Because our summer luncheons were so popular, we will continue them through June to October of 2019. From the President Our Fall Fashion Show was a wonderful success. We had a capacity crowd and our Scholarship Fund and some of our charities will benefit from the generosity of our members and their guests. Thanks go to Chair Pat Waldron, Raffle Prize Chair Eileen Dix, Mary Scheitler who designed the flyer, tickets and program and all the members who helped sell raffle tickets and were models in the Fashion Show. We are looking forward to a busy December. On Wednesday, December 5 we are returning to Worth Avenue for a background tour of the courtyards and mysterious places. We follow the tour with a luncheon at Taboo Restaurant. (See Mary Fallon s article on page 4.) Community Caring Center Our Business Meeting is December 6 at 11:00 am. We will continue to meet at the First Baptist Church on Seacrest and Boynton Beach Boulevards. May I remind all our members that this is an important meeting. Not only are upcoming events discussed, but your input is asked on many matters that are presented. Your suggestions about how our money is spent and what programs we should sponsor are very important. Saturday, December 8 is the day we participate in the Boynton Beach Holiday Parade. This is a favorite event that showcases our Club. See Jean Nolan s article on page 4. Thursday, December 13 is our Past Presidents Tea. We honor those Presidents and we also honor our members who have achieved special anniversaries of 10, 15, 20 years. We remember those members who have passed away and we welcome our new members who have joined during the past year. Teresa Markey has an article on page 3 explaining this event. I wish you all a Happy Hanukkah, celebrated December 2 to December 10, a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We ll see you all at the Business Meeting on January 10. There is a great need for health and beauty products such as, deodorant, tooth paste and brushes, shampoo, hair combs and brushes, baby food and formula. You can hand them in at a meeting, lunch or email ladym2000@aol.com Next Newsletter Deadline is DECEMBER 13 Editor: Marion Cone HIGHWAYMEN ART SHOW I am very excited about our Highwayman Art Show that is scheduled for Saturday, January 19 from 11 am to 3 pm. We are co-sponsoring it with the Boynton Beach Historical Society, and it will be held at the First Presbyterian Church, 235 SW 6 th Avenue in Boynton Beach. Doretha Hair Trusdell, the widow of one of the original Highwaymen, Alfred Hair, has been my contact in arranging this event. Four or five of the original artists will be displaying their paintings: Al Black, Curtis Arnett, Mary Ann Carroll, Isaac Knight and possibly Willie Reagan. Doretha will have Alfred Hair s paintings as well as hers. We may even have one of the artists executing a painting that day. Many things are in the planning stage, but we will need members to help with organizing and greeting. We also will set up a Membership table and need members to be there to answer questions and encourage membership. The Church members will handle coffee and snacks. The Historical Society will help with publicity, but we also need to do our part in getting the word out. We will have flyers that our members can distribute. The event is free to the public, and both the Historical Society and the Presbyterian Church hope that this is the beginning of an annual Art Event. We are not charging the artists any fees, nor are we asking them to give us a percentage of their sales. I am putting a copy of one of Alfred Hair s paintings on a poster which Doretha will have many of the original Highwaymen sign. Copies of this poster can sell for $10. P A G E 3 B W C F O C U S D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 8 IT S HEAD START TIME AGAIN Christmas is Coming! We can be Santa Claus for the little children of Head Start. We will be donating to these children an outfit and a toy, just as we have donated before, amounting to no more than $25 or $30. They are boys and girls ages 3 to 5 years old. Remember, do not wrap the presents. Put each in a Christmas bag and then put the two bags in a big bag marked with the size of clothes and boy or girl. I need to collect these bags before or at the Business Meeting on December 6. I will be delivering them to the school that very afternoon. Eileen Dix PAST PRESIDENT S TEA This year's Past President s Tea is scheduled to be held at 2 PM on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2018 at the Boynton First Baptist Church located on the North West corner of Boynton Beach Blvd. and Seacrest. We are asking members to bring finger food or sandwiches