1 Dvorak: Symphony No.8 - ISAIAH, PART II Required Recording: Album on Amazon with Symphony No.9 The Budapest Festival Orchestra - Iván Fischer, Conducting Phillips Recording The First Movement Who Has Believed Our Report? (Isaiah 49:8-14) [:00] Thus saith the Lord, In an acceptable time have I heard you, and in a day of salvation have I helped you, and I will preserve you and give you for a covenant of the people to establish the earth, to cause to inherit the desolate heritages, that you may say to the prisoners, go forth; to them that are in darkness, show yourselves. They shall feed in the ways, and their pastures shall be in all high places. They shall not hunger nor thirst, neither shall the heat nor sun smite them, for he that has mercy on them shall lead them, even by the springs of water shall he guide them. [:42] And I will make all my mountains a way, and my highways shall be exalted. Behold, these shall come from far, and lo, these from the north and from the west, and these from the land of Sinim. [1:25] Sing, O heavens, and be joyful, O earth, and break forth into singing, O mountains, [1:59] for the Lord has comforted his people, and will have mercy upon his afflicted. But Zion said, The Lord has forsaken me, and my Lord has forgotten me. (51:6-7, 9a-11) [2:12] Lift up your eyes to the heavens and look upon the earth beneath. For the heavens shall vanish away like smoke, and the earth shall wax old like a garment, and they that dwell therein shall die in like manner, but my salvation shall be forever, and my righteousness shall not be abolished. Hearken to me, you that know righteousness, the people in whose heart is my law. Fear not the reproach of men, neither be afraid of their revilings. [3:03] Awake, awake! Put on strength, O arm of the Lord. Awake as in the ancient days, in the generations of old. [3:38] Are you not it which has dried the sea, the waters of the great deep that has made the depths of the sea a way for the ransomed to pass over? Therefore, the redeemed of the Lord shall return and come with singing to Zion, and everlasting joy shall be upon their head. They shall obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and mourning shall flee away. (51:15-16) ET [4:03] But I am the Lord your God that divided the sea, whose waves roared. The Lord of hosts is his name. And I have put my words in your mouth, and I have covered you in the shadow of my hand, that I may plant the heavens and lay the foundations of the earth and say unto Zion, You are my people.

2 (52:7,9-10) [4:42] How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that brings good tidings, that publishes peace, that brings good tidings of good, that publishes salvation, that saith to Zion, Your God Reigns! [5:26] Break forth into joy, sing together you waste places of Jerusalem, for the Lord has comforted his people. [5:34] He has redeemed Jerusalem. The Lord has made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations, and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. (53:1-7) [7:31] Who has believed our report? And to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant and as a root out of a dry ground. He has no form nor comeliness, and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief, and we hid as it were our faces from him. He was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he has born our griefs and carried our sorrows, yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God and afflicted. [8:10] But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities. The chastisement of our peace was upon him, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way, and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. [8:44] He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth. He is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth. fine The Second Movement He Bore the Sins of Many (Isaiah 53:8-12) [:39] He was taken from prison and from judgment, and who shall declare his generation? For he was cut off out of the land of the living; for the transgression of my people was he stricken. He made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death, because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him. He has put him to grief. When you shall make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed. He shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. [1:23] He shall see of the travail of his soul and shall be satisfied. By his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many, for he shall bear their iniquities. Therefore, will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he has poured out his soul to death, and he was numbered with the transgressors. He bare the sins of many and made intercession for the transgressors. (55:1-4, 6-13)

[2:25] Ho, everyone that thirsts, come to the waters, and he that has no money, come, buy, and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Wherefore do you spend money for that which is not bread? And your labor for that which satisfies not? Hearken diligently to me, and eat that which is good, and let your soul delight itself in fatness. (+) [3:01] Incline your ear and come unto me. Hear, and your soul shall live, and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. Seek the Lord while he may be found. Call upon him while he is near. Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return to the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. [3:35] For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. As the rain and snow come down from heaven and return not thither but water the earth and makes it bring forth and bud, so shall my word be that goes forth out of my mouth. [5:03] It shall not return to me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. For you shall go out with joy and be led forth with peace. The mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. (56:1, 58:1, 6-9a) [5:34] Thus saith the Lord, Keep judgment, and do justice, for my salvation is near to come, and my righteousness to be revealed. Cry aloud, spare not, lift up your voice like a trumpet and show my people their transgressions and the house of Jacob their sins. Is not this the fast that I have chosen? To loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free and that you break every yoke? Is it not to deal your bread to the hungry and that you bring the poor that are cast out to your house? When you see the naked, that you cover him, and that you hide not yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth as the morning and your health shall spring forth speedily, and your righteousness shall go before you. The glory of the Lord shall be your reward. Then shall you call, and the Lord shall answer. You shall cry, and he shall say, Here I am. (59:1-2, 14, 16, 19-21) [6:49] Behold, the Lord s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, neither his ear heavy that it cannot hear. 3

