LAST SUNDAY OF THE CHURCH YEAR CHRIST THE KING SUNDAY November 25, 2018 11:00 am AS WE GATHER Today is the Last Sunday of the Church Year. Next week we will turn our attention to Advent and preparations for the celebration of Christ s incarnation. But as we prepare to celebrate Christ s first coming, we also anticipate His second coming. Christ s return in glory is the focus of this service. Jesus calls on His followers to stay awake and remain prepared for His coming. He warns that no one knows the day or the hour of His return. But He promises He is returning and returning soon. PRE-SERVICE Power of the Blood Instrumental WELCOME PREPARATION OPENING SONG Our God Saves Brown/Baloche In the Name of the Father, in the Name of the Son, in the Name of the Spirit, Lord we come; We're gather'd together to lift up Your Name, to call on our Savior, to fall on Your grace; Hear the joyful sound of our offering as Your saints bow down, as Your people sing; We will rise with You, lifted on Your wings, and the world will see that... Our God saves, Our God saves; There is hope, in Your Name; Mourning turns to songs of praise; Our God saves, Our God saves. REPEAT SONG Our God saves. CCLI #219979. Used by permission (Please Stand) INVOCATION SACRAMENT OF HOLY BAPTISM FOR TANNER IAN BERGHOLT LSB 268 In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. OPENING SENTENCES Based on Psalm 93:1 2, 5 The Lord reigns! He is robed in majesty! The world is established. It shall not be moved. God s throne is established from of old. Our God is from everlasting. 1

His decrees are very trustworthy. Holiness befits the Lord s house forevermore. Christ is coming soon. Therefore stay awake and remain prepared. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION (If you would like private confession and absolution, please call the office at (314) 832-5600 to make an appointment with Pastor Clark) Christ is coming again and coming soon. Although we know this, although we have heard His words and warning, we have not always acted as though Christ were coming soon. At times we have grown complacent and lazy, focused on the things of this world rather than on Christ, His Word, and His salvation. As we gather together in the Lord s house, let us consider our failure to live according to His holiness. Heavenly Father, we have not always lived according to Your Word. We have fallen asleep in the comfort of our sins. We have not stayed awake and remained prepared for the return of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Forgive us, renew us, and stir us up so that we might prepare ourselves and others for Christ s return. Because of Jesus Christ s death and resurrection, you are presented blameless before the presence of God. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. To God be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, now and forever. [OR] Seminary Student: In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for His sake God forgives us all our sins. To those who believe in Jesus Christ He gives the power to become the children of God and bestows on them the Holy Spirit. May the Lord, who has begun this good work in us, bring it to completion in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. John 1:12, Philippians 1:6 WORD SALUTATION The Lord be with you. And also with You. PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, so govern our hearts and minds by Your Holy Spirit that, ever mindful of Your glorious return, we may persevere in both faith and holiness of living; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 2

(Please Be Seated) OLD TESTAMENT READING Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 9 As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames; its heels were burning fire. 10 A stream of fire issued and came out from before him; a thousand thousands served him, and ten thousand times ten thousand stood before him; the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.... 13 I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. EPISTLE Revelation 1:4-8 4 John to the seven churches that are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. 8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. Lector: This is the Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (Please Stand) HOLY GOSPEL John 18:33-37 The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighteenth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. 33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered, Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world. 37 Then Pilate said to him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice. This is the Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, O Christ. 3

APOSTLES CREED LSB 207 I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.
