MONTH OF MERCY September is the Month of Mercy, we focus on some of the Marian feast days we celebrate this month. On September 15th, we honor Mary under the title of Our Lady of Sorrows or Mother of Sorrows (Mater Dolorosa). The devotion to Our Lady of Sorrows began in the twelfth century with the Order of the Servants of Mary, also known as the Servites, founded in 1668. They promoted a devotion known as the Seven Sorrows of Our Lady, which continues to this day. The seven sorrows of Mary are: 1) The prophecy of Simeon, 2) The flight into Egypt, 3) The loss of Jesus in the Temple, 4) Mary meets Jesus on the way to the Cross, 5) Jesus dies on the Cross, 6) Mary receives the dead body of her son, and 7) Jesus is laid in the tomb. The opening prayer of the Mass on this feast day reminds us that our sufferings are united with Mary and Christ. So we pray, O God, who willed that, when your Son was lifted high on the Cross, his Mother should stand close by and share his suffering, grant that your Church, participating with the Virgin Mary in the Passion of Christ, may merit a share in his Resurrection; who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Our Lady of Sorrows, pray for us!
