(For other Masses for the Dead refer to the Roman Missal pg 1433ff) 2 INTRODUCTORY RITES RITE OF RECEPTION- if the Rite of reception of the body takes place at the beginning of the funeral mass the Introductory Rites are those given here and the usual Introductory Rites for Mass, including the penitential rites, are omitted. If the Rite of Reception of the body has already taken place, the Mass beings in the usual manner. GREETING (At the Church Door) The Grace of Our Lord Jesus Christ the love of God and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all And with your spirit SPRINKLING WITH HOLY WATER In the waters of baptism N. died with Christ and rose with him to new life. May he/she now share with Him eternal glory. PLACING OF PALL May Christ who claimed N. in baptism now enfold him/her in his love and bring him/her to eternal life. (ENTRANCE PROCESSION) PLACING OF CHRISTIAN SYMBOLS (The following texts maybe used during the Reception at the Church when placing the Christian symbols is desired. A symbol of the Christian life, such as the book of the Gospels, a bible or a cross. These may be carried in procession and then placed on the coffin) PLACING OF BIBLE In life, N. cherished the Gospel of Christ. May Christ now greet him/her with these words of eternal life: Come, blessed of my Father! PLACING OF CROSS In baptism N. received the sign of the cross. May he/she now share in Christ s victory over sin and death.

INVITATION TO PRAYER (If there is no Mass the following text is used) My brothers and sisters, we have come together to renew our trust in Christ who, by dying on the cross, has freed us from eternal death and, by rising, has opened for us the gates of heaven. 3 Let us pray for our brother/sister, that he/she may share in Christ s victory, and let us pray for ourselves, that the Lord may grant us the gift of his loving consolation. OPENING PRAYER Let us pray. O God, almighty Father, our faith professes that your Son died and rose again; mercifully grant that through this mystery your servant N., who has fallen asleep in Christ, may rejoice to rise again through him. Who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. (During the Easter season) OPENING PRAYER Let us pray. Listen kindly to our prayers, O Lord: as our faith in your Son, raised from the dead, is deepened, may our hope of resurrection for your departed servant N. also find new strength. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. LITURGY OF THE WORD FIRST READING A reading from the book of Wisdom 3:1-6, 9 He accepted them as a holocaust. The souls of the virtuous are in the hands of God, no torment shall ever touch them. In the eyes of the unwise they did appear to die, their going looked like a disaster, their leaving us like annihilation; but they are in peace. If they experienced punishment as men see it, their hope was rich with immortality; slight was their affliction, great will their blessings be. God has put them to the test and proved them worthy to be with him; he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a holocaust.

They who trust in him will understand the truth, those who are faithful will live with him in love; for grace and mercy await those he has chosen. 4 The Word of the Lord. RESPONSORIAL PSALM Response: The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Psalm 23 1. The Lord is my shepherd; there is nothing I shall want. Fresh and green are the pastures where he gives me repose. Near restful waters he leads me, to revive my drooping spirit. (R) 2. He guides me along the right path; he is true to his name. If I should walk in the valley of darkness no evil would I fear. You are there with your crook and your staff; with these you give me comfort. (R) 3. You have prepared a banquet for me in the sight of my foes. My head you have anointed with oil; my cup is overflowing. (R) 4. Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life. In the Lord s own house shall I dwell for ever and ever. (R) SECOND READING A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans 14:7-12 Whether alive or dead, we belong to the Lord. The life and death of each of us has its influence on others; if we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord, so that alive or dead we belong to the Lord. This explains why Christ both died and came to life, it was so that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living. We shall all have to stand before the judgement seat of God; as Scripture says: By my life it is the Lord who speaks every knee shall bend before me, and every tongue shall praise God. It is to God, therefore, that each of us must give an account of himself. The Word of the Lord. ALLELUIA Mt.25:34 Alleluia, alleluia. Come, you whom my Father has blessed, says the Lord; inherit the kingdom prepared for you since the foundation of the world. Alleluia.

GOSPEL 5 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to John Glory to you, O Lord. I am the resurrection and the life. Jn 11:21-27 Martha said to Jesus, If you had been here, my brother would not have died, but I know that, even now, whatever you ask of God, he will grant you. Your brother, said Jesus to her, will rise again. Martha said, I know he will rise again at the resurrection on the last day. Jesus said: I am the resurrection and the life. If anyone believes in me, even though he dies he will live, and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this? Yes, Lord, she said, I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, the one who was to come into this world. The Gospel of the Lord. HOMILY GENERAL INTERCESSIONS Brothers and sisters, Jesus Christ is risen from the dead and sits at the right hand of the Father, where he intercedes for his Church. Confident that God hears the voices of those who trust in the Lord Jesus, we join our prayers to his: 1. In baptism N. received the light of Christ. Scatter the darkness now and lead him/her over the waters of death. Lord, in your mercy. Response: Hear our prayer. 2. Our brother/sister N. was nourished at the table of the Saviour. Welcome him/her into the halls of the heavenly banquet. Lord, in your mercy. (R) 3. Many friends and members of our families have gone before us and await the kingdom. Grant them an everlasting home with your Son. Lord, in your mercy. (R) 4. Many people die by violence, war, and famine each day. Show your mercy to those who suffer so unjustly these sins against your love, and gather them to the eternal kingdom of peace. Lord, in your mercy. (R)

