Let s continue in our book Desire of Ages, Chapter #51, pages 469-471 Abraham learned of God the greatest lesson ever given to mortal. His prayer that he might see Christ before he should die was answered. He saw Christ; he saw all that mortal can see, and live. By making an entire surrender, he was able to understand the vision of Christ, which had been given him. He was shown that in giving His only-begotten Son to save sinners from eternal ruin, God was making a greater and more wonderful sacrifice than ever man could make. {DA 469.1} Question: What has Abraham learn of God as his prayer was answered that he might see Christ before he should die? And, what was he able to understand by making an entire surrender to God? Answer: He learned the greatest lesson ever given to mortal. He saw Christ; he saw all that mortal can see, and live. And, he was able to understand the vision of Christ, which had been given him. He was shown that in giving His only-begotten Son to save sinners from eternal ruin. Abraham's experience answered the question: Wherewith shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? Shall I come before Him with burnt offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? Micah 6:6, 7. In the words of Abraham, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering, (Genesis 22:8), and in God's provision of a sacrifice instead of Isaac, it was declared that no man could make expiation for himself. The pagan system of sacrifice was wholly unacceptable to God. No father was to offer up his son or his daughter for a sin offering. The Son of God alone can bear the guilt of the world. {DA 469.2} Question: Have the questions stated in Micah 6:6, 7 been answered by Abraham s requested prayer in his experience? And, in the words of Abraham, My son, God will provide Himself a lamb for a burnt offering, how did God beautifully brought it to pass? Answer: Yes! It was declared that no man could make expiation for himself. No father was to offer up his son or his daughter for a sin offering. The Son of God alone can bear the guilt of the world. Through his own suffering, Abraham was enabled to behold the Saviour's mission of sacrifice. But Israel would not understand that which was so unwelcome to their proud hearts. Christ's words concerning Abraham conveyed to His hearers no deep significance. The Pharisees saw in them only fresh ground for caviling. They retorted with a sneer, as if they would prove Jesus to be a madman, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast Thou seen Abraham? {DA 469.3} With solemn dignity Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. {DA 469.4} Silence fell upon the vast assembly. The name of God, given to Moses to express the idea of the eternal presence, had been claimed as His own by this Galilean Rabbi. He had announced Himself to be the self-existent One, He who had been promised to Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from the days of eternity. Micah 5:2, margin. {DA 469.5} Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#239 (7.15.17) Page 2
Question: What did Jesus answer, with solemn dignity? And, why silence fall upon the vast assembly as Jesus announced Himself to be the self-existent One? Answer: Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I AM. And, The name of God, given to Moses to express the idea of the eternal presence, had been claimed as His own by this Galilean Rabbi promised to Israel, whose goings forth have been from of old, from the days of eternity. (3 xs) But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, [though] thou be little among the thousands of Judah, [yet] out of thee shall he come forth unto me [that is] to be ruler in Israel; Micah 5:2 Again the priests and rabbis cried out against Jesus as a blasphemer. His claim to be one with God had before stirred them to take His life, and a few months later they plainly declared, For a good work we stone Thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that Thou, being a man, makest Thyself God. John 10:33. Because He was, and avowed Himself to be, the Son of God, they were bent on destroying Him. Now many of the people, siding with the priests and rabbis, took up stones to cast at Him. But Jesus hid Himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by. {DA 470.1} Question: Why did the priests and rabbis cry out against Jesus as a blasphemer again? And, what did they want to do with Him for avowing Himself to be the Son of God? Answer: His claim to be one with God had before stirred them to take His life, and a few months later they plainly declared, For a good work we stone Thee not; but for blasphemy; and because that Thou, being a man, makest Thyself God. And, they were bent on destroying Him. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. John 1:5 {DA 470.2} As Jesus passed by, He saw a man which was blind from his birth. And His disciples asked Him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.... When He had thus spoken, He spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and He anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay, and said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent). He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. {DA 470.3} Question: What was Jesus response to His disciple s question; Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind? And, what did He do when He had thus spoken and why? Children s Sabbath School _ Lesson#239 (7.15.17) Page 3

Desire of Ages Memory D Volume II John 1:1-5, 9-11 (KJV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, (2 xs) and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life; and the life was the light of men. (2 xs) And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. [That] was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. (2 xs) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, (2 xs) and the Word was God. The same was in the beginning with God. All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. John Chapter 1:1 through-5, 9 through11 It was generally believed by the Jews that sin is punished in this life. Every affliction was regarded as the penalty of some wrongdoing, either of the sufferer himself or of his parents. It is true that all suffering results from the transgression of God's law, but this truth had become perverted. Satan, the author of sin and all its results, had led men to look upon disease and death as proceeding from God,--as punishment arbitrarily inflicted on account of sin. Hence one upon whom some great affliction or calamity had fallen had the additional burden of being regarded as a great sinner. {DA 471.1} Question: What was generally believed by the Jews? And, did this truth become perverted? Answer: They believed that sin is punished in this life that every affliction was regarded as the penalty of some wrongdoing, either of the sufferer himself or of his parents. And, yes! By Satan the author of sin and all its results for it is true that all suffering results from the transgression of God's law. Gather the little ones together! It s Story Time! Our book selection this Sabbath is entitle, Sons and Daughters of God Chapter 5-We are to be Holy as Christ is Holy Be ye holy; for I am holy. 1 Peter 1:16. {SD 155.1} With our limited powers we are to be as holy in our sphere as God is holy in His sphere. {SD 155.2} God expects us to build characters in accordance with the Pattern set before us. We are to lay brick upon brick, adding grace to grace, finding our weak points and correcting them in accordance with the directions given. When a crack is seen in the walls of a mansion, we know that something about the building is wrong. In our character building, cracks are often seen. Unless these defects are remedied, the house will fall when the tempest of trial beats upon it. {SD 155.3} God gives us strength, reasoning power, time, in order that we may build characters on which He can place His stamp of approval. He desires each child of His to build a noble character, by the doing of pure, noble deeds, that in the end He may present a symmetrical structure, a fair temple, honored by man and God. {SD 155.4} In our character building we must build on Christ. He is the sure foundation--a foundation which can never be moved. The tempest of temptation and trial cannot move the building which is riveted to the Eternal Rock. He who would grow into a beautiful building for the Lord must cultivate every power of the being. It is only by the right use of the talents that the character can develop harmoniously. Thus we bring to the foundation that which is represented in the Word as gold, silver, precious stones--material that will stand the test of God's purifying fires. {SD 155.5} Holiness is... an entire surrender of the will to God; it is living by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God; it is doing the will of our heavenly Father; it is trusting God in trial, in darkness as well as in light; it is walking by faith and not by sight; it is relying on God with unquestioning confidence, and resting in His love. {SD 155.6}} Next Week: We will continue with part 6 of our lesson entitle, The Light of Life of our book Desire of Ages Closing Prayer request one of the little ones or mommies or daddies to give prayer.
