STUDIES IN THE GOSPEL OF JOHN LESSON 21 - JOHN CHAPTER 20 ASSIGNMENT READ John chapter 20 MEMORIZE John 20:30,31 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name KEY THOUGHT Jesus arose! The resurrection is the most important teaching of Christianity No other religion has a risen Savior READ 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 What does 1 Corinthians 15:17,20 tell us about the resurrection? These verses in Corinthians are very clear If Christ was not raised from the dead, your faith is worth nothing and you are still living in your sins 1 Corinthians 15:17 (NLT) What must we believe in our hearts in order to be saved? Romans 10:9 John tells us more about the resurrection of Jesus than he tells us about the crucifixion of Jesus OUTLINE OF JOHN CHAPTER 20 A Jesus arose from the dead, John 20:1-29 1 Mary Magdalene saw the stone rolled away, John 20:1,2 2 Peter and John saw the linen clothes, John 20:3-10 3 Mary Magdalene saw the angels, John 20:11-13 1

4 Mary Magdalene saw Jesus, John 20:14-18 5 The disciples saw Jesus, John 20:19-23 6 The disciples including Thomas saw Jesus, John 20:24-29 B The signs show Jesus is the Christ, John 20:30,31 LOOKING AT JOHN CHAPTER 20 A Jesus arose from the dead, John 20:1-29 1 Mary Magdalene saw the stone rolled away, John 20:1,2 Everyone rested on the Sabbath as the Law said they should rest Early the first day of the week the women went to the grave When did Mary Magdalene come to the grave? John 20:1 it was yet How did Mary Magdalene know where Jesus was buried? Mark 15:47 It says, she beheld This means to look carefully The women took a careful look to see where the body of Jesus was laid Mary Magdalene came to the right grave What did Mary Magdalene see? John 20:1 The was taken from the grave The stone was great and heavy The women wondered who would roll it away Mark 16:4 Who rolled the stone away? Matthew 28:2 The rolled the stone away of the Lord Pilate asked some guards to watch the grave They became as dead men when the angels came The guards could not keep Jesus in the grave They could not keep the stone in place When Mary came to the grave, the stone was rolled away It was not rolled 2

away to let Jesus out The stone was rolled away to let people see that Jesus was gone What did Mary Magdalene think happened to Jesus? John 20:2 Mary thought someone had the of away Whom did Mary tell this news? John 20:2 Simon and (the other disciples) 2 Peter and John saw the linen clothes, John 20:3-10 Mary Magdalene told Peter and John about the empty grave What did Peter and John do? John 20:4 They to the Who could run the fastest? John 20:4 It seems that John was younger than Peter What did John see? John 20:5 He saw the in the grave Did John go into the grave? John 20:5 What did Peter do when he came to the grave? John 20:6 He went the grave Peter was more bold than John What did Peter see? John 20:6,7 He saw clothes in the grave and the which was around the of Jesus The napkin (white cloth) lay in a place by itself It was folded up If someone had stolen the body of Jesus would they have left the linen clothes? Would they have folded up the white cloth which was around the head of Jesus? 3

The body of Jesus was NOT STOLEN The new body of Jesus was different than His old body The new body just came out of the linen clothes Jesus did not have to pull the linen clothes off of His new body The new body could go through the clothes John saw the linen clothes and John 20:8 Some think John believed Jesus arose from the dead Others think John believed the body of Jesus was taken away Jesus had told His disciples many times He would die and would rise again Did Peter and John know that the Scriptures said Jesus must rise from the dead? John 20:9 Where did the disciples go? John 20:10 They went to their 3 Mary Magdalene saw the angels, John 20:11-13 Mary Magdalene had followed the men to the grave Peter and John went home Mary stayed there What did Mary Magdalene do? John 20:11 She (cried) Mary loved Jesus very much Jesus had set her free from seven demons, Mark 16:9 As Mary cried she looked into the grave What did Mary Magdalene see? John 20:12 Where were they sitting? One at the and the other at the where Jesus had lain What did the angel ask Mary Magdalene? John 20:13 Woman? 4

