Page 4 St. Florian Parish 1 st Sunday of Lent St. Florian School Happenings... visit us at www.stflorianschool.org First Reconciliation March 13, 2014 Please keep the following students in your prayers as they celebrate their first reconciliation: Alcala, Jaylen Arreguin, Nikko Barraza, Lydia Bernicky, Alex Cambaliza, Jasmine Comacho, Elias Comacho, Isaiah Cuoco, Anthony Kelly, Joseph Pereira, Anthony Ramos, Lyric Villanueva, Apollonia Ari Martinez, a fifth grade student attending St. Florian School was enrolled in the Book of the Elect on Sunday, March 2 at the 9: 45am Mass. Ari has been studying for many months so that he can receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil this April. Today Ari will receive our blessing to go fourth to be formally accepted by Cardinal George at Holy Name Cathedral on March 1 6. Please keep Ari and his family in your prayers as he moves forward to complete his journey at the Easter Vigil. Mission Statement of St. Florian School Our mission is to provide each student with a Catholic education in all areas. The faculty and school families join the parish staff and fellow parishioners to form a living Catholic faith community. Our school population is multi-cultural and fosters sensitivity to the needs of all. We promote the students' burning desire for learning. Through education, service, support, formation and challenge, the students are called to realize their potential spiritually, socially, and intellectually. For one hundred years our school has been committed to carry out the Gospel values of Jesus Christ on a daily basis. From the Office of Catholic Schools Dear Krista Wilkinson, February 28, 201 4 At the end of January, the St. Florian School leaders were offered the opportunity to craft a plan which would allow the school to stay open at no cost to the Archdiocese of Chicago. In the weeks since, you have met the internal and external benchmarks detailed by the Office of Catholic Schools as required by March 1, 2014. The markers set out in St. Florian's plan included an increase in tuition rates; additional external scholarship support; increased governance oversight and support; and a three-year pledge drive. After a review this week of St. Florian's progress, the OCS team has validated that the school community is, thus far, meeting the conditions outlined in the sustainability plan. Additionally, Cardinal George has been informed of your progress. The St. Florian School's 2014-15 school year is positioned to operate without any financial assistance from the Archdioceses through promising enrollment efforts and a pledge drive that has already produced over $82,000 in cash and checks, $43,000 in FY1 5 pledges, $52,000 in annual pledges for FY16 and FY17, and a though plan to provide more governance oversight, donor management support and operational efficiencies. The implementation of this plan will continue to be closely monitored by both the Office of Catholic Schools and the school's leadership to ensure that the benchmarks and criteria for which the school is responsible are being upheld. Per the protocols provided to the school in January, failure to maintain financial independence, as you know, will result in the closure of the school. Thus, the future of the school rests with you. It is critical that the St. Florian school community continue to engage parishioners, families and alumni who have so powerfully stepped forward to assume ownership and accountability for the school's future. This opportunity could nor have happened without your vision, honesty and expertise which resulted in a careful plan to ensure that St. Florian will be there in service and mission, providing confidence in a strong academic and religious program. We thank you deeply for the progress you have made and will hold your efforts in prayer. Please excerpt this letter in any context you deem appropriate. Sincerely, Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. Superintendent Thomas McGrath Associate Superintendent, Operations

The Polish community of South Chicago figures predominantly in the film and there are some parishioners (who have already seen the film) who have recognized parents and grandparents in the archival photos used in the film. Page 6 St. Florian Parish 1 st Sunday of Lent Raising Faith Filled Kids One Word at a Time Criando hijos creyentes una palabra a la vez Consider Considerar Have you found yourself as a parent reacting without thinking? Maybe you had a fit of anger. Maybe you sulked. Maybe you found your self blurting out words your mother used to say that you vowed would never come from your lips. Such outbursts are often caused by anxiety. When that happens, it s time to consider. You might ask, Con sider what? Take Jesus advice and con sider the lilies of the field and the birds of the air who trust in the Lord and are taken care of by God. Jesus contrasts anxiety and faith. In the Kingdom of God, faith banishes fear and trust diminishes anxiety. Advertisers and newscasters bombard us with messages meant to increase our anxiety. Instead, listen for the voice of Jesus who invites you to share in his life of fullness.
