The Baptism of Our Lord Epiphany means manifestation. On this day we celebrate the revelation of Christ to the Gentiles that is, to all nations. Some Christian traditions celebrate three great epiphanies on this day: the magi s adoration of the Christ child, Jesus baptism in the Jordan River, and his first miracle, in which he changes water into wine. The word and sacraments are for us the great epiphany of God s grace and mercy. We go forth to witness to the light that shines brightly in our midst. GATHERING The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. P: Presiding Minister L: Lector C: Congregation WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS MATTHEW 2:1-12 1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 asking, Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage. 3 When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4 and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They told him, In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6 And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel. 7 Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8 Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage. 9 When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10 When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11 On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. 2

Gathering Hymn We Three Kings of Orient Are WOV # 646 THANKSGIVING FOR BAPTISM ELW pg. 97 P: Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. C: Amen. 3

P: Joined to Christ in the waters of baptism, we are clothed with God's mercy and forgiveness. Let us give thanks for the gift of baptism. Water is poured into the font as the presiding minister gives thanks. We give you thanks, O God, for in the beginning your Spirit moved over the waters and by your Word you created the world, calling forth life in which you took delight. Through the waters of the flood you delivered Noah and his family. Through the sea you led your people Israel from slavery into freedom. At the river your Son was baptized by John and anointed with the Holy Spirit. By water and your Word you claim us as daughters and sons, making us heirs of your promise and servants of all. We praise you for the gift of water that sustains life, and above all we praise you for the gift of new life in Jesus Christ. C: Shower us with your Spirit, and renew our lives with your forgiveness, grace, and love. To you be given honor and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. GREETING P: The grace of our Lord, Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C: And also with you. KYRIE ELW pg. 213 4

PRAYER OF THE DAY P: O God our Father, at the baptism of Jesus you proclaimed him your beloved Son and anointed him with the Holy Spirit. C: Make all who are baptized into Christ faithful to their calling to be your daughters and sons, and empower us all with your Spirit, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. The congregation is seated. Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song. PSALM 29 L: Psalm 29 will be read responsively by full verse. 1 Ascribe to the Lord, you gods, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. C: 2 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due God s name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. L: 3 The voice of the Lord is upon the waters; the God of glory thunders; the Lord is upon the mighty waters. C: 4 The voice of the Lord is a powerful voice; the voice of the Lord is a voice of splendor. L: 5 The voice of the Lord breaks the cedar trees; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon; C: 6 the Lord makes Lebanon skip like a calf, and Mount Hermon like a young wild ox. L: 7 The voice of the Lord bursts forth in lightning flashes. C: 8 The voice of the Lord shakes the wilderness; the Lord shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. L: 9 The voice of the Lord makes the oak trees writhe and strips the forests bare. and in the temple of the Lord all are crying, Glory! C: 10 The Lord sits enthroned above the flood; the Lord sits enthroned as king forevermore. L: 11 O Lord, give strength to your people; give them, O Lord, the blessings of peace. 7

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The congregation stands to welcome the gospel. ELW pg.216 Matthew 3:13-17 P: The Gospel according to Matthew, the 3rd chapter. C: Glory to you, O Lord. 13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14 John would have prevented him, saying, I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me? 15 But Jesus answered him, Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfill all righteousness. Then he consented. 16 And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased. The Word of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON SONG OF THE DAY As with Gladness Men of Old ELW # 302 8

RESPONSE TO THE WORD APOSTLES CREED A: Living together in trust and hope we confess our faith. C: I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE P: Called to be a light to the nations, let us pray for God s justice, peace, and healing. Pour out your Spirit of unity, triune God. Renew our lives in the promises of baptism. Hold us together in the oneness of the body of Christ. Empower us to be one as you are one. Hear us, O God. C: Your mercy is great. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Son. He is your Light, shining in our darkness And revealing to us your mercy and might. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people.