What did Mary answer? John 20:13 and I have him The One Mary Magdalene loved was gone She could not even find His body 4 Mary Magdalene saw Jesus, John 20:14-18 As Mary Magdalene spoke someone stood behind her Who did Mary think it was? John 20:15 the A gardener is the one who takes care of a garden READ John 20:15 What did Mary Magdalene think the gardener had done? John 20:15 She thought he had taken the of away What did she ask the gardener to tell her? he had the body of Jesus What did Mary want to do? She said, Him In her great love for Jesus she did not think HOW she could do it She just wanted this body to be well taken care of What did Jesus say to her? John 20:16 Though Mary was crying she knew His voice Though she thought Jesus was dead, she knew His voice No one else called her in that voice What did Mary Magdalene call Jesus? John 20:16 means Master which She found the One she thought was dead She did not want to lose Him again It seems she wanted to hang onto Jesus What did Jesus tell Mary? John 20:17 : for I am not yet ascended to my : but go to my, 5

and say unto them, and to and unto my Father and your Father; Jesus' words touch me not really meant do not take hold of me Jesus said He had not gone to heaven as yet He still had time to see her Just now she was to tell the disciples that Jesus would ascend (go up) to God Also Mary was to learn that there was going to be a new way of fellowship Up until now they had talked with each other They had seen each other But from now on she would not see Jesus Yet Jesus would be with her He would be with her even though she could not see Him Jesus said He would ascend This means He would go back to God He said, I ascend unto and and to and God Mary went to tell the disciples What was she to tell the disciples? Jesus would Jesus was alive Mary Magdalene saw Jesus She talked to Jesus Jesus talked to her 5 The disciples saw Jesus, John 20:19-23 READ John 20:19 What day of the week was it? the the week of What time of day was it? This was the same day Mary Magdalene saw Jesus Maybe the disciples gathered together to talk about the strange things they heard and saw Were the doors to the room open or shut? Why were the doors shut? The disciples were of the 6

Jesus was crucified Would the Jews want to kill them too? They were afraid Look at verse 19 again It says Jesus came and in the Without opening the doors, Jesus came in The disciples were afraid of the Jews Then Jesus came in with the doors shut What did Jesus say to the disciples? be unto This was the way the Jews greeted each other But this had more meaning Jesus promised them peace They were not to be afraid anymore READ John 20:20 What did Jesus show the disciples? His and His The new body of Jesus was different But He still had wounds in His hands and in His side They knew Jesus!! It says, Then were the, when they the The disciples had left Jesus in the garden Peter had denied Jesus Jesus came to them and said the second time, Peace be unto you In His last words before His death He said, Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you John 14:27 Are we glad to see the Lord? Or is there sin in our lives? Sin in our lives makes us afraid to see the Lord The disciples were glad Jesus gave them His peace BUT He had work for the disciples to do Jesus sent the disciples into the world How did Jesus send the disciples? John 20:21 Jesus was sent into the world to do the work of His Father Jesus came to provide salvation for the people The disciples were sent to tell of this salvation to the people 7

READ John 20:22,23 At this time the Holy Spirit had not been given to the disciples in full power Jesus showed them how He would be given He breathed on them and said, Receive ye the Holy Spirit Whose soever s they are unto them; and whose soever s ye, they are ye Did Jesus give the disciples the power to forgive sins? Can we tell a person, Your sins are forgiven? You tell your friend James about Jesus You tell James that if he repents of his sins Jesus will forgive him James wants to turn away from sin He asks Jesus to forgive him Can you tell James, Your sins are forgiven? James was able to ask Jesus to forgive him because you told him about Jesus We who have accepted Jesus as our Savior, are to tell people that Jesus will forgive their sins When they accept Jesus as their Savior, their sins will be forgiven If they do not put their trust in Jesus as their Savior, their sins are not forgiven A Bible teacher, Rev G Campbell Morgan tells it this way: If a person has sinned and repented of his sin, we can tell that person his sin is forgiven If a person does not want to stop sinning, we can tell him his sin is not forgiven (GC Morgan, The Gospel According to John, pp 320,321 Copyright by Fleming H Revell Company, New York Used by permission) 6 The disciples including Thomas saw Jesus, John 20:24-29 time? Which disciple was not with the other disciples when Jesus came to them the first John 20:24 Thomas was not with the disciples when Jesus appeared to them in the room He came into the room later Thomas was called Didymus which means Twin The disciples told Thomas they had seen the Lord 8