on serving plates. Looking forward to your attendance. Terry Markey Raisin' Cain Tour Boynton Woman's Club - Boynton Beach Garden Club Thursday Feb 14, 2019-7:15 AM meet in the middle of the Plaza where Barnes & Noble is located on Congress between Boynton & Old Boynton Beach Blvd. The trip includes the bus, tour, lunch at the Clewiston Country Club and gratuities all free covered by the Florida Sugar Cane League. A $15.00 charge payable to BWC has been added for incidentals. It will take about an hour and half to Clewiston where the official tour begins. We will have discussions on the bus on the way over. Overview first stop Clewiston Chamber of Commerce for a short history of the area, stroll through the museum housed in the chamber then pick up our tour guide. The tour will provide how sugar is made from field to pantry, sustainable farming and best management practices, behind the scenes view of sugar and citrus grown and harvested in south Florida, the history and development of the Glades area, operation of the sugar processing facilities and more. Boynton Beach Holiday Parade We will be participating again in the Holiday Parade on Saturday, December 8 which begins at 4 pm. We have a convertible for some members to ride in, and the rest of us will walk along Federal Highway from the starting place on SE 4 th Street to the Christmas Tree on Ocean Avenue. As the exact parade details are limited at this time, please call Jean Nolan at 561-200-4558 to let her know you d like to be in the parade. Leave a message with your name and telephone number. Worth Avenue Tour The Worth Avenue Tour in Palm Beach is an historical tradition. Mr. Rick Rose conducts a tour that covers much of the history of Worth Avenue, including architectural importance, influence on the fashion world and the development of the legendary social scene that established Palm Beach as America s first resort destination during the gilded age and the birthplace of luxury brands. There is a $10 charge for the tour, payable that day. There are no reservations for this tour on Dec 5th that begins at 11 am and lasts 75 minutes, so we will carpool and arrive by 10:30. We will meet near the Barnes and Noble parking lot on Congress between Boynton Beach and Old Boynton Beach Boulevards at 9:45 am. We do need to make lunch reservations at Taboo Restaurant, so you must call Mary Fallon at 516-639- 9337 by December 1 to confirm your attendance.
P A G E 5 B W C F O C U S D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 8 FASHION SHOW LUNCHEON NOTES NOVEMBER 14TH The members and guests really turned out at Benvenuto's for our annual fashion show luncheon and because of the efforts of many, it was a great day with a full house! It was impressive to see so many new faces along with members shopping with the vendors, buying tickets for the raffles and competing in the silent auctions. Eileen Dix did a wonderful job in putting together over 40 gift certificates which she started soliciting this past summer. Kay helped her in arranging the terrific auctions and raffle sales. And what about Marion Ortiz wearing her money hat? That too was a big winner! It was a great time to socialize with friends and as always, have a lovely lunch and dessert served by the courteous staff at Benvenuto's. During lunch Kay kept giving door prizes to the winners of drawn luncheon tickets. If you were one of the lucky ones, then you received a gift certificate to a local restaurant or one of the other great prizes. Then we all watched as six of our members plus a guest walked the runway wearing beautiful fashions from Chico's. Kuddos to Terry Markey, Donna Artes, Denise Chamberlain, Debra Tucker, Susan Thein, Marie Gennaci, and our guest Vivian Stanz as they did a fabulous job! They looked lovely in their fashions and really strutted their stuff - just like real models!! I must also thank Mary Scheitler for printing the tickets, designing and printing the programs and checking members and guests in along with her helper, Barbara Grimes. The lovely fall flower arrangements on the table were arranged by a friend of mine, Judy Culhane. She did this on a zero budget with all purchased from the Dollar Store and we received so many nice compliments on the tables. Our ticket sellers Mary Fallon, Barbara Grimes, Evelyn Henry, Jean Nolan, Annette Phelps, Kelly Rabin and Linda Schrader made sure everyone had an opportunity to buy a raffle or bid on an auction item. It takes volunteers, commitment and many hours and months of work to have a successful charity event. Although the final accounting isn't tallied at this writing, I can say the event was very successful. Thank you for the support.
