Saul because Saul decided he needed a musician to stay near him. Whenever Saul would become depressed or unhappy, the musician could play songs. He also needed a young man to carry his armor. One of the servants suggested David the son of Jesse. And that is how David came to be in the right place at the right time to fight a famous giant. New Testament THE BLIND MAN AT BETHSAIDA Mark 8: 22-26 The blind man at Bethsaida is a familiar story, not only because of the miracle of restoring the man s sight, but also because the man didn t get completely well right away. Sometimes when we say we don t see, we really mean we don t understand. Bethsaida is a village in the region of Galilee, far to the north of Jerusalem in Judea. Jesus was born in this part of the country and he spent a lot of time there. One day the blind man with his friends was waiting for Jesus to walk by. Jesus healed him but at first the man couldn t see things clearly. He said that the people walking around looked like walking trees. The second time Jesus touched his eyes, he was healed completely. LEARNING ABOUT OUR FAITH Praying the Rosary A rosary is a special string of beads put together in a certain order. Many years ago the prayer disciples in the desert were learning to pray without stopping. They tried filling their pockets with small pebbles. With each prayer they would drop a pebble. Soon they learned to string the pebbles together as beads. We believe that Our Lady gave St. Dominic the first rosary like the ones that we use. Alphabet Soup O Obadiah the prophet wrote at the time when the Jews were returning to Jerusalem after many years in exile, daughter in law Ruth took care of her. PAGE 4

Jesus makes it clear that it matters not how much one gives, but that it is planned, calculated, at least somewhat sacrificial (see Luke 24:1-4), and not simply from what is leftover at the end of the month. We propose the tithe (10%) as the ideal every family can consider working towards. This means taking steps to give 5% to one s parish, and 5% to other charities or causes you have personal passion for. You can register online at www.saintbrendan.org and click on the link Online Registration/New Parishioner on lower left corner of website and to give online, click on the Online Giving link.
