The Lord s Prayer: Seasons for Standing Up to Evil

Our Savior Lutheran Church Mankato, Minnesota. The Sixth Sunday after the Epiphany February 17, 2019

Transcription:

August 20, 2017 10:00 AM Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. (Ephesians 6:13) Prayer Before Worship: Heavenly Father, thank You for bringing me here to worship. Help me to listen as You speak to me through Your Word. Help me to honor You with my thoughts. Help me to glorify You with my words. In Jesus name, Amen. Opening Song: A Mighty Fortress is Our God 1. A mighty fortress is our God, A sword and shield victorious; He breaks the cruel oppressor s rod And wins salvation glorious. The old satanic foe Has sworn to work us woe With craft and dreadful might He arms himself to fight. On earth he has no equal. 3. Though hordes of devils fill the land All threat ning to devour us, We tremble not, unmoved we stand; They cannot over-pow r us. Let this world s tyrant rage; In battle we ll engage. His might is doomed to fail; God s judgment must prevail! One little word subdues him. 2. No strength of ours can match his might. We would be lost, rejected. But now a champion comes to fight, Whom God Himself elected. You ask who this may be? The Lord of hosts is He, Christ Jesus, mighty Lord, God s only Son, adored. He holds the field victorious. Invocation & Opening Sentences P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are gathered today as God s own people. Through faith we become God s own children, and in baptism He claims us as His own, placing His holy name on each one of us. C: We have come to worship our Father in Heaven! P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are gathered today as God s own people. We were sinful from birth, selfish, and separated from God. Yet God chose to make us His own, and so He sent His Son, Jesus, for each one of us. C: We have come to worship our Savior, Jesus! P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are gathered today as God s own people. There is not a one of us who could stand before God with a clear conscience. We remain a people who sin daily in thought, word, and deed, and yet God has given us His spirit to overcome the sin in our lives, day in and day out. C: We have come to worship the Spirit of God who makes us holy! P: Brothers and sisters in Christ, we are gathered today as God s own people. It is God who has brought us here. God who has bound us together through His Son. It is God who saves, God who makes us holy, and God who forgives our sins. God has loved us lavishly. He has given us daily blessings too numerous to count. More than that, He has given us His Son, His Spirit, and so Himself. We gather as God s own people in His awesome name: C: In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. 1 4. God s Word forever shall abide, No thanks to foes, who fear it; For God Himself fights by our side With weapons of the Spirit. Were they to take our house, Goods, honor, child, or spouse, Though life be wrenched away, They cannot win the day. The Kingdom s our forever.

Confession P: If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C: But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. P: Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C: Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C: Amen. Song of Praise: Amazing Grace, My Chains Are Gone 1. Amazing Grace how sweet the sound That saved a wretch like me I once was lost but now am found Was blind but now I see 2. T was grace that taught my heart to fear And grace my fears relieved How precious did that grace appear The hour I first believed Refrain My chains are gone, I ve been set free My God my Savior has ransomed me And like a flood, His mercy reigns Unending love, Amazing Grace 3. The Lord has promised good to me His Word my hope secures He will my shield and portion be As long as life endures Refrain 4. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow The sun forbear to shine But God who called me here below Will be forever mine Will be forever mine You are forever mine Old Testament Reading: Isaiah 59: 15b-21 Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey. The LORD looked and was displeased that there was no justice. He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm worked salvation for him, and his own righteousness sustained him. He put on righteousness as his breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on his head; he put on the garments of vengeance and wrapped himself in zeal as in a cloak. According to what they have done, so will he repay wrath to his enemies and retribution to his foes; he will repay the islands their due. From the west, men will fear the name of the LORD, and from the rising of the sun, they will revere his glory. For he will come like a pent-up flood that the breath of the LORD drives along. "The Redeemer will come to Zion, to those in Jacob who repent of their sins," declares the LORD. "As for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD. "My Spirit, who is on you, and my words that I have put in your mouth will not depart from your mouth, or from the mouths of your children, or from the mouths of their descendants from this time on and forever," says the LORD. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. New Testament Reading: Ephesians 6: 10-18 (Sermon Text) Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly 2

realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. P: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Gospel: Matthew 4: 1-11 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. The tempter came to him and said, "If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread." Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.'" Then the devil took him to the holy city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is written: "'He will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is also written: 'Do not put the Lord your God to the test.'" Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. "All this I will give you," he said, "if you will bow down and worship me." Jesus said to him, "Away from me, Satan! For it is written: 'Worship the Lord your God, and serve him only.'" Then the devil left him, and angels came and attended him. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You O, Christ. Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from thence he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Sermon Song: Lord Jesus Christ the Children s Friend 1. Lord Jesus Christ, the children s friend To each of them Your presence send; Call them by name and keep them true In loving Faith, dear Lord, to You. 2. In Christian homes, Lord, let them be Your blessing to their family; Let Christian schools Your work extend In living truth as You intend. 3. That caring parents, gracious Lord, And faithful teachers find reward In leading these, to whom You call, To find in Christ their all in all. 4. For by Your Word we clearly see That we have sinned continually; But show us too, forgiving Lord, Your saving Gospels great reward. 5. That all of us, Your children dear, By Christ redeemed, may Christ revere; Lead us in joy that all we do Will witness to our love for You. 6. Then guard and keep us to the end, Secure in You, our gracious friend, That in Your heav nly family We sing Your praise eternally. Sermon: Here I Stand Pastor Carl Lehenbauer 3

Offering Installation/Rededication of Trinity Faculty Prayers: P: Let us now pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus, and for all people according to their needs: P: Almighty God, we celebrate Your presence among us. We celebrate the blood of Your Son, that unites us as Your people. We celebrate His resurrection and our eternal life. We celebrate the gift of Your Holy Spirit and our call into Your service. For these awe-inspiring gifts, C: We thank you, Lord. P: For the thousands of children who have grown in their faith through our school and our children s ministries, C: We thank you, Lord. P: For pastors and teachers You have called into our midst and for church workers You have called from our midst into Your service, P: For friends who have worshipped in this community for an entire lifetime and for the brothers and sisters You have brought here only recently, P: For the hundreds of Trinity s members who give of their time, talents and treasure to serve in this congregation, and for hundreds of Trinity s members who do the same in this community, P: For enabling us to grow in Your Word, to serve in Your world, and to join in Your mission, P: Almighty God, we do give You thanks and praise for all You do for us and through us in this congregation. As Your forgiven children, we beg for Your blessing on us as we carry out the work that You have called us to. We pray especially for...confident of Your loving care, we lay these and all of our concerns at the feet of Jesus, who taught us to pray, C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction P: May the Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor, and give you peace, C: Amen. Closing Song: Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow (Please Stand) Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heav nly host: Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. FOLLOWING TODAY S SERVICE Ice Cream Social Sponsored by: Trinity Historical Society You are invited to bring a picnic lunch or just come to enjoy the Historical Site (All 12 buildings open!) From the Business Manager s Desk "My, how times have changed.... " It seems like we have all heard parents and grandparents utter those words at one point or another. Change, or progress, can often be for the ultimate good, but it can also be received at the inception, as devastating to society. Sometimes, however, there can be humor is seeing how history reacted to those things we take for granted today. Consider, for example, British wool merchant Jonas Hanway, who tried to walk the streets of London in the mid-18th century with an umbrella. Being the first time they had seen this oddly shaped accessory, stunned onlookers pelted him with "rubbish" and even tried to run him over with their carriages and buggies. Today, Jonas is remembered as a courageous innovator, but in his day, he was thought of as a foolish rebel. May the light we shine, today, regardless of how it is received or perceived, reflect what God has done and who He is, to those around us. And one more thing.... they are calling for rain. Better grab that umbrella. Learning, Coping, and Surviving as an Alzheimer's Caregiver On Wednesday, September 13th at 6:00 PM, Trinity will welcome guest speaker, former WI Gov.