6 5. Those who trusted in the Lord now sleep in the Lord. Give refreshment, rest, and peace to all whose faith is known to you alone. Lord, in your mercy. (R) 6. (For the mourners) The family and friends of N. seek comfort and consolation. Heal their pain and dispel the darkness and doubt that come from grief. Lord, in your mercy. (R) 7. We are assembled here in faith and confidence to pray for our brother/sister N.. Strengthen our hope so that we might live in the expectation of your Son s coming. Lord, in your mercy. (R) Lord God, giver of peace and healer of souls, hear the prayers of the Redeemer, Jesus Christ, and the voices of your people, whose lives were purchased by the blood of the Lamb. Forgive the sins of all who sleep in Christ and grant them a place in the kingdom. We ask this through Christ our Lord. LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST OFFERTORY HYMN see Appendix at the back If there is no singing, the following may be followed. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the bread we offer you: fruit of the earth and work of human hands, it will become for us the bread of life. Blessed be God for ever. Blessed are you, Lord God of all creation, for through your goodness we have received the wine we offer you: fruit of the vine and work of human hands, it will become our spiritual drink. Blessed be God for ever. ORATE, FRATES Pray, brethren (brothers and sisters), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands, for the praise and glory of his name, for our good, and the good of all his holy Church.

PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS 7 As we humbly present to you these sacrificial offerings, O Lord, for the salvation of your servant N., we beseech your mercy, that he/she, who did not doubt your Son to be a loving Saviour, may find in him a merciful Judge. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. (During the Easter season) PRAYER OVER THE OFFERINGS Look favourably on our offerings, O Lord, so that your departed servant N. may be taken up into glory with your Son, in whose great mystery of love we are all united. Through Christ our Lord. PREFACE DIALOGUE The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just. PREFACE I FOR THE DEAD The hope of resurrection in Christ It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God, through Christ our Lord. In him the hope of blessed resurrection has dawned, that those saddened by the certainty of dying might be consoled by the promise of immortality to come. Indeed for your faithful, Lord, life is changed not ended, and, when this earthly dwelling turns to dust, an eternal dwelling is made ready for them in heaven. And so, with Angels and Archangels, with Thrones and Dominions,

and with all the hosts and Powers of heaven, we sing the hymn of your glory, as without end we acclaim: 8 SANCTUS Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of hosts. Heaven and earth are full of Your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. EUCHARISTIC PRAYER II You are indeed Holy, O Lord, the fount of all holiness. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion, he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU. In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice and, once more giving thanks, he gave it to his disciples, saying: TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME. The mystery of faith: We proclaim your death, O Lord, and profess your resurrection, until you come again. Therefore, as we celebrate the memorial of his Death and Resurrection, we offer you, Lord, the Bread of life and the Chalice of salvation, giving thanks that you have held us worthy to be in your presence and minister to you. Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ,

we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit. 9 Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with Benedict our Pope and Nicholas our Bishop and all the clergy. Remember your servant N., whom you have called (today) from this world to yourself. Grant that he/she who was united with your Son in a death like his, may also be one with him in his Resurrection. Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection, and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face. Have mercy on us all, we pray, that with the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with the blessed Apostles, and all the Saints who have pleased you throughout the ages, we may merit to be coheirs to eternal life, and may praise and glorify you through your Son, Jesus Christ. DOXOLOGY Through him, and with him, and in him, O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever. COMMUNION RITE At the Saviour s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be they name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may always be free from sin

and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. 10 For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you; look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace. BREAKING OF THE BREAD AGNUS DEI Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world: grant us peace. COMMUNION Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb. Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed. COMMUNION HYMN

PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION 11 Let us pray. Lord God, whose Son left us, in the Sacrament of his Body, food for the journey, mercifully grant that, strengthened by it, our brother/sister N. may come to the eternal table of Christ. Who lives and reigns for ever and ever. (During the Easter season) PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION Let us pray. Grant, we pray, O Lord, that your servant N., for whom we have celebrated this paschal Sacrament, may pass over to a dwelling place of light and peace. Through Christ our Lord. FINAL COMMENDATION INVITATION TO PRAYER SILENCE Before we go our separate ways, let us take leave of our brother/sister. May our farewell express our affection for him/her; may it ease our sadness and strengthen our hope. One day we shall joyfully greet him/her again when the love of Christ, which conquers all things, destroys even death itself. All pray in silence. SIGN OF FAREWELL The coffin may now be sprinkled with holy water and incensed. Before sprinkling We hope and we believe that we will come back to life. As sign of our faith, I bless the mortal remains of our brother/sister N in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Before incensing As sign of respect for our brother/sister N may this incense surround our brother s/sister s body and go up to God with our prayer.

The following is sung or said while the priest incenses the coffin 12 SONG OF FAREWELL I know that my Redeemer lives, And on that final day of days, His voice shall bid me rise again: Unending joy, unceasing praise! This hope I cherish in my heart: To stand on earth, my flesh restored, And, not a stranger but a friend, Behold my Saviour and my Lord. or 1. I know that my Redeemer lives: on the last day I shall rise again. Response: And in my flesh I shall see God. 2. I shall see him myself face to face; and my own eyes shall behold my Saviour. (R) 3. Within my heart this hope I cherish: that in my flesh I shall see God. (R) PRAYER OF COMMENDATION Into your hands, Father of mercies, we commend our brother/sister N. in the sure and certain hope that, together with all who have died in Christ, he/she will rise with him on the last day. [We give you thanks for the blessings which you bestowed upon N. in this life: they are signs to us of your goodness and of our fellowship with the saints in Christ.] Merciful Lord, turn toward us and listen to our prayers: open the gates of paradise to your servant and help us who remain to comfort one another with assurances of faith, until we all meet in Christ and are with you and with our brother/sister for ever.

PROCESSION TO THE PLACE OF COMMITAL 13 In peace let us take our brother/sister to his/her place of rest. May the angels lead you into paradise; may the martyrs come to welcome you and take you to the Holy City, the new and eternal Jerusalem.
