Setting our approach

A mom who cared: Sarah Palin In April, my husband, Todd, and I welcomed our littlest one into the world, a perfectly beautiful baby boy named Trig.

A man who didn t: Nicholas Provenzo Like many, I am troubled by the implications of Alaska governor and Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin s decision to knowingly give birth to a child disabled with Down syndrome....

A man who didn t: Nicholas Provenzo...Given that Palin s decision is being celebrated in some quarters, it is crucial to reaffirm the morality of aborting a fetus diagnosed with Down syndrome (or by extension, any unborn fetus) a freedom that anti-abortion advocates seek to deny.

Seeking our appreciation

For the people of Israel Exodus 1:12, 22 NIV But the more they were oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel.... Then Pharaoh commanded all his people, Every son that is born to the Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every daughter live.

For the parents of Moses Exodus 2:1-3 NIV Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman. The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months....

Exodus 2:1-3 NIV For the parents of Moses... When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.

For the parents of Moses Hebrews 11:23 NIV By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden for three months by his parents, because they saw that the child was beautiful, and they were not afraid of the king's edict.

The style here is significant: Historical narrative

The story here is specific: Details revealing Moses deliverance Moses designated Hebrew Mashah To Draw Out Egypt Mose To give birth

The salvation is seen: It truly occurred Our challenges are real life Our God acts in real life

Seen in a secure release Arranged deliverance

Moses is spared by being cast onto the very Nile that was to drown him, is treated with maternal kindness by the daughter of the very king who had condemned him and to whose descendants he would become a nemesis and is assigned as a responsibility with pay to the one woman in all the world who most wanted the best for him, his own mother. John Durnham

Seen in a secure release Arranged deliverance Ark of deliverance word used of Noah s vessel

Exodus 2:5-8 NIV Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.... Seen in a surprising rescue

Exodus 2:5-8 NIV... When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, This is one of the Hebrews' children.... Seen in a surprising rescue

Exodus 2:5-8 NIV Seen in a surprising rescue... Then his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?...

Exodus 2:5-8 NIV... And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, Go. So the girl went and called the child's mother. Seen in a surprising rescue

And he was brought up for three months in his father's house, and when he was exposed, Pharaoh's daughter adopted him and brought him up as her own son. And Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in his words and deeds.

A Savior to come: Like Moses in title and task Deuteronomy 34:10-12 ESV And there has not arisen a prophet since in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face, 11 none like him for all the signs and the wonders that the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, and for all the mighty power and all the great deeds of terror that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.

A Savior to receive: Greater than Moses in position and promise Philip Ryken The salvation God has accomplished in history becomes our salvation when we receive Jesus by faith. We are called to trust God the way a desperate mother once did when she put her heart in a basket and entrusted it to the God who saves.
