PRAYING THE ROSARY, PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL AND THE SUB TUUM PRAESIDIUM PRAYER IN PARISHES Along with other bishops in the USA, Bishop Scharfenberger has noted that a number of people have asked about parishes adopting the practice of reciting the rosary concluding with the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. He wrote about this in an article in the Evangelist published on Thursday, 4 th October. Furthermore, in a statement on 29 th September 2018 (the Feast Day of the Archangels), Pope Francis had asked all Catholics to pray the rosary daily during the month of October, asking Mary and St. Michael the Archangel to intercede for the protection of the Church in a moment of spiritual turbulence. Pope Francis stated that prayer is the weapon against the Great Accuser who goes around the world seeking to accuse. Only prayer can defeat him The Russian mystics and the great saints of all the traditions advised, in moments of spiritual turbulence, to shelter beneath the mantle of the Holy Mother of God. The statement also encouraged the use of the prayer of Sub Tuum Praesidium. In the light of these developments, Bishop Scharfenberger has encouraged parishes, families and individuals to adopt these devotions and prayers as seems best in local or personal circumstances. Doing this would also provide an opportunity for some catechesis about these prayers and devotions. He also notes that many parishes and families or individuals already follow this practice (as we do in our own parish!). The St. Michael Prayer is also known as the Leonine Prayer. It was introduced in 1884, when Pope Leo XIII ordered certain prayers to be said at the end of the Low Mass, in defense of the independence of the Holy See. In 1929 the Pope s independence seemed more secure and so Pope Pius XI decreed that the intention for which these prayers should be offered was to permit tranquility and freedom to profess the faith to be restored to the afflicted people of Russia. The practice of reciting this and the other Leonine prayers after Mass officially ended in March 1965 with the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. Thirty years later in his Regina Caeli Address on Sunday 24 April 1994, Pope Saint John Paul II recommended its use as a prayer for spiritual battle and protection, especially in times of distress, turbulence and uncertainty. He said: May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle that the Letter to the Ephesians speaks of: 'Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might' (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes the image of St Michael the Archangel (Revelation 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had this picture in mind when, at the end of the last century, he brought in, throughout the Church, a special prayer to St Michael. Although this prayer is no longer recited, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world. The Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer is probably the oldest prayer that we have that addresses our Blessed Mother. A copy of the prayer has been found, for example, on a third century papyrus scroll from Egypt. Like most prayers, it asks for the protection of our Blessed Mother, most especially in times of difficulty or turmoil. In our parish, the rosary is usually prayed before the weekday Masses and is concluded with the St. Michael Prayer. Following the request of the Bishop, we are now praying the St. Michael Prayer after all weekend Masses immediately following the dismissal and before the recessional hymn. The Saint Michael Prayer along with the Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer can be found at the back of our new red Mass books (located in the pews). St. Michael the Archangel Prayer: Saint Michael Archangel, defend us in battle, be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil; may God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Sub Tuum Praesidium Prayer: We fly to Thy protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our petitions in our necessities, but deliver us always from all dangers, O Glorious and Blessed Virgin. Amen. Father Anthony

As Jesus was walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is now called Peter, and his brother Andrew, casting a net into the sea; they were fishermen. He said to them, Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men. At once they left their nets and followed him (Matthew 4:18-20). Before the multiplication of loaves, it was Andrew who spoke up about the boy who had the barley loaves and fishes. St. Andrew is the Patron Saint of Fishermen.
