Saint Rafael Guizar Valencia Assembly 3018 KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS Our Lady of Guadalupe Province District 2 San Antonio, Texas The Knights of Columbus...a Catholic, Family, Fraternal, Service Organization Volume 01, Issue 06 June 2007 Navigator s Log We have reached the end of our first year (6 months) and our next meeting On June 14 th is very important since we will hold elections for the coming Fraternal year. The slate is not complete since we will have to fill 4 Positions. I urge all those that have agreed to run and all that might be Thinking of running to make sure that they can serve out their term and Attend meetings. Every position is important and the success or failure of Our assembly depends on everyone. The head of any organization is only As good as the foundation that holds him up and supports him. We are looking for someone that can take over the job of supplying light Snacks or light dinners for the assembly. I have lots of simple but delicious Recipes and will share them with whom ever steps forward. We should be recruiting candidates for the 4 th degree and the Explefication will take place on the 23 rd of June. Let me know if you Have anyone interested. We have two men that have achieved honorary membership and that is Sir Knight Ron Berg and Sir Knight John Reichensperger. (continued on page 2) Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 Page 5 Page 6 Captain s Corner Sir Knights, Our Assembly had our first turnout and I would like to say thank you to the nine Sir Knights who attended. They are as follow: SK Larry Zoller, SK Felix Hernandez, SK Don Williams, SK Howard Godwin, SK John Clemens, SK Charles Guerra, SK Gerald Zapata, FN John Thabet and I. If I had to rate our first turnout from one to ten I would rate it about seven to eight. Thank you Sir Knights for turning out since we had short notice. Yet, we did vote to turnout for the mass and the celebration of Reverend Leonard F. Stegman. We celebrated his 90 th birthday and his 64 years a priest. Father Stegman was a Chaplin in the army for about 29 years. Father Stegman served in World War Two, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and I think that he also served in both Iraq wars. Father Stegman was awarded the following: the Purple Heart, two Silver Stars, three Legion of Merit, Bronze Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Korea Service Medal, UN Service Medal, National Defense Medal, Civic Action Honor Medal, plus various other awards. (continued on page 2) FN Log & Captain s Corner Badge Information from Comptroller Color Corps Provincial Award Good of the Order Schedule

Navigator s Log (from page 1) How many noticed the new Papal flag that was carried into all masses On Memorial Day weekend. The flag was purchased by your assembly And we still plan to purchase the American and Texas (thank you Nieves) Flags. Speaking of Nieves, father wanted an American flag for the flagpole. And Nieves had one from a prior request so he supplied it. We need To order a few more so that we have several on hand if needed. See you at 7:00 Pm on the 14 th of June. Vivat Jesus Your Faithful Navigator John Thabet, PFN, PGK Captain s Corner (from page 1) There is no way that we could not turnout for him; Father Stegman represents Patriotism and that is what we are about. All nine of the Sir Knights that turnout had an immediate reward we were invited to delicious dinner. Sorry for the rest of you that did not turnout or could not turnout, you missed a good, free and delicious dinner. Seriously, Sir Knights we need many more of us to turnout for all the events we are asked. I also want to remind all of the Sir Knights, that there will be a fourth degree exemplification on June 23, 2007 in New Braunfels and we need to turnout. Hope to see you all at our Thursday meeting in June. Vivat Jesus Faithful Captain Nieves Gonzales, PGK Faithful Comptroller s Ledger Attached is a picture of the Assembly name badge. The cost of a badge is $11.00 for the slip on and $12.00 for a magnetic badge. If you ordered the slip on badge, you can pick them up at the meeting. The magnetic badge is coming soon. You can If you want to purchase a badge respond to this email with the name you want printed on the badge and which style of badge you want. Then mail your check to me, made payable to "Assembly 3018". Upon receipt of your payment I will order you badge. My address is 3038 Shingle Oak Dr., San Antonio, TX 78247-3731. Brian Nelson, PGK Faithful Comptroller 2

The Fourth Degree is the highest and most prestigious degree within the Knights of Columbus. The primary purpose of your membership is to foster the spirit of patriotism in members and the community at large and encourage active Catholic citizenship. EXEMPLIFICATIONS The next exemplification for 3rd Degree Knights to become 4th Degree Sir Knights will take place in on June 23. As a Fourth Degree Knight you have the opportunity to become part of your assembly's color corps. As a color corps member, you will be recognized widely by the distinctive attire of tuxedo, feathered hat (chapeau), cape and sword. GUIDELINES FOR COLOR CORPS FOURTH DEGREE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS PROCESSION The Color Corps precedes the liturgical procession to form an honor guard in the center aisle. 1. It is recommended that an instrumental prelude accompany the entrance of the Knights. 2. The liturgical procession then passes through the honor guard. The Color Corps closes ranks behind the liturgical procession and proceeds to their reserved pews at the rear of the Church. COMMUNION The Knights do not function as a Color Corps during the celebration of the Eucharist, but join the assembly in that full, conscious, and active participation demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy, #14.) 1. The Color Corps will be the last to receive Communion at the front and center of the liturgical assembly. 2. So that the Knights might have the option of receiving Communion in the hand and from the cup as well, if they wish, it is recommended that they approach Communion without gloves and chapeau. ( Holy Communion has a more complete form as a sign when it is received under both kinds. General Instruction on the Roman Missal, #240.) RECESSION Following the response to the dismissal of the assembly, Thanks be to God, the Color Corps forms an honor guard for the recession. 1. Weather permitting, the Knights proceed directly to the outside of the main entrance where this formation takes place. 2. Weather not permitting, the Knights form an honor guard in the center aisle, closing ranks behind the liturgical procession and following it out of the church. 3

PROVINCIAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE The Our Lady of Guadalupe Provincial Award for Excellence for Assemblies was implemented in October 2004. This new award honors Assemblies for achievement in membership gain, patriotic programming, and compliance with required reports. The award is a beautiful shadow box plaque containing a framed picture of our Lady of Guadalupe, a painted metal Fourth Degree Emblem, and an engraved plate displaying the name of the Assembly and the name of the Faithful Navigator. It is pictured below: In order to win this award, a Fourth Degree Assembly must meet the following four requirements: Achieve the Assembly membership intake goal set by Supreme Assembly. This goal is currently set at 10% of membership on roster as of July 1. File Form 186 (Report of Assembly Officers Elected) with Supreme Council, State Council, Vice-Supreme Master and Master of the Fourth Degree for your District by July 1 File Form 1728 C (Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity) with Supreme Council, State Council, Vice-Supreme Master, and Master of the Fourth Degree for your District by January 31 File Form 2321 (Civic Award Application) with Supreme Council, Vice-Supreme Master, and Master of the Fourth Degree for your District by June 30 and be recognized as a winner of the Civic Award by Supreme Council. These four criteria indicate that an Assembly is actively increasing membership, electing Officers, performing charitable & fraternal activities, and conducting Patriotic Programs each year - the main purposes and activities for a Fourth Degree Assembly. We urge every Assembly to meet these four criteria and have your Assembly recognized as a winner of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Provincial Award for Excellence 4
