take five minutes to feed your faith every day Remove this page from the bulletin and put it where you ll see it each day. Invest just five minutes a day, and your faith will deepen and grow a day at a time. SUNDAY, APRIL 6, 2014 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT; THIRD SCRUTINY OF THE ELECT Take a look at your life The Scrutinies of the third, fourth, and fifth Sundays of Lent are ancient rites that are part of the process that brings those who have asked for Baptism into the church. Though they may seem foreign, they are rooted in human wisdom cultivated over the ages. Examining scrutinizing how you live day to day, you discover areas of your life where you fall short as well as areas where you have been kind and loving. The best support you can offer those who are joining the church is to engage in an honest scrutiny of your own life. In this way the entire faith community is built up. TODAY S READINGS: Ezekiel 37:12-14; Romans 8:8-11; John 11:1-45 (34). If one walks during the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world. MONDAY, APRIL 7 LENTEN WEEKDAY When hypocrisy looks like piety American composer Carlyle Floyd retells the story of the biblical Susannah in his opera set in rural Tennessee. Susannah is accused of bathing naked in a river, a sin in the eyes of Christian men who spy on her. Distraught, Susannah asks her brother, Sam, What s it all about? It s about the way people is made, I reckon, he responds. An how they like to believe what s bad. / How short they are on lovin kindness. / It must make the good Lord sad.... / At seein how men treat one another / An say they re doin it all fer His sake. TODAY S READINGS: Daniel 13:1-9, 15-17, 19-30, 33-62 or 13:41c-62; John 8:1-11 (251). Let the one among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone. TUESDAY, APRIL 8 LENTEN WEEKDAY No complaints, please! Do you ever find yourself complaining about abundance? Too much food, too many t-shirts, too many gadgets, too many events on the calendar! The grumbling of the ungrateful has a long biblical tradition. In the desert years, the Israelites complained about the wretched food they were forced to eat daily. It s shocking to realize they were complaining about manna, once celebrated as bread from heaven and now consumed with contempt! If you re tempted in the upcoming weeks to grumble about so many extra liturgies in church, take a minute to recall what these services are commemorating, and give thanks. TODAY S READINGS: Numbers 21:4-9; John 8:21-30 (252). Why have you brought us up from Egypt to die in this desert, where there is no food or water? WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9 LENTEN WEEKDAY Is your response programmed? Pavlov s dog taught a humbling lesson: how easily behavior can be manipulated and controlled. Ring the dinner bell, you salivate. Pass the donut shop and you reel at the thought of a Bavarian cream. In the biblical book of Daniel, citizens were obliged to worship a statue each time the king s band played the Idolatry Theme Song. Most folks got into the rhythm. Three men said no and wound up in the furnace. Do you trust heaven enough to just say no when everyone around you embraces the patterns of fashion or materialism? TODAY S READINGS: Daniel 3:14-20, 91-92, 95; John 8:31-42 (253). Be ready now to fall down and worship the statue I had made, whenever you hear the sound of the... musical instruments. THURSDAY, APRIL 10 LENTEN WEEKDAY And now for the moment of truth...the big reveal is an important plot device used to add an unexpected twist to a storyline. Examples include Star War s Luke Skywalker hearing the words: I am your father, spoken by Darth Vader, his sworn enemy. Or Breaking Bad s chemistry-teacher-turned-drug-kingpin Walter White telling his wife, I am the one who knocks in response to her concerns about danger at the door. But no reveal in any story ancient or modern is more stunning than when Jesus tells his detractors: Before Abraham came to be, I AM. In that one moment the truth of Jesus full identity is revealed: He and Yahweh (I AM), the God of Israel, are one. And this big reveal comes with an even bigger payoff: life everlasting. TODAY S READINGS: Genesis 17:3-9; John 8:51-59 (254). Whoever keeps my word will never see death. FRIDAY, APRIL 11 MEMORIAL OF STANISLAUS, BISHOP, MARTYR An unimpeachable witness One of the engaging things about saints from centuries ago like Stanislaus (b. 1030) is the legends that spring up about them perhaps not true in a literal way but often carrying kernels of wisdom of a deeper order. Bishop Stanislaus is said to have brought a man who had been dead three years back to life in order to foil a land-grabbing plot of a nefarious king. Given three days to produce a witness to the church s claim on the land, he prayed ceaselessly before calling the seller of the land from the grave to testify on his behalf. The take-away? God hears and responds to your fervent prayers. TODAY S READINGS: Jeremiah 20:10-13; John 10:31-42 (255). If I... perform my Father s works... even if you do not believe me, believe the works. SATURDAY, APRIL 12 LENTEN WEEKDAY Life is more than getting from point A to point B An ancient Greek philosopher said you can t dip your toe in the same river twice. Once a moment in time passes, it s gone for good. Human beings, however, have also recognized time as cyclical. Easter reminds you of that view. It teaches you that life isn t an inexorable forward march toward death. Christians get to step out of linear time, not only at the end of life but during it as well. TODAY S READINGS: Ezekiel 37:21-28; John 11:45-56 (256). Now the Passover... was near, and many went up... to Jerusalem... to purify themselves. 2014 by TrueQuest Communications. Stories of our Faith in Action This bulletin insert tells you the story of an organization that benefitted from Together in Action in 2013. Funds from this year s campaign will benefit similar causes. Recipient Organization: Project Funded: Thank you for your support! Operations Elizabeth House Year Funding Received: 2013 Grant Amount: $ 230,000 Tell us about how your grant impacted your organization and/or your clients: Each year, Elizabeth House - the Diocesan Program providing housing and a life-changing opportunity for young mothers in Southern Alberta without traditional family support receives a large grant from Together in Action to support its operations. In 2013, that grant was $230,000.00. This year was a year of transition and change for the program. Elizabeth House moved into their new permanent home in Tuxedo Park in December. After the past 18 months in their temporary location, the staff is looking forward to 2014 as a new period of revitalization and growth. Despite the elements of transition, Elizabeth House was able to fulfill its mission of offering young mothers the skills they need to build healthy families of their own. This year we were able to serve 13 young women and 7 babies at our Marda Loop location. The long term impact of this program cannot be underestimated. One former resident, who graduated from the program in 2008, recently wrote the staff to say she is working on a degree in social work and that her child is happy and healthy in kindergarten and loves taking Spanish lessons on weekends. This joyful update is the result, in part, of your generosity. Thank you for your support!
