ACTS: LIVING GOD S MISSION For whoever wants to save ir life will lose it, but whoever loses ir life for me will save it. Jesus Being a Christian isn't ultimately about selfpreservation. It's not ultimately about knowing that you're going to heaven when you die. Instead, being a Christian is about joining God in what he is doing in world. It means making God's mission central part of your life. This profoundly challenges our deeply engrained notions of autonomy. We fear that if we let someone else (even God!) direct our lives, we will ultimately be crushed. However, take a closer look at Jesus' statement. He promises us if we lose ourselves in God's mission, we will actually find ourselves. God's mission is larger story that we are created to inhabit. And, when we begin to align ourselves with God's work in world, we actually begin to experience a harmony fulfillment that we will not find anywhere else. This year, we will be immersing ourselves in Book of Acts. As we do this, we will be asking ourselves question: How are we being called to live God's mission? Join us as we place ourselves in God's story see where that adventure leads. Let us worship! WORSHIP SERVICES 10:30 am Sundays. FOR REFLECTION It is experiencing grief that makes you go to your resources. It makes you go to your roots as a Christian. It makes you go to gospel. It makes you look at what Jesus has done for you. That s what it does. The grief pushes you toward joy, it enhances joy. The joy kicks on like a heat furnace overwhelms grief, but it s re. I ll go so far as to say if you get into grief, if you get into a time of trouble, you have no tears you have no problem you say, I m just praising God, that is thought control. That s brainwashing. That s way cults operate. That s some kind of psychological control. In Christian life, suffering glory are inextricably bound up toger, because our great forerunner, our great pioneer, our Savior, Jesus Christ, came to glory through suffering. As a result, that is pattern for all of us. Servants, you are not above your master. Tim Keller The destiny of being people of God is a terrible destiny. It means being cast away so that world may be healed. NT Wright If we do not confess to Christ, what would we be? We would end up a compassionate NGO. What would happen would be like when children make s castles n it all falls down. Pope Benedict I'm gonna love you Till wheels come off. Tom Waits

It has been practice of church for thouss of years to have portions of Bible read during worship services. The assumption behind this practice is that we are people who need to be shaped by all of God s word. INTERLUDE Musical interludes are included in our service in order to provide space for reflection worship. CONFESSION OF SIN Make confession to God Lord, sins against God ir neighbor. S T A N D I N G let everyone acknowledge with me ir Far in heaven, forgive us for our fretting. For selfrighteous anger we have nursed coddled towards people who have genuinely wronged us. Forgive us for living as if you will never act. For vigilante justice we pursue through our plotting, sler, gossip, passive aggression. Forgive us for living as if you do not care for us. For orphan spirits we have allowed to reign over us. Forgive us cleanse us. Fill us with your Spirit, that we may walk in your ways, delight in your will. Confession of sin happens within context of relationship, both with God each or. We confess toger, in community, before a gracious God who has given us himself. Confession both acknowledges our need for mercy celebrates its abundance in Christ. (You are invited to personalize your confession as you pray silently.)

RECEIVING OF GRACE Adapted from Peter 3:18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, righteous for unrighteous. He has brought us to God, Having been put to death in flesh but made alive in spirit. PRAYING THE PSALMS Psalm 32 Blessed is one whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Blessed is man against whom LORD counts no iniquity, in whose spirit re is no deceit. For when I kept silent, my bones wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day night your h was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by heat of summer. Selah I acknowledged my sin to you, I did not cover my iniquity; I said, I will confess my transgressions to LORD, you forgave iniquity of my sin. Selah Therefore let everyone who is godly offer prayer to you at a time when you may be found; surely in rush of great waters, y shall not reach him. You are a hiding place for me; you preserve me from trouble; you surround me with shouts of deliverance. Selah Praying through Psalms each week teaches us how to pray, using prayer book of ancient Israel. As we pray, re will be pauses for reflection. I will instruct you teach you in way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you. Be not like a horse or a mule, without understing, which must be curbed with bit bridle, or it will not stay near you. Many are sorrows of wicked, but steadfast love surrounds one who trusts in LORD. Be glad in LORD, rejoice, O righteous, shout for joy, all you upright in heart!

S E R M O N T E X T [17] When we had come to Jerusalem, brors received us gladly. [18] On following day Paul went in with us to James, all elders were present. [19] After greeting m, he related one by one things that God had done among Gentiles through his ministry. [20] And when y heard it, y glorified God. And y said to him, You see, bror, how many thouss re are among Jews of those who have believed. They are all zealous for law, [21] y have been told about you that you teach all Jews who are among Gentiles to forsake Moses, telling m not to circumcise ir children or walk according to our customs. [22] What n is to be done? They will certainly hear that you have come. [23] Do refore what we tell you. We have four men who are under a vow; [24] take se men purify yourself along with m pay ir expenses, so that y may shave ir heads. Thus all will know that re is nothing in what y have been told about you, but that you yourself also live in observance of law. [25] But as for Gentiles who have believed, we have sent a letter with our judgment that y should abstain from what has been sacrificed to idols, from blood, from what has been strangled, from sexual immorality. [26] Then Paul took men, next day he purified himself along with m went into temple, giving notice when days of purification would be fulfilled offering presented for each one of m. [27] When seven days were almost completed, Jews from Asia, seeing him in temple, stirred up whole crowd laid hs on him, [28] crying out, Men of Israel, help! This is man who is teaching everyone everywhere against people law this place. Moreover, he even brought Greeks into temple has defiled this holy place. [29] For y had previously seen Trophimus Ephesian with him in city, y supposed that Paul had brought him into temple. [30] Then all city was stirred up, people ran toger. They seized Paul dragged him out of temple, at once gates were shut. [31] And as y were seeking to kill him, word came to tribune of cohort that all Jerusalem was in confusion. [32] He at once took soldiers centurions ran down to m. And when y saw tribune soldiers, y stopped beating Paul. [33] Then tribune came up arrested him ordered him to be bound with two chains. He inquired who he was what he had done. [34] Some in crowd were shouting one thing, some anor. And as he could not learn facts because of uproar, he ordered him to be brought into barracks. [35] And when he came to steps, he was actually carried by soldiers because of violence of crowd, [36] for mob of people followed, crying out, Away with him!
