Sholosh Seudot You Gotta be Kiddin Me Halacha Discussion Shmuel called his stockbroker and asked him to invest ten thousand dollars in shares of Sony. Two weeks later, he called the broker and asked how his stocks in Sony were doing. You are confused, said the broker. You invested in Cony, not Sony. Cony? What Cony? I said Sony! insisted Shmuel Try to jog your memory, said the broker. According to my computer, you invested ten thousand dollars in Cony. Apparently, there was a misunderstanding and the stock broker accidentally invested Shmuel s money in the wrong company. However, the mistake was all for the best, since the stocks in Cony (which were always volatile) had tripled in price in the two weeks since Shmuel bought them. He had made twenty thousand dollars from the transaction. When Shmuel heard about his good fortune, he told the broker to sell the stocks immediately and transfer the thirty thousand dollars back into his account. Wait a second, said the broker. I also have a portion in those earnings. You said you wanted Sony. Had I not bought Cony instead, you would have never made all this money. I also deserve a share in it. Shmuel argued that the investment was his, the stocks were his, all the profit was his, and there was no reason for him to have to share it with the broker. Unable to reach an agreement, the two brought the question to a Torah authority to resolve for them. Discuss the answer with Rabbi Rothman at Sholosh Seudot Unveiling for Marcia Kleiman z l There will be an unveiling for Marcia Kleiman on Sunday morning, September 18, 9:30 AM at the Thornhill Community Section of Pardes Chaim Cemetery, 11818 Bathurst Street, Vaughan. Profiles This week we resumeour new feature in the bulletin with the seventh instalment of PROFILES Each week, we will profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive mannerto help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we feature Shoshana Aiko Esther Beker in honour of her Bat Mitzvah. TCS Editor: Did you obtain permission from her parents? TCS: Don t be such a worry wart. TCS Editor: Fine by me. I am not the one that will be charged with child endangerment. TCS: Let s get us started. Tell us about your name Shoshana. Shoshana: Shoshana means rose and my parents just thought it was pretty. Aiko is my Japanese name and it means loved child. If you meet my twin you will know why I got that name. Finally, Esther is my great grandmother on my Poppa s side. TCS:I understand you own 3 passports. Shoshana: I was born in the U.S.A so that was the first. My Mom got us Japanese passports and when we moved to Canada I picked up my 3 rd. TCS:Which country do you prefer? Shoshana:Each has some advantages and disadvantages. The political landscape in the U.S. is very discouraging but the economic opportunities are there, Japan has a wonderful culture but TV channel choices are terrible and of course you have those negative interest rates. And in Canada the cost of living is choking but I love my friends and of course I have my Bubby here. TCS: What about your uncle Ronny and aunty Carla? Shoshana: Definitely a big plus. Love seeing Ronny in shul every week and getting treated to Carla s amazing cooking. TCS:What is it like being a twin? Shoshana: It is strange. Boys are weird and I often can t figure out what is going through Taiji s brain. Pappa says that boys are easy to figure out but I am not sure about that. Don t get me wrong, I love my brother. But a little therapy might not be a bad thing. TCS Editor: Helps me get through this job. TCS:Do you incorporate some Japanese culture into your life? Shoshana: Respect is very big in Japanese culture and so I have been taught to respect elders, our shul and our school. Mommy speaks Japanese at home and though I struggle with it I can at least understand what she is saying. We have taken a few trips to Japan and we practice a Japanese martial art called Kendo. TCS: You have quite a few talents including dancing, art and singing. Tell us about winning the talent contest this summer at camp. Shoshana: I choreographed my own dance and had a lot of fun doing it. My fellow campers went wild.
TCS:Your family has moved around a lot so I am sure you have been members of many shuls. How does TCS stack up? Shoshana: It is hard to compare since I am older and what I want is very different than when I was a toddler. The people at TCS are very nice and I have friends here but there are no programs geared to my age. They started letting little kids into the older groups and it became babyish. Aside from davening and seeing friends there is nothing for Bat Mitzvah age girls. TCS: You were part of the TCS Bat Mitzvah program. How was that experience? Shoshana: I learned a lot and really enjoyed my time bonding with the other girls. We had a wonderful group with many kids who are not members of the shul. Hadassah did a fantastic job of teaching and guiding us. TCS: You also have participated in many endurance events. Which have you enjoyed the most and what future goals do you hope to accomplish? Shoshana: The 24 hour race was an amazing experience. Everything from the food/candy tent that welcomed us after each 1 mile lap to the camaraderie of the ultrarunners to seeing the Grand Canyon on our trip was special. I was quite proud of climbing the CN Tower last fall and hope to do so again next month. As far as long term endurance goals I do hope to make it through the world s toughest triathlon staying awake through the combination of the Rabbi s speech, a Brian Callan Musaf and Stuart s announcements. They say it can t be done and it will take a lot of training and possibly some performance enhancing drugs but don t sell this girl short. TCS: Finally,Stuart is catching up on his court ordered community service this week so you are president for a week. What changes would you make? Shoshana: Adults who take from the kids table at kiddish should be given lashes and whoever is running the youth programs needs to talk to the kids and find out what needs to be changed.
