FULL TEXT Worship Celebration: April 22, 2018 9:15 a.m. (CONTEMPORARY) EPWORTH: a United Methodist Church 4 th Sunday of Easter (Year B) Today, we begin a sermon series entitled, And Are We Yet Alive! We ask the question, How did this ragtag group of nobodies from a politically powerless country develop into a force that changed the values of the Mediterranean world? We examine the early Christian Church as found in Acts of the Apostles to discover the qualities and vision that empowered this transformation. On this Sunday, we look again at the Apostles Peter, Paul and Mary (yes, she was a valued disciple of Jesus) and the roles they played in this transformation From Fear to Function. All are welcome at Epworth and your participation truly makes a difference. EPWORTH a United Methodist Church 19285 Holland Glade Road Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971 (302) 227-7743 www.eumcrb.org VISION: Exploring Faith, Embracing Community MISSION: Inviting All, Finding Your Place, Connecting to God, Demonstrating Care WE GATHER IN COMMUNITY Praise Gathering Praise to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Our God and our King; To Him we will sing. In His great mercy He has given us life; Now we can be called the children of God. Great is the love that the Father has given us; He has delivered us, He has delivered us! CHILDREN OF GOD Children of God, sing your song and rejoice for the love that He has given us all. Oh, children of God by the blood of His son, we have been redeemed, and we can be called children of God, children of God. The mystery is revealed to the universe; The Father above has proven His love. Now we are free from the judgment that we deserve,

So we are called the children of God. Great is the love that the Father has given us; He has delivered us, He has delivered us! {Refrain} Bridge: We are the saints, we are the children, We ve been redeemed, we ve been forgiven; We are the sons and daughters of our God. (Repeat 2x, Refrain) Tag: Children of God! Children of God. (Bridge 2x) 1 Greeting, Sharing the Mission & Ministry of Epworth *Passing the Peace *Singing in Praise In my wrestling, and in my doubts, in my failures, You won t walk out. Your great love will lead me through; You are the peace in my troubled sea. Whoa, oh, You are the peace in my troubled sea. MY LIGHTHOUSE In the silence, You won t let go. In the questions, Your truth will hold. Your great love will lead me through; You are the peace in my troubled sea. Whoa, oh, You are the peace in my troubled sea. My Lighthouse, my Lighthouse shining in the darkness, I will follow You! Oh My Lighthouse, my Lighthouse, I will trust the promise: You will carry me safe to shore, safe to shore, safe to shore, safe to shore. I won t fear what tomorrow brings. With each morning, I ll rise and sing. My God s love will lead me through; You are the peace in my troubled sea. Whoa, oh, You are the peace in my troubled sea. Chorus} Bridge: Fire before us, You re the brightest. You will lead us through the storms. (Repeat 4X Chorus) 2 Children s Celebration WE PREPARE FOR THE WORD AT THE CROSS (LOVE RAN RED) There s a place where mercy reigns and never dies. There s a place where streams of grace flow deep and wide, where all the love I ve ever found comes like a flood, comes flowing down. Vicky Rev. Vicky Starnes

At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life. I m in awe of You, I m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. There s a place where sin and shame are powerless, where my heart has peace with God and forgiveness, where all the love I ve ever felt comes like a flood, comes flowing down. At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life. I m in awe of You, I m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You. We Engage the Word Lesson I John 3:16-24 Janet Taylor-Smith We know love by this, that he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay down our lives for one another. How does God s love abide in anyone who has the world s goods and sees a brother or sister in need and yet refuses help? Little children, let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action. And by this we will know that we are from the truth and will reassure our hearts before him whenever our hearts condemn us; for God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. Beloved, if our hearts do not condemn us, we have boldness before God; and we receive from him whatever we ask, because we obey his commandments and do what pleases him. And this is his commandment, that we should believe in the name of his Son Jesus Christ and love one another, just as he has commanded us. All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us. *Gospel Lesson John 10:11-18 I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand, who is not the shepherd and does not own the sheep, sees the wolf coming and leaves the sheep and runs away and the wolf snatches them and scatters them. The hired hand runs away because a hired hand does not care for the sheep. I am the good shepherd. I know my own and my own know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father. And I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that do not belong to this fold. I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. So there will be one flock, one shepherd.

For this reason the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father. Brothers and Sisters, This is the Word of God for the People of God. AT THE CROSS (LOVE RAN RED) (CONT) Here my hope is found, here on holy ground. Here I bow down, here I bow down. Here, arms open wide, here You saved my life. Here I bow down, here I bow. At the cross, at the cross I surrender my life. I m in awe of You, I m in awe of You. Where Your love ran red and my sin washed white, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, I owe all to You, Jesus. Savior of the world. Jesus, Savior of the world. Jesus, Savior of the world. Jesus. 3 Thanks be to God Sermon From Fear to Function Rev. GOD IS ON THE MOVE Anytime a heart turns from darkness to light; anytime temptation comes and someone stands to fight; anytime somebody lives to serve and not be served, I know, I know, I know, I know: God is on the move, on the move, Hallelujah! God is on the move in many mighty ways. God is on the move, on the move, Hallelujah! God is on the move, on the move today. Anytime in weakness someone falls upon their knees or dares to speak the truth that sets us free; anytime the choice is made to stand upon the Word, I know, I know, I know, I know: {Refrain} I see a generation standing on the truth. In each and ev ry nation, God is on the move. Anytime the Gospel stirs a searching soul, and someone says, Send me. Here I go. I know, I know, I know, I know: (refrain 2X; bridge) 5 Joys & Concerns (Mics Go Out Today) Vicky Morning Prayer The Lord s Prayer (sung responsively) FWS 2278 *Benediction We Are Sent into the World *Sending Song WE BELIEVE In this time of desperation, when all we know is doubt and fear, there is only one foundation: we believe, we believe. In this broken generation, when all is dark, you help us see. There is only one salvation: we believe, we believe. Glenn

We believe in God the Father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and He s given us new life. We believe in the Crucifixion. We believe that He conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and He s coming back again. We believe. So, let our faith be more than anthems, greater than the songs we sing. In our weakness and temptations, we believe, we believe! {Refrain} Let the lost be found, and dead be raised; in the here and now let love invade. Let the church live loud! Our God will save. We believe! We believe! And the gates of hell will not prevail, for the power of God has torn the veil. Now we know Your love will never fail. We believe! We believe! We believe in God the Father. We believe in Jesus Christ. We believe in the Holy Spirit, and He s given us new life. We believe in the Crucifixion. We believe that He conquered death. We believe in the resurrection, and He s coming back, He s coming back again! He s coming back again! We believe! We believe! 6 *Please stand as you are able.