[7:57] But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hidden is face from you that he will not hear. And judgment is turned away backward, and justice stands afar off, for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter. And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor. Therefore his arm brought salvation to him, and his righteousness, it sustained him. So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lord shall lift up a standard against him. [8:55] And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and to them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord. As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord. My spirit that is upon you, and my words which I have put in your mouth shall not depart out of your mouth, nor out of the mouth of your seed, nor out of the mouth of your seed s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and forever. fine The Third Movement: Your Light Is Come (Isaiah 60:1-3, 19; 61:1-3, 10a) [:34] Arise, shine, for your light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon you. [1:17] For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people, but the Lord shall arise upon you, and his glory shall be seen upon you. And the Gentiles shall come to your light, and kings to the brightness of your rising. [1:35] The sun shall be no more your light by day, neither for brightness shall the moon give light to you, but the Lord shall be to you an everlasting light, and your God your glory. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the meek. [2:10] He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and the opening of the prison to them that are bound, to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of vengeance of our God, to comfort all that mourn, to appoint to them that mourn in Zion, to give to them beauty for ashes. [3:08] To give to them the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness, that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. (+) [4:02] I will greatly rejoice in the Lord. My soul shall be joyful in my God, for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation. (63:7, 9b) [4:46] I will mention the loving kindnesses of the Lord and the praises of the Lord, according to all that the Lord has bestowed on us and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he has bestowed on them, according to his mercies and according to the multitude of his loving kindnesses. [5:20] In his love and in his pity he redeemed them, and he bare them and carried them all the days of old. 4

The Fourth Movement: I Will Put My Spirit Upon Him (64:1, 4, 8) [:19] Oh, that you would rend the heavens; that you would come down; that the mountains might flow down at your presence. [:28] For since the beginning of the world men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, neither has the eye seen, O God beside you, what he has prepared for him that waits for him. But now, O Lord, you are our father. We are the clay, and you our potter, and we all are the work of your hand. (66:1-2) [:54] Thus saith the Lord, Heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool. Where is the house that you build unto me? And where is the place of my rest? For all those things has my hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord, but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit and trembles at my word. (Psalm 8:1, 3-9) [2:17] O Lord our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth, who has set your glory above the heavens. When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have ordained, what is man that you are mindful of him? And the Son of Man that you visit him? For you have made him a little lower than the angels, and have crowned him with glory and honor. You make him to have dominion over the works of your hands. You have put all things under his feet. O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is your name in all the earth! (Matthew 12:9-21) [3:14] Jesus went into the synagogue, and behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath days?, that they might accuse him. [5:07] And he said to them, What man shall there be among you that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it and lift it out? [5:16] How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath days. Then he said to the man, Stretch forth your hand.. And he stretched it forth, and it was restored whole, like as the other. Then the Pharisees went out and held a council against him, how they might destroy him. But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence, and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all. [6:01] Behold my servant, whom I have chosen, my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased. [6:08] I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall show judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets. And in his name shall the Gentiles trust. 5

(Matthew 20:17-19) ET [6:26] Jesus, going up to Jerusalem, took the twelve disciples apart in the way, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be betrayed to the chief priests and to the scribes, and they shall condemn him to death, and shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock and to scourge, and to crucify him, and the third day he shall rise again. (24:3-5, 29-35) [7:29] As Jesus sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be, and what shall be the sign of your coming and of the end of the world? And Jesus said to them, Take heed that no man deceive you, for many shall come in my name saying, I am Christ and shall deceive many. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken; and then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven. [8:31] Then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. [9:03] Now learn a parable of the fig tree: When his branch is yet tender and puts forth leaves, you know that summer is nigh. So likewise you, when you shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at the doors. Verily I say to you, this generation shall not pass till all these things be fulfilled. Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away. fine 6
