----------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------- Order of Worship June 10, 2018 Reflection All money, talent, health, power, and pleasure in the world are God's. But the greatest treasure he can give us is life in his presence. - Tim Keller Prelude As worship begins, please silence your electronic devices. Call To Worship Psalm 108 Leader: My heart is steadfast, O God! I will sing and make melody with all my being! People: Awake! I will awaken the dawn! Leader: I will praise you LORD, among the nations; I will sing of you among the peoples. People: For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies! Song Better is One Day How lovely is Your dwelling place, 1

O Lord Almighty. For my soul longs and even faints for You. For here my heart is satisfied Within Your presence. I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings. Chorus (x2): Better is one day in Your courts, Better is one day in Your house, Better is one day in Your courts, Than thousands elsewhere. One thing I ask and I would seek: To see Your beauty, To find You in the place Your glory dwells. (Repeat) (Chorus x2) My heart and flesh cry out For You, the Living God. Your Spirit's water to my soul. I've tasted and I've seen, Come once again to me. I will draw near to You. I will draw near to You. (Chorus x2) Prayer of Adoration O merciful Lord, you are our refuge and strength: by your power you protect us from the ways of this world, by your grace you sustain us through all 2

adversity and temptation, and for your glory you will bring us into everlasting peace. To you be all honor, all praise and dominion, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, One God for all eternity. Amen. Affirmation of Faith The Heidelberg Catechism, Question 32 Minister: Why are you called a Christian? All: Because by faith I am a member of Christ and so I share in his anointing. I am anointed to confess his name, to present myself to him as a living sacrifice of thanks, to strive with a good conscience against sin and the devil in this life, and afterward to reign with Christ over all creation for all eternity. Gloria Patri Glory be to the Father, And to the Son, And to the Holy Ghost! As it was in the beginning, Is now and ever shall be: World without end, Amen, Amen! Prayer of Confession Almighty God, we confess that we are often swept up in the tide of our generation. We have failed in our calling to be your holy people, a people set apart for your divine purpose. We live 3

more in apathy born of fatalism than in passion born of hope. We are moved more by private ambition than by social justice. We dream more of privilege and benefits than of service and sacrifice. We try to speak in your name without relinquishing our glories, without nourishing our souls, without relying wholly on your grace. Help us to make room in our hearts and lives for you. By your Holy Spirit, forgive us, revive us, and reshape us in your image. Amen. Private Confession Song Approach My Soul, the Mercy Seat Approach my soul, the mercy seat Where Holy One and helpless meet There fall before my Judge s feet Thy promise is my only plea, O God Send wings to lift the clutch of sin You who dwell between the cherubim From war without and fear within Relieve the grief from the shoulders of crumbling men Chorus: O God, pour out Your mercy to me My God, oh what striking love to bleed. 4

Fashion my heart in Your alchemy With the brass to front the devil's perjury And surefire grace my Jesus speaks I must; I will; I do believe, Oh Lord. (Chorus) Words of Pardon and Comfort Lamentations 3:22-23 The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; Great is his faithfulness! Song Great is Thy Faithfulness Great is thy faithfulness, O God my Father; there is no shadow of turning with thee; thou changest not, thy compassions, they fail not; as thou hast been thou forever wilt be. Refrain: Great is thy faithfulness! Great is thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; all I have needed thy hand hath provided. Great is thy faithfulness, Lord, unto me! Summer and winter and springtime and harvest sun, moon, and stars in their courses above join with all nature in manifold witness to thy great faithfulness, mercy, and love. (Refrain) 5

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth, thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide, strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside! (Refrain) (Children through Kindergarten are dismissed for Children s Church; they will return for Communion.) Prayer of Intercession (Concluded by the Lord s Prayer) Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen. High Desert Highlights See Announcements on page 16 Offertory Scripture Hebrews 10:1-18 10 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near. 2 Otherwise, would they not have 6

ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins? 3 But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year. 4 For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. 5 Consequently, when Christ came into the world, he said, Sacrifices and offerings you have not desired, but a body have you prepared for me; 6 in burnt offerings and sin offerings you have taken no pleasure. 7 Then I said, Behold, I have come to do your will, O God, as it is written of me in the scroll of the book. 8 When he said above, You have neither desired nor taken pleasure in sacrifices and offerings and burnt offerings and sin offerings (these are offered according to the law), 9 then he added, Behold, I have come to do your will. He does away with the first in order to establish the second. 10 And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. 11 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet. 14 For by a 7

single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified. 15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying, 16 This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds, 17 then he adds, I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more. 18 Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin. Sermon: Dan Rose Hope for Imperfect People Rev. Song: Done Not What My Hands Have Not what my hands have done Can save my guilty soul; Not what my toiling flesh has borne Can make my spirit whole. Not what I feel or do Can give me peace with God; Not all my prayers, And sighs and tears 8

Can bear my awful load. Thy work alone, O Christ, Can ease this weight of sin Thy blood alone O Lamb of God, Can give me peace within. Thy love to me O God, Not mine, O Lord, to Thee Can rid me of This dark unrest, And set my spirit free! Thy grace alone, O God, To me can pardon speak; Thy power alone O Son of God, Can this sore bondage break. No other work, save Thine, No other blood will do, No strength save that, Which is divine, Can bear me safely through. I bless the Christ of God; I rest on love divine; And with unfaltering lip and heart, I call this Savior mine. His cross dispels each doubt, I bury in His tomb My unbelief, 9

And all my fear, Each lingering shade of gloom. I praise the God of grace, I trust His truth and might He calls me His, I call Him mine, My God, my joy, my light Tis He Who saveth me, And freely pardon gives I love because He loveth me, I live because He lives! Celebration of the Lord s Supper This is a time for all people to seek the Lord. For Christians, the Lord s Supper (also called Communion or The Eucharist, which means thanksgiving ) is a time to meet with their Savior by faith, to be strengthened and renewed by Him as they eat the bread and drink the elements. All baptized Christians who trust in Christ alone as their Savior and Lord, belong to a church that embraces the gospel, are at 10

peace with their fellow neighbor, and seek strength and grace to live more faithfully to Christ, are invited to participate. If you are not a Christian, or if you are not prepared to share in this meal, we encourage you to spend this time in prayer (see Prayers on page 15) and to consider more deeply your relationship to Jesus Christ. We also ask that children who have not yet publicly professed their faith in Christ refrain from partaking until doing so. Both wine (red) and grape juice (white) are offered in each serving tray. Words of Institution Memorial Acclamation Minister: Therefore we proclaim the mystery of the faith: All: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again! Minister: Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. All: Therefore let us keep the feast. Minister: The gifts of God for the people of God. Communion Song Amazing Grace (My Chains are Gone) Amazing grace, How sweet the sound, That saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now I'm found, 11

Was blind, but now I see. Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appear, The hour I first believed. Chorus: My chains are gone. I've been set free, My God, my Savior has ransomed me. And like a flood His mercy reigns, Unending love, amazing grace. The Lord has promised good to me, His word my hope secures. He will my shield and portion be, As long as life endures. (Chorus) The earth shall soon dissolve like snow, The sun forbear to shine. But God, Who called me here below, Will be forever mine, Will be forever mine. You are forever mine. Prayer of Thanksgiving We thank you, O God, that through Word and sacrament you have given us your Son, who is the true bread from heaven and food of eternal 12

life. Strengthen us in your service that our daily living may show our thanks, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen. Song All Glory Be To Christ Should nothing of our efforts stand, No legacy survive; Unless the Lord does raise the house, In vain its builders strive. To you who boast tomorrow's gain, Tell me what is your life? A mist that vanishes at dawn; All glory be to Christ! Chorus: All glory be to Christ our king! All glory be to Christ! His rule and reign we ll ever sing, All glory be to Christ! 13

Benediction Postlude His will be done, His kingdom come On earth as is above, Who is Himself our daily bread; Praise Him, the Lord of love. Let living water satisfy The thirsty without price; We'll take a cup of kindness yet; All glory be to Christ! (Chorus) When on the day the great I Am, The faithful and the true, The Lamb who was for sinners slain Is making all things new. Behold, our God shall live with us And be our steadfast light. And we shall e re His people be; All glory be to Christ! (Chorus) 14

All songs used by permission. CCLI License #11101021 Prayers Prayer for Those Searching for Truth: Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and that leads to the life you promise. Amen. Prayer of Belief: Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Amen. 15

Prayer for Those Struggling with Sin: Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen. Prayer of Commitment: Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen. Announcements Next Sunday we will gather for worship at 10am at DRMS.
