From: Immanuel on the Green <rector-immanuel@comcast.net> To: jmea55 <jmea55@aol.com> Subject: The Curate: St Peter's Choir Visit on Sunday + Freedom Rang! + Lots More! Date: Fri, Jul 20, 2018 7:30 pm THE CURATE: July 2018 St Peter's Choir Visit on Sunday + Freedom Rang! + Lots More! NOTE FROM THE RECTOR Dear Brothers and Sisters, At Immanuel, we are always striving to faithfully discern where God is leading us in the Church and in our community and, as we all know, that work does not cease during the summer months. While our vestry faithfully ful ills its canonical responsibilities for overseeing the budget and buildings, (the canons make a distinction between authority over spiritual matters - rector, and temporal matters - vestry) we all acknowledge our communal call to keep awake and open in our life and ministry together. As we continue through the summer, I encourage every single one of us to be attentive to the Holy Spirit. This involves listening, especially to Holy Scripture and it involves participating, especially in regular Eucharistic worship, and then thinking about where we are being drawn in our own lives. When we listen attentively, as disciples of Jesus, the Holy Spirit is present. We do not have to be a biblical or liturgical expert. Over time the biblical stories become our stories and our regular round of worship sinks into our bones. If we engage in this kind of behavior and look forward to hearing what others have to say, it can be quite rewarding. So here is a question for us all to ponder over the summer as we continue to discover where God is leading each of us in mission: When the people of Immanuel bring together their https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/printmessage 1/11
deepest desires and greatest gifts, in what ways can we engage more deeply with God? If you are an artist, paint a picture of what you believe God is bringing forth; if you are a photographer, take some pictures of what you think God is up to; if you are a parent of a child, share one of your favorite children s stories that revealed something about God; if you are an usher or a greeter, think about the future God is bringing forth; and if you are brand new here or have been here for decades, then construct a vision in your own way of our future together. There is no doubt that the people of Immanuel are wonderful. We are a happy and healthy group of disciples of Jesus! People who come to Immanuel are gifted, passionate, loving, thoughtful and dedicated. Take just a few minutes to imagine what spectacular gifts and passions you can share to help us all deepen our spiritual lives. Be mindful of how all our combined gifts can help us moving forward. Just think about how we together can make a difference in Christ s Name! God bless you, and I'll see you in church! Fr. Keene IMMANUEL CHORISTERS SING IN ELY CATHEDRAL In just three weeks, several members of the Immanuel Choir along with a number of choristers from St Peter s Church, Lewes will depart for England, where they will serve a weeklong residency in Ely Cathedral. The 36-voice choir will sing Choral Evensong each day August 13 through 18, and the principal Mass on Sunday, August 19, in place of the regular cathedral choir (currently on summer holiday). Jack Burnam and St Peter s Choirmaster T. J. Thomas will share the directing duties; our organist for the week will be Mark Laubach, canon musician of St Stephen s Pro-Cathedral in Wilkes-Barre, PA and an old friend of Immanuel Parish. The town of Ely is in East Anglia, just north of Cambridge. The cathedral, which dominates the skyline of the countryside for miles around, is considered one of the inest examples of Romanesque architecture in England. It features a unique and spectacular Octagon Tower that rises 217 feet above the Crossing; and a beautiful Lady Chapel, thought by many to possess the most perfect acoustics for music in all of England, which will be the site of Evensong for the Feast of St Mary the Virgin on August 15. The singers have been preparing for this musical pilgrimage for over two years, mastering a considerable repertoire that includes a Palestrina Mass, seven different settings of service music for Evening Prayer, seven anthems, and seven Psalms set to Anglican chant, plus a number of hymns and short responses. https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/printmessage 2/11
Everyone will be staying at the Lamb, Ely s largest hotel, a Regency-style former coaching inn in the center of Ely, a minute's walk from the cathedral and a four-minute walk from Oliver Cromwell's House, you can see a map here!. The group will enjoy daytime excursions to Norwich, Cambridge, and a number of historic homes and sites of interest. Hear the Ely Singers before they go! Two farewell events are planned as the choirs prepare to depart for England. This Sunday, they will sing for the 10 o clock Mass at Immanuel, and visit with parishioners, friends, and well-wishers at the coffee hour in the Academy following the service. Don t miss this opportunity to hear English Cathedral music without having to leave home! Sunday, August 5, the choirs will sing a festival service of Choral Evensong at 5 o clock in St Peter s, Lewes. All are welcome to join us for this service as well, of course! CAN YOU HELP WITH HOSPITALITY? Your help would be appreciated to welcome our guests from St Peter s at the Coffee Hour this Sunday, following the 10 o clock Mass. Sandwiches will be provided; but if you can share a salad, an hors d oeuvre, or a plate of cookies, please bring your ready-to-serve contribution to the Academy parlor before the service. Jeannette Burnam (302-994-6029) is happy to answer any questions you may have. Thank you! LET FREEDOM RING Once again Immanuel Episcopal Church hosted the July 4th celebration of "Let Freedom Ring" when bells throughout New Castle and across America rang 13 times, once for each original state at precisely 2 PM commemorating the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Greetings were given by Reverend Christopher Paul Keene, New Castle Councilperson Valarie Leary, and Harry B. Roberts III, President of Delaware Society's Major Peter Jaquett Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. The Vocal Exchange Quartet, members of Region 19 of the Sweet Adelines and the Diamond State Chorus sang the "Star Spangled Banner" and "Hallelujah" by Leonard Cohen. Brian Cannon of the New Castle Court House Museum related the considerable effort made by Caesar Rodney, George Read, John Haslet and others to convince representatives of the lower three counties to separate from Pennsylvania and prepare a government in the event independence would be declared. Despite early resistance in Kent and Sussex Counties by loyalists to King George III, separation was declared from Pennsylvania and England on June 15, 1776. The customary program end had 13 children ring the small Liberty Bell given to Delaware in 1976 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry of London which also made Philadelphia's Independence Hall Liberty Bell in 1752. https://mail.aol.com/webmail-std/en-us/printmessage 3/11
Attendance exceeded 100. Many also rang the small bell and took self-guided tours of the yard where 31 Revolutionary War Patriots had graves marked with a US lag, including Private Robert Clay, Immanuel Parish Rector for 36 years who is buried under the center aisle. A happy celebration was enjoyed by all. We hope to see you again next year. Hunger Doesn't Take a Vacation During the summer months, our Emmanuel Dining Room ministry needs volunteers more than ever, as many of the people who regularly help out are away. No special skills are required to help with EDR, just a willingness to help cook and serve our set menu of food. Every month we serve hot lunches at the Rogers Road location in New Castle and at 2nd and Jackson Streets in Wilmington. Volunteers can help in shifts from 9:30 to 11, from 11:45 to 1 or for the entire morning, depending on their availability. Our dates for the summer are as follows: Saturday, August 18 - Second and Jackson Monday, August 20 - Rogers Road If you are interested in helping, please contact Mara Gorman at maragorman@gmail.com or 302-690-7520, or the of ice on (302)328-2413 Adult Education Forum Ransom theory? The Academy was built c. 1798-99 as a private academy. It was based on a design of Philadelphia architect, Peter Crowding, who was also the architect for the George Read II House and the Parish House. In addition, he was the architect of #18 The Green (currently the residence of Cynthia and Mark Batty). Crowding worked with local builder, Jeremiah Bowman, who owned a lumberyard on the Strand for many years. Sadly, his lumberyard helped fuel the Great Fire of 1824 which destroyed many homes on The Strand. Bowman and his wife, Susanna LeFevre Bowman, are buried in Immanuel s churchyard.