Did Thomas believe them? John 20:25 What did Thomas want to see? John 20:25 The of the nails in the of Jesus He wanted to put his finger into the of His nails, and put his hand into the of Jesus The New Life Testament says it this way, I will not believe until I see the marks made by the nails in His hands I will not believe until I put my finger into the marks of the nails I will not believe until I put my hand into His side (John 20:25) Do you think Thomas was happy that week? READ John 20:26 Eight days later Jesus came to the disciples again Who was with the disciples this time? Were the doors open or shut? How did Jesus come in? Through closed What did Jesus say to the disciples? Then Jesus spoke to Thomas READ John 20:27 READ verse 25 again What did Jesus tell Thomas to do? 1) hither thy finger 2) my hands 3) hither thy hand and thrust (put) it into my side Was this what Thomas wanted to do? Who told Jesus about Thomas? Jesus knew all things He knew what Thomas had said 9

What did Thomas say? John 20:28 and Thomas believed Jesus was God Thomas saw Jesus as His Lord He saw Jesus and he knew it was Jesus Thomas believed because he had seen Jesus Jesus gave a blessing The Bible says, Jesus saith unto him, Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that, and yet have Have we seen Jesus the way the disciples saw Jesus? Do we believe in Jesus? Jesus says then we are blessed We are happy B The signs show Jesus is the Christ, John 20:30,31 Jesus did many signs Did John write about all these signs? John told about some of the signs Why did John write about the ones he wrote about? John 20:31 1) that ye might believe that is the, the of 2) and that believing ye might have How many signs did we study in the Gospel of John? Jesus did that which man could not do Let us look at John 2:18,19 The Jews asked Jesus for a sign What sign did Jesus give them? Destroy this and in This is the greatest of all the signs Jesus gave He was crucified He died His body was destroyed But the third day He rose from the dead He was alive JESUS 10

IS GOD When 1) we believe Jesus is the One sent from God, 2) we believe Jesus died for us, 3) we believe Jesus rose from the dead, WE HAVE EVERLASTING LIFE IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER 1 The rolled the stone away, Matthew 28:1,2 2 Mary Magdalene saw the away, John 20:1 3 Mary Magdalene thought someone had taken the of away, John 20:2 4 and ran to see the grave, John 20:3 They saw the and lying in the grave, John 20:6,7 5 Mary Magdalene cried She looked into the grave and saw, John 20:12 6 Mary Magdalene saw someone behind her She thought he was the Mary Magdalene knew it was when He called her name, John 20:15,16 7 Jesus told Mary Magdalene, Tell my disciples that I to my Father and your Father, to my and, John 20:17 8 The disciples saw in the evening Jesus said, be unto you Thomas was not with the disciples Jesus sent the disciples as God sent Him 11

9 Eight days later Jesus came to the again was with them, John 20:16 10 Jesus said, are they that have and yet John 20:29 11 John wrote about the signs Jesus did that 1) we 2) 12 The greatest sign Jesus gave was that He was crucified and that He rose from the dead Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up John 2:19 13 How we know that Jesus arose from the dead: 1) by the open grave 2) by the grave clothes lying in the grave 3) because the angels said Jesus arose 4) because Jesus showed Himself alive and was seen by people WORDS TO LEARN 1 ascend - to go up 2 linen clothes - cloths wrapped around a dead body 3 proof - that which shows something is true 4 Raboni - Master 5 resurrection - to live again after death when people are raised to life again; when the dead are raised to life again 12

Lesson 21 - Review 1 The rolled the stone away 2 The stone was rolled away (to let Jesus out) (to show the disciples Jesus arose) 3 and ran to the grave to see 4 was the first one to see Jesus 5 The saw Jesus the same evening Jesus said to them, be unto you 6 After 8 days Jesus showed Himself to the disciples again was with them this time 7 Jesus said, are they that have and yet have 8 Write down 4 things which prove Jesus arose 1) the 2) the were lying in the grave 3) the said it 4) showed Himself alive and was seen by people 9 John wrote about the signs of Jesus 1) that we might Jesus is the, the of 2) that we might have 10 What was the greatest sign? 11 Write out John 20:30,31 Studies in the Gospel of John by Joseph F & Helen Pope Copyright, 1978, by Northern Canada Evangelical Mission, Inc Box 3030, Prince Albert, Saskatchewan, Canada Edited 2017 by Helen Pope 13
