* SUNDAY REFLECTIONS * The Birthday of Saint John the Baptist Dear Sisters and Brothers: Did you know that John the Baptist is the only saint, after Jesus himself, whose birth the church celebrates with a solemn feast? We celebrate the birth of John the Baptist on June 24 th, six months before we celebrate the birth of Jesus on December 25 th. The celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas coincides more or less with the winter solstice. Perhaps we can think of it this way - just as the light of the sun begins to make a comeback after darkness has reached its peak, we celebrate the birth of the light of the world. The celebration of the birth of John the Baptist coincides, in contrast, with the summer solstice. Just as the light of the sun begins to decrease, after reaching its peak, we celebrate the birth of the one who said, Jesus must increase, but I must decrease. The question of the neighbors and relations ask of the child John in the gospel reading, What will this child turn out to be? could be asked of any of us. It is a similar question that was asked in 1921 on May 22 when our ancestral founders sought to establish a Catholic Community in Norwood. On June 24, 1921 the first Mass was celebrated at the original Norwood firehouse until the current property was acquired (the former Borough Club) and renovations began immediately. The Church was dedicated to Our Blessed Mother, the Immaculate Conception at the Christmas eve Mass in 1921. As we celebrate our 97th Anniversary this weekend we should pause to give thanks to the manner in which our lay founders, clergy and religious sought to answer at that moment in their own journey of faith, What will I (we) turn out to be?, or to put the question in other terms, Who is God calling me (us) to be? What is God s purpose for my (our) life? God s purpose then for John s life, for our ancestral founders and God s purpose for all our lives in 2018 have a great deal in common. God wants all of us to do what John did, to point out the Savior, to make way for Jesus, to lead others to him by what we say and do!!! John the Baptist, whose birth we celebrate today, has something to teach us about how we might keep faithful to this Godgiven calling - especially as we celebrate our 97th Anniversary. He was a man of the desert, a man of prayer. So maybe during the Summer month we may as individuals, family and friends find our own desert place of prayer so that we may remain true, as our founders were, to our calling to lead others to the Lord. Peace & Blessings, Fr. Leo

* NEWS FROM IMMACULATE CONCEPTION * FAITH FORMATION REGISTRATION FOR THE 2018-2019 SCHOOL YEAR IS NOW OPEN! Registration is open for Grades 1-8. Registration forms can be found on our website or by contacting the Rectory at 201-768-1600. SHARING GOD S BLESSINGS This year s Appeal is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God s generosity and to share the blessings we have been given with those around us. This year, our parish goal is $18,712.00. As of May 29th, our parish has pledged $13,300.00 and we have received $10,900.00. The Annual Appeal provides the poor with food, shelter and clothing; makes religious education, spiritual guidance and CYO programs available for the young; insures the future leadership of the Church with seminarian education and training; and most important, brings Christ s Good News to the people of the Archdiocese. To learn more about the ministries of the Archdiocese of Newark, please visit www.rcan.org/sharing, like us on Facebook at Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Newark or tweet us at @NwkArchdiocese. KIDS CORNER SUMMERTIME Summertime and the living is easy. That s what the favorite old song says. The living may be easy, but often the giving is not. Summer collections often drop significantly in our parish because of vacation travel, sports schedules and other activities that cause parishioners to attend Mass in other parishes. If you would like to make your giving easy and consistent this summer, please consider our electronic giving option. Currently 10 parish families are using this simple and secure way to make and track their parish giving. If you would like to learn more, please contact Canice Cristofoletti at 201-768 -1600 on Thursdays, or check out our website at https:// iccnorwood.org/give-online. Are You Going On Vacation? Many of our parish families are planning to get away for some summer fun and relaxation in the next few months. We pray that your vacation time will be safe and a source of many happy memories. However, please do not take your parish offering with you. Each summer our parish office struggles to juggle the bills as Sunday offerings decrease significantly. If you find that you tend to forget your envelope more often during the less structured weeks of summer, please consider our electronic giving program. Go to https://iccnorwood.org/give-online It s simple! It s safe! And it keeps God at the top of your giving list even when you are away! LIVING STONES CAPITAL CAMPAIGN UPDATE Dear Sisters & Brothers, Praise the Lord for the kindness & sacrificial generosity of all who have made their pledge in this most vital campaign our Parish Family has pledged $130,541.70!!! Our parish goal is $282,483 and we received $94,509.11. At this time our parish rebate is $34,254.56 and our parish family has received 75 pledges. The smallest sacrifices, over time, equal a significant contribution to our campaign. Peace & Blessings, Fr. Leo JOB OPENING - MAINTENANCE WORKER St. Francis De Sales, Lodi, NJ has an opening for a maintenance worker. Must have HS diploma or G.E.D. and valid State driver s license. Dear Sisters and Brothers: * S O S FOR THE CHURCH AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM * A quick update on the status of the Church HVAC System. At this time we have accepted the bid of Sub-Zero HVAC for $58,500.00 and the Office of Property Management of the Archdiocese who will guide us in this project. We will be installing an HVAC system that is known as Hyper-Heat and it will provide AC and Heat. As I mentioned previously I have learned from those who are well versed in HVAC from our parish family that it is advantageous for us to go with the hyper heat system as the new units will offer the parish a significant financial savings with regards to our utilities budget, and there is the bonus of having a back-up system for heat should the boiler fail to function. As a Parish Family I invite you to join me in making a onetime sacrificial gift to off-set the cost for this unexpected project. At this time we have already received over $14,000.00 for this project. Please know of my sincere gratitude to all who have already contributed!!! Please make your check out to ICC Norwood / HVAC Fund. You may either drop off your contribution at the rectory during regular business hours or in the weekly collection. Thank you for assisting your parish and may you and your families have a blessed summer with family, friends and the Lord. Peace and Blessings, Fr.
